Pittman's Chapel: A Traditional Church Becomes a Modern Home
|
|
Then:
Trinity A.M.E Zion Church, 1905 designed by William Sidney Pittman
|
|
Now:
Pittman's Chapel, National Award of Merit Winner for the Best Adaptive Reuse
|
|
Whether it's because a church congregation has moved on or they've outgrown the church, there has been a movement to
transform churches
into new-modern homes. From The Netherlands, to Australia to Washington, DC, churches from as far back as the 19th century have been renovated into architectural marvels.
The Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church was designed by architect William Sidney Pittman in 1905. He was the nation's first African-American architect to have his own office, and this church was his first commission. Pittman went on to design other buildings in DC, including the Garfield Elementary Public School (1909) and the 12
th
Street YMCA Building (1912).
In 2014, the church and adjacent land was acquired and redeveloped. The church was integrated with new construction, resulting in an enclave of homes unlike any other in DC. The Morton Street Mews project, which includes Pittman's Chapel, was a National Award of Merit Winner for the Best Adaptive Reuse in DC. The most impressive front-facing portion of Pitman’s Chapel with leaded glass windows, two turrets, and a grand staircase is now Kara’s new home!

This winter Kara escaped the cold with an island getaway to Curaçao.
Curaçao, part of the ABC islands lies on the continental shelf of South America and outside of the hurricane belt. Curaçao isn’t world famous for its beaches, likely because most of them are hidden serene gems, along the sheltered and calm southwestern coast. The real appeal of Curaçao is not simply the sandy beaches or the panoramic views; it is the coming together of everything that makes up the Island like a burst of warm energy. Curaçao waters are pristine, warm and enthralling. From Sint Christoffelberg’s highest point of 372 m (1,220 ft) to the bustling beach bars of Mambo Boulevard and Jan Thiel Beach Curaçao has something for everyone. With such a successful tourism industry, the island brings people from all around the world to take part the abundance of unique activities and to experience a taste of the Caribbean lifestyle.

|
Even while on vacation, Kara couldn't help but explore real estate in
Curaçao. She connected with a friend in the industry,
Vincent Stens
.
Vincent shared with Kara,
Boca Gentil Hilltop
, de
signed by Famous Dutch architect Cees den Heije. This 3-bedroom, 2-bath has an open design that is Caribbean, contemporary and functional.
If this winter chill has you thinking of warmer places, c
onsider Curaçao!
