MYTH:
I need a referral to see a Physical Therapist.
FACT:
In the state of New York, under "Direct Access" laws, you can work with a Physical Therapist for 10 visits or 30 days (whichever comes first) without a prescription from your doctor! If you need to continue PT beyond that time frame, we can help you get the appropriate script from your physician.
MYTH:
Physical Therapy is painful.
FACT
:
When going through physical therapy, some discomfort may occur due to tissues healing and getting stronger...but this process should never be painful. We are constantly communicating with our patients to ensure that the level of discomfort never exceeds expectations.
MYTH:
Physical Therapy is only for injuries and surgeries.
FACT:
As Physical Therapists, we work with people with many different types of goals. While most patients are rehabilitating from an injury or a surgery, many are attending PT with the goal of improving their strength, balance, and ability to walk...and even enhancing athletic performance!
MYTH:
Surgery is the only way to "fix" my problem.
FACT:
While surgery may be necessary to correct an issue in certain cases, it's rarely the first or only option. This is because skilled physical therapy has been shown to be effective in helping injuries heal naturally, without the risks or costs involved with surgery.
MYTH:
I can do Physical Therapy by myself.
FACT:
While the internet is an incredible resource, we would recommend caution when researching appropriate exercises or techniques to help address your particular pain or condition. Not all exercises are safe for every individual or every diagnosis...and some may even worsen your symptoms! Physical Therapists are highly-educated professionals who are trained to help you heal safely and effectively. Leave it to us!
