New Service Corps Year about to Begin: Your Help Wanted Now!

Catholic Charities RIS,

South Boston

Pernet Family Health, Worcester

East Boston Social Centers

IVC New England's 16th year is about ready to begin. Our annual Orientation/Day of Reflection will take place at St. Ignatius Parish in Chestnut Hill, on Friday, September 6. Returning and new members will come together to listen, learn, pray, and make ready for a year of service and reflection as Ignatian Volunteers.

At approximately 35 nonprofit agencies in central and eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, IVC New England service corps members are committed to teach and tutor young children and adults, use grant writing, legal, HR, and marketing skills, deliver food and furniture to families and seniors, or do direct service with new immigrants and women and men experiencing homelessness.

But openings still remain with several nonprofit partners! If you or someone you know has been considering a year of service with IVC, contact our office now! Your help is needed. You will never regret your gift of time and talent. Click here for the moving story of one of our current IVC members, and to learn more about IVC.

Among our available opportunities are: work with immigrants and refugees at Catholic Charities (Boston), Catholic Social Services (Providence), and East Boston Social Centers; education and after-school positions with Nurtury Early Education, Sister Mary Hart Children's Program, and Friends of Rafael Hernandez (all in Boston), and a reception/greeter position at Nativity School Worcester; and administrative, marketing, advocacy, legal, and advancement positions in a variety of locations, including Haley House and Irish Pastoral Centre in Boston, Saint Rock Haiti Foundation in Milton (MA), and Matthew 25 in Worcester.

A current listing of all are openings can be found by clicking here, or, stay up to date on changes by contacting the IVC New England office or going directly to our website. Contact our office for more information or an application.

IVC New England service corps members supplement and support their service with spiritual reflection. Each volunteer has the opportunity to meet with a personal reflector, and to join with other corps members in monthly, reflective meetings, as part of a community engaged in service.

Friends, Family and IVC Mourn the Loss of Peter Gyves, SJ

IVC New England joins friends, family, and those many people inspired by his work, to mourn the sudden loss of Jesuit Father Peter Gyves, SJ.

Peter Gyves was a pediatrician, a physician who served in some of the poorest communities of El Salvador during a period of systematic and violent oppression in the 1980s. He entered the Jesuits in 2003 and was ordained a priest in 2008.

In 2015, he founded A Faith That Does Justice (AFTDJ), an interfaith organization that raises consciousness about social issues, uniting people of different faiths and economic realities in understanding and doing something about inequality, poverty, marginalization, and injustice in our communities and world. IVC New England has partnered with AFTDJ since its foundation.

A concelebrated funeral Mass was held at St. Cecelia parish on August 14 where he regularly presided at liturgy. Those who wish to remember him and his work are encouraged to donate to A Faith That Does Justice (tabs below are for donations and Facebook pages of IVC New England).
