A glimpse of a summer like no other at Tyndale St-Georges

Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre.

What a summer! Protocols, sanitary measures, face masks, social distancing... Although the staff and the participants had to adapt to new ways of functioning, that did not stop anyone from having a great time! We made the best out of what we had and the children who participated in our day camp were happy to have a place to go to everyday. This summer, in order to accommodate as many families as possible while maintaining social distancing, the Children, Youth and Families Department organized smaller groups on a weekly rotation. This allowed for all families who registered their child/children to the camp to benefit from at least one week in the program. The children got to socialize, play sports, bake, make crafts, and participate in a reading challenge.

Meet Mya and Kayla. They have been coming to Tyndale for a long time! Mya started at Tyndale when she was only 1 year old. Her mother would take her to the parent-toddler activities offered in the Early Childhood Department. Kayla joined the After-School Program at age 6 and is now volunteering in the very program she once took part in! Today, they are 14 and 12 years old and are still involved in Tyndale St-Georges. This summer, they took their Counsellor in Training (CIT) certification to assist the summer camp counsellors. We were so happy to see the great work they did with the children and look forward to having them as counsellors in the next few years.

A full house for the Parent & Child Playgroup summer edition
|
Covid-19 did not stop the Early Childhood Team from organizing yet another successful mini summer camp for our neighbourhood families! Each summer, the Department offers a variety of activities and outings for families with children ages 1 to 5. This summer was no exception, well except for…
Regardless of the major accommodation our Early Childhood Educators Jila and Isabel had to face, they pulled through and hosted 4 groups on a weekly basis at the Oscar Peterson Park. Each parent and child was able to participate in two sessions a week. Activities included sing along, story time, and play time.

Story Time in the Park
From June 29 to August 14, Leandra our librarian was spotted at three different parks three times a week to offer the best gift one can offer children, the joy of reading! You could find her set up on her red checkered blanket, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with a book in her hand and a smile under her mask!

Outdoor Library
This summer we brought the Tyndale St-Georges Children’s Library outdoors. Every day, between 3 PM and 5 PM, Little Burgundy families were invited to stop by the Jessie-Maxwell Park for board games, reading, crafts, and foosball tournaments. Stay tuned for more information about outdoor library activities starting this September. In the meantime, we invite you to download audio books from our website https://www.tyndalestgeorges.com/audio-library.html

Adult Development Department and Pre-Employability
Program registrations
|
|
With Covid-19’s unexpected arrival, we were unable to open our doors to the public this summer at the Adult Centre. The team at the Adult Development Department has been working tirelessly to come up with a reopening plan and organize the space to welcome the next group of participants. If you are 18+ and looking to join the workforce or go back to work after time away, the Pre-Employability Program (PPE) is for you! Starting September 8th, this 6 month long program offers training and skills, as well as a variety of workshops and activities to get you set up for the next step in your life.
For more information on PPE visit our website. To register or to speak to someone from the department, please call 514-989-2155.

‘Nutrition for Neighbours’, a Youth Cooperative initiative
|
|
|
Pandemic or no pandemic, the Youth co-op delivered! That’s right, they delivered $5000 worth of groceries to 20 families living in low incoming housing in the Little Burgundy neighbourhood. The ‘Nutrition for Neighbours’ project aims to respond to the issue of food insecurity in the Little Burgundy Community. Furthermore, it allows the participants, ages 12 to 17, the opportunity to give back to their community and have positive interactions with their neighbours, all the while learning how to budget, plan, and shop for the families living in Social Housing. For more information on the Youth Co-op Program and the ‘Nutrition for Neighbours’ project, please visit our website.
This summer, the Youth Co-op ran from June 29 to August 7, under the sanitary measures and social distancing guidelines issued by public health authorities and the Quebec Government.

Congratulations to the Anne Fish Scholarship recipients
|
|
Each year, The Tyndale St-Georges Foundation offers scholarships through the Anne Johnson Fish Memorial Fund to residents of Little Burgundy who are students enrolled in full-time educational programs in secondary or post-secondary schools. Although first priority is given to students who are participants in or have graduated from the Tyndale St-Georges High School Perseverance Program or After-School Program, all Little Burgundy students are welcome to apply. The call for applications to the Anne Fish Scholarship is announced each spring at the end of the school year. If you are a student or know one that would be interested in applying, please let them know to keep an eye out on our Facebook page in May 2021.

Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre focuses on creating opportunities that empower residents to confront and move through life’s challenges by providing new tools and resources and a supportive network. Life-long learning has been central to our mission, which is why we offer early childhood programs for tots and parents, after school programs for children, high school perseverance programs for teens, life-skills training for adults and a seniors program to help our elders stay connected and engaged . Our aim is to ensure that each member of our community has the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills to flourish and thrive, and realize their potential. Tyndale St. Georges Community Centre is at the heart of Little Burgundy, and we believe our programs build a strong, diverse, healthy and empowered community.
