Answers to Challenges from Uniformitarians 2
Last month we began addressing the challenges we have received from our uniformitarian friends. This month we will continue with the list of challenges starting from the uniformitarians starting with the famous zircon diffusion problem compared to the long ages of Uranium decay. Can fluctuating temperature be the answer? some lines of evidence suggest a period of accelerated isotope decay.
and continuing with C-14 that is consistently found in dinosaur bones and many other fossils as well. and indeed in rocks that conventional geologists class as hundreds of millions of years old. The dating labs seem to conclude that their standard preprocessing, which is intended to remove any surface contamination, is actually introducing contamination in the supposedly old rocks! Why don’t they do the science and engineering it takes to eliminate the contamination they think they are introducing? Then we could all see the evidence in detail as it truly is.
Further down the line we will consider the claims about unquestioned agreement between varves, tree rings and C-14. And many other claims by the uniformitarians. We will also look at subducting slabs that still have not absorbed enough heat to indicate long ages.
Now, I want to discuss the biggest question of all – what is the difference between atheist, uniformitarians, creationists, or catastrophist?
Uniformitarians think everything in the past can be explained by the geological and evolutionary processes we observe operating today. That means that nearly everything about geology and the development of life is slow and gradual. Exceptions like earthquakes are rare. This thinking includes atheists, many creationist and all of mainstream science. These all reject any thought of large scale intervention by the supernatural power of God.
There are two groups of Christian creationists that are also uniformitarians. The first are inclined to think God created everything in the beginning in a very finely tuned initial condition so that everything in astronomy, geology, and evolution would flow out of the Big Bang and following natural processes with little further action by God. They would suppose therefore that that God’s actions since would have primarily a spiritual purpose and effect. The Bio Logos organization would fit within this group.
A second creationist groups would be much the same but would recognize that more physical intervention by God was required, especially in the development of life and in the environment the great variety of life and humanity would need. The Reasons to Believe organization would fit within this group.
Both of these two uniformitarian creationist groups are referred to as “Old Earth Creationist” abbreviated OEC or simply OE.
A third group of creationists think that the Genesis Creation and Genesis Flood narratives in the Bible describe major supernatural acts of God during these events. These events are at times so far out of the ordinary that it is appropriate to describe them as catastrophic. However, the period between the Creation and the Flood and the period between the Flood and the present may be nearly uniform. The total time since the Creation events is something more than six thousand years but anything beyond twenty thousand seems like and extreme stretch. This group is commonly called “Young Earth Creationist” abbreviated YEC or YE.
It might be said that the goal of YEC is to understand all of the Biblical events, especially the Flood, in terms of science and the narrative of Genesis. This is a high bar we have set for ourselves but in the last sixty years very great progress ha been achieved. So, with continued diligent effort much more progress is expected. Current work is approaching a very substantial explanation of how the Genesis Flood generate most of the fossil bearing rock layers nearly up to the top rock layers. This explanation is called Catastrophic Plate Tectonics (CPT).
Over the last sixty years, six national scale YEC organization have grown up with a staff of PhD scientists in their leadership. These organizations include:
CPT seems to have a sound foundation in science and sound evidence in the world’s observed geology so many think it is on the right track. However, it must be recognized that so much physical work is accomplished during a worldwide catastrophic event that a significant fraction of that energy will be converted to heat. That much heat is presently quite problematic. Are we overlooking something, or will some new physical effects be discovered, or did God intervene in I some way? At this point we do not know. However, there are several lines of evidence that indicate that indicate that something like CPT did occur in association with the Genesis Flood. As we at the GHCA go on answering the challenges from our uniformitarian friends we will also examine various facets of CPT, its foundations in science and the lines of evidence that indicates that it did in fact happen.

Please join us On Oct. 7 at 7 pm for a great adventure of learning. We will be meeting in Houston’s First Baptist’s Reception Room. Park in the Senior Parking on the north side of the building and come in the reception Room door that opens onto the Senior Parking lot. There are rest rooms available at the back of our meeting room! You can’t get more convenient that that. All are welcome, we will invite questions at points along the way.

Examples of Important YEC Scientific Evidences
Some major examples of physical evidence we point to include:
- Remains of original soft tissue still found in dinosaur bones. Along with that tissue is C-14 that would decay completely away in less than a hundred thousand years, a tiny fraction of the dinosaur fossil's supposed age.
- For many years geologists have found C-14 in fossil carbon throughout the fossil record. So, the entire fossil record is less than 100,000 years old.
- The origin of the information and molecular machinery in the first living self-reproducing cell remains a complete enigma for biologist and biochemists.
- In the origin of the universe, big bang theory is being recognized as a dead end by increasing numbers of secular scientists. The hypothesized inflation has nothing to start it, drive it forward, or stop it. Without inflation fatal flaws appear with the absence of predicted antimatter, magnetic monopoles, or any means for the whole universe to come to the same precise background temperature. Then the formation of the first stars is as enigmatic as the origin of the first biological cell. Dark matter and dark energy are as enigmatic as the galactic motions they are needed to explain.
At the root of all standard science are many assumptions that may be quite incorrect. At the top is that there is no God. Another is that present process can be used to explain everything in the past. When we look at a canyon we are taught to assume the river at the bottom cut the canyon. But perhaps tectonic events made the canyon and there is a river at the bottom because water always flows downhill. At the root of big bang theory is a pure assumption that has been named the "Cosmological Principle". Perhaps inaccuracies there are responsible for the big bang's multitude of problems.
There is more about the role of assumptions in science found on our website here. There are many more resources on young earth and young universe evidences here.
