Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!

I look forward to a great year of teaching and learning as we embark on a journey like no other year. Teachers started this journey last week in preparing the LaunchEd classrooms to welcome the students this week. The students started this week and as we continue to grow more will utilize all the available resources to succeed. We appreciate the patience of the students, parents and teachers as we work through the new programs along with some of the old. We will persevere and have a great year of teaching and learning.

Maya Angelou, Poet
One of my strange hobbies is to scroll through quotes to find inspiration. I recently read a quote by Maya Angelou, "I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it." As I read this, I think of our school year. What is happening is changing the way we will provide quality instruction for our students but we refuse to let it reduce the quality in which we accomplish this goal. It has changed the way we will connect with our students, but we refuse to allow it to reduce the bond that comes with those connections. The connections will be strong and will be the reason we are able to reach new heights in the new platforms!

We look forward to a great year and remember #DarterConnections will remain strong!

Lyle F. Heinz

Principal
Apopka High School

Dates to Watch For

Staff Spotlight: Welcome Mr. Barrios!
Roger Barrios, Engineering
Mr. Barrios is joining the Engineering Magnet team from another school in our district. He is teaching Introduction to Engineering Design and Engineering Design and Development. We are excited to welcome him to Apopka High School and we look forward to what he will bring to this amazing program!
"It is a great pleasure to be here. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues and doing great things with my students."
Mr. Barrios receives a science grant from Duke Energy for his work on electric cars while at Lockhart Middle School.
Mr. Barrios on the track with one of his middle school science students seated in one of several electric cars they built earlier this year. The electric cars were designed to operate on lithium batteries as part of a project to test low power consumption and aerodynamics.

Schedule Change Requests
Students may request a schedule change during the drop/add period from August 13-16. Students will complete a Google form during this time period which can be accessed through the school website: www.apopkahs.ocps.net or by logging into their school Google account and submitting this form: www.tinyurl.com/2020AHSrequest

We will do our best to honor the requests made. However, we may not be able to honor all requested changes as we need to adhere to class size limitations and consider a myriad of factors while balancing the needs of our overall student population. Requests cannot be honored for a different lunch shift/location, a different class period, and a different teacher. Once schedule changes occur, there will be a lag between Skyward and Canvas availability for the new class(es).

Course Leveling
As scheduling errors and change requests are addressed, we are also working to level core courses to meet the state required maximum class size law, pursuant to Florida Statute 1003.03. We strive to keep schedule, teacher, and lunch changes to a minimum to the fullest extent possible. Once schedule changes occur, there will be a lag between Skyward and Canvas availability for the new class(es).
