Apopka Memorial Middle School Community Brief
Monday, February 27, 2023
AMMS Community Member,

We are inching ever closer to the end of the third marking period, so please check Skyward regularly for grades and attendance.

Friday, March 10th was originally scheduled as a student holiday and teacher workday, but this will now be our last day of quarter 3 as it is a hurricane makeup day. This gives us ten school days to get everything wrapped up for the grading term.

While we still have two days remaining in our Black History Month celebration calendar (please see below) I can share that everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves and the experience has been educational. Thank you so much to all students, staff, and families that actively participated this year.

Please remember that this Wednesday, March 1 will be a regular length school day—No early release. This applies to all schools across the district.

Thank you for reading and looking over some of our highlights from this past week.

Mrs. Lisa James
Principal
Apopka Memorial Middle School

Pictured very top and just below: Thank you to everyone that turned out for Community Cleanup Day this past Saturday. We greatly appreciated everyone's hard work and time. Thank you also to School Board Member Melissa Byrd, Apopka City Commissioner Alexander Smith, and Apopka City Commissioner Nick Nesta for their commitment and involvement. As you can see from the photos, we made some real progress with campus beautification and all seemed to have enjoyed the fellowship!

Monday's Motivational Moment!
Thursday, March 2 is Read Across America Day
Dr. Seuss's Birthday is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2 — Dr. Seuss's birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books. This week we spotlight Dr. Seuss, an old friend to many of our Seahawks!

Green Eggs and Ham, Anyone?
Theodor Seuss Geisel — Dr. Seuss of children's book fame — is loved by many readers for his storytelling. Today, no children's author/illustrator's work is more immediately recognizable worldwide than that of Dr. Seuss. His most popular book, "Green Eggs and Ham," has sold 8 million copies since 1960.

While most of our Apopka families have heard of Dr. Seuss, many probably do not know that he struggled with success early on. In fact, his first children's book, "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street," was rejected 27 times before its publication in 1937 by Vanguard Press. It actually took many years for Theodor Seuss Geisel to reach fame, but he was fiercely persistent. He never quit on his goals.

One of Geisel's writing tricks was that his books were deceptively simple. His "Green Eggs and Ham" contains only 50 words, a challenge thrown to the author by his editor at the time.
Dr. Seuss' lessons for our Seahawks:
  1. Success comes through gritty perseverance. You must never give up.
  2. Practice self-discipline at all times.
  3. Whatever you are doing, have fun with it. Channel all thoughts about school or your work as something you "get to do" vs. something you "have to do."
  4. Be humble and whenever possible, share the credit.
