Appealing to the Next Generation

This September, NJSOP welcomed more than 40 recent graduates, including optometry residents, into our professional community. They come to NJSOP from New England College of Optometry, Illinois College of Optometry, Pennsylvania College of Optometry/Salus at Drexel University, NOVA Southeastern University, College of Optometry NSU Florida, Inter. American University of Puerto Rico, School of Optometry, State University of New York College of Optometry, MCPHS University School of Optometry, and Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry. We can learn so much from them, and them from us!

In today’s fast-paced world, young professionals often expect immediate results and rapid advancements. To stay relevant, the NJSOP aims to stay forward-thinking and future-proof, ensuring that our membership and leadership pipeline remain robust.

Below are ways we can all welcome and embrace the new generation of members.

  1. Encourage engagement. NJSOP invites all members to our committee meetings. Engagement can mean simply showing up and listening at first. A diverse group of members at our committee meetings builds new member confidence and trust, while also teaching leadership and decision-making skills. Seasoned members gain fresh perspectives, boosting the collective morale and strengthening our membership and leadership pipelines.
  2. Evaluate NJSOP content regularly. This means we need your candid input. Our diverse membership consumes content in various ways, including accessing content digitally and on-demand, anytime and anywhere that suits them. In this post-COVID world, there is an amazing opportunity for us to reinvent what it means to be a member and create new ways for young professionals to engage with the organization. Thank you to our members who shared their input into the recent NJSOP Communications survey. Congratulations survey participant, Dr. Lindsey Boody, for winning the Home Depot gift card!
  3. Join the networking culture. Members benefit greatly from connecting with individuals across various career stages, work settings, disciplines, and experiences, not just their peers. Young professionals are eager to explore new career opportunities and expand their expertise. By facilitating their networking and serving as a central hub, we can significantly support career development and become essential resources to each other. Please introduce yourself and share your professional journey. You never know who you might impact!
  4. Provide continuity throughout career stages. The NJSOP hopes to maintain interest in active membership throughout all career stages. We will continue to push for the modernization of the profession to make our state a desirable professional home. If members find value, they will continue to stay with us and bridge the gap to their next career stage. Share what is important to you HERE by October 21, 2024, to be eligible for a $25 Starbucks e-gift card.
