Apopka Memorial Middle School Community Brief
Tuesday, March 12, 2024
|
|
AMMS Community Member,
We are in the home stretch of quarter 3 with only two more days of instruction. Friday, March 15th is a non-student day and marks the start of spring break. Teachers are finalizing grades and it is critically important that students are on time and in attendance at school each day.
Parents, I realize I have written this point before and it continues to be the critical component in student success as we look ahead to the final nine weeks of 2023-2024. Your children need you to partner with us in holding them accountable. Please log in to Skyward regularly to monitor grades and attendance throughout the 4th quarter. Support and encourage them to make good decisions and build strong habits. The time we have in middle school will be over before you know it and we want to see our Seahawks prepared for success in high school and beyond.

THE POWER OF MATHEMATICAL THINKING
In this week's issue, we spotlighted Mrs. Olds-Mitchell's math students as they were learning the relationships between triangles. As has been the case for hundreds of years, some students are going to ask the question many math teachers already know is coming:
"When am I going to use this?"
Here is something for our Apopka parents to ponder if this should ever come up at home...
You may not be aiming for a career some day that is mathematically oriented. That's fine—most people aren't. But you will still be doing all kinds of math and are probably already doing it now, even if you don't call it that. Math is woven into the way we think, into the way we reason. And math makes you better at things. Knowing mathematics is like wearing a pair of X-ray specs that reveal hidden structures underneath the messy and chaotic surface of the world. Math is also a science about not being wrong about things, its techniques and habits hammered out by centuries of hard work and argument. With the tools of mathematics in hand, you can understand the world in a deeper, sounder, and more meaningful way.
