Grill safely this summer
Outdoor grilling and barbecues are a great way to create memories with family and friends. However, the safe use and operation of open-flame devices are just as essential to having a good time. One of the leading causes of apartment and townhome fires involves the misuse of outdoor grills. The following fire safety regulations will help you enjoy this outdoor activity:
- Don’t use grills and barbecues indoors or on apartment balconies
- Grills and barbecues should be on ground level and at least 10 feet away from buildings
- Coals should completely cool and dry before disposing of them
- Grills and barbecues must always be attended
- Keep children and pets at least 5 feet away from any cooking area

Stay safe around pools
Accidental drownings are tragic reminders of how quickly life can be taken away. Although 90 percent of parents say they supervise their children while they are swimming, these adults are sometimes distracted by other activities. Here are some helpful tips to keep your kids safe in or around pools:
- Stay alert even with a lifeguard on duty
- Install secure barriers around home pools
- Ensure children wear a fitted life jacket whenever they are around water
-
Take swim lessons with Gwinnett Parks to practice safe swimming
- Designate a Water Watcher, a responsible adult who watches kids in the water without distractions

Dispose of fat, oils, and grease properly
By being mindful of fat, oils, and grease disposal, we can help protect our sewer system and the environment. When rinsed down the drain, FOG solidifies, leading to blockages and potential damage. Save money and the environment with these helpful disposal tips:
- Scrape food scraps into the trash
- Wipe excess FOG off dinnerware and cookware before washing
- Use sink strainers to keep food scraps out of the drain
- Pour used FOG in a container with a lid and place it in the trash
Visit UnclogTheFog.com to learn more about proper FOG disposal.

Recycle responsibly this Earth Day
Join the global community to celebrate Earth Day! Bring your hard-to-recycle items to Gwinnett's annual Earth Day recycling event on Saturday, April 26 at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. From 9:00am to noon, residents can drop off items that are typically more difficult to recycle, like electronics, latex and oil-based paints, tires, paper, and clothing.
