Apopka Memorial Middle School Community Brief
Monday, April 10, 2023
AMMS Community Member,

We are now well into April and heading into the final seven weeks of the school year. For those families with high school seniors, the time is even less at about five weeks. If you still have not been able to attend one of our monthly SAC or PTSA meetings, we do have one of each this Monday, April 10 (please see details below). All members of our Apopka school community are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Thank you for reading about some of our latest AMMS happenings and best wishes for a successful week ahead.

Month of April Themes
Student Spotlight
Apopka's FFA Chapter scores high in Ornamental Horticulture
Our FFA students were outstanding on Friday, March 24. Their Ornamental Horticulture Demonstration projects looked great!*

  • Apopka received two 3rd places and one 2nd place.
  • Allison Wells and Ava Moss earned 3rd place for “Artistic Arrangement”
  • Brianna Pilch and Julianne Hernandez also took 3rd for “Landscaping”
  • Jonathan Small earned 2nd place for “Consumer Use”

* These career development events are designed to stimulate careful planning, knowledge and the ability to explain the “how and why” of horticultural practices. Each student (or team of 2) had to create a 7-10 minute presentation on one of the following areas of the horticulture industry: artistic arrangement, consumer use, landscaping, marketing and production. The presentation included supporting evidence, data, trial, sample, photos, etc. for the “how to” and “why”.

Monday's Motivational Moment!
A CALL TO ARMS

During World War II, the allied forces called every available man to be ready to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. A unit consisting of clerks and office workers was hastily converted to infantry and assigned to a section of the road that was expected to be under fire within hours.

The men were ordered to dig foxholes from which to fight. One man, who had spent years at a typewriter, tried his best but made little progress in the stone-hard ground. Finally, he approached his lieutenant and said, "Sir wouldn't it be easier if we just attacked and made them dig the foxholes?"

The lesson from this short story comes best from this inspirational quote made by top selling author M. Scott Peck ("The Road Less Traveled"):

Until you value yourself,
you won't value your time. Until you value your time,
you will not do anything with it.
~ M. Scott Peck, author
