Since that day in the spring of 1996, I have been on a never ending journey. My journey includes millions of people just like me that are Hispanic or Latino but happen to be the descendants of secret Jews of Spain. Our forefathers endured a very bloody history as well as an expulsion out of the very land our own ancestors founded during the times of King David and King Solomon."

Anusim DNA: Facts and Fallacies
Israel's popular newspaper, Haaretz, recently revealed a very interesting article on Jewish DNA. They say that in his book, "Legacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People, Harry Ostrer, a medical geneticist and professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, claims that Jews are different, and the differences are not just skin deep." He says that "Jews exhibit... a distinctive genetic signature. Considering that the Nazis tried to exterminate Jews based on their supposed racial distinctiveness, such a conclusion might be a cause for concern. But Ostrer sees it as central to Jewish identity."

If this is so, I ask what about the Jews in Spain and Portugal during the prolonged holocausts of the Inquisitions during the Middle Ages-those who were racially raped and forced to convert to a Catholic belief. For survival, many of them fled to the Americas and hid the secret of their true identity so well, and for so long that we forgot what the secret was.

In all this increased knowledge, DNA science cannot declare who's Jewish. But why is Jewishness a distinct race? The operative word here is "race."

Race doesn't determine your religion. While many Jews practice Judaism around the world, most Jews of this same race do not. While most Jews proclaim themselves to be Jews, most often they do so by religious affiliation, not racial identification. Some DNA test participants may not adhere to Judaism but their parents or grandparents did. Therefore, they consider themselves to be Jews by birth and not by faith. This is the case with many Christians as well.

I've discovered that the 500-plus years of living an underground lifestyle, that almost all Children of the Inquisitions have no inkling of their ancestral Jewish roots. In fact, most are of some Christian strand or another.

So I end this episode on Anusim's DNA by saying that science and we, the Children of the Inquisitions, have yet a lot to learn about our race and about our faith. I positively predict that in the next five years, we'll know much more about who's a real Jew and we'll be surprised.
