Richard Johnson Environmental Education Award Update
|
After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Richard A. Johnson Environmental Education Award is back! In summer 2022, Francis "Champ" Zumbrun will become the most recent recipient of the award, which has been presented in memory of Dr. Richard Johnson to more than twenty (20) environmental science educators in western Maryland since 1991.

Emily Cohen Awarded NSF CAREER Award to Study Migrating Birds as Communities
|
Appalachian Laboratory Assistant Professor Emily Cohen has received a Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation to lead a five-year research program to help understand the processes that influence the formation of bird communities during spring and fall migration.

Researchers Release First-Of-Its-Kind Quantitative Assessment for Sustainable Agriculture
|
Dr. Xin Zhang, Appalachian Laboratory Associate Professor, and her colleagues from universities and international non-governmental organizations have created a quantitative assessment tool for sustainable agriculture to assist policymakers in evaluating progress, establishing priorities and informing policy actions.

Piasecki Wins Staff Award
|
John Piasecki, Appalachian Laboratory Facilities Manager, was selected as the 2021 recipient of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Staff Excellence Award. The annual award, presented in the fall at the University's annual Staff Appreciation Day, recognizes those staff members who consistently demonstrate a high level of commitment and dedication to UMCES.

Nelson Chosen for Leadership Maryland Class Of 2022
|
David Nelson, Appalachian Laboratory Professor and Director, is one of 52 individuals chosen for Leadership Maryland’s 29th class. Nelson will complete the eight-month, hands-on professional development program, which focuses on the state’s most vital issues, from April to December 2022.
