We are excited to announce that registration is now open for the Training Institute's new 3-Day MASTER'S Course on Strangulation Prevention.
 
About the Course
 
THE MASTER'S COURSE  IS FOR ALUMNUS OF THE 4-DAY ADVANCED COURSE   handling domestic violence and sexual assault cases. This course will bring together 50 prior attendees who have distinguished themselves in the handling of non-fatal strangulation cases, by testifying as experts, providing training and/or by making significant contributions to the field.  The Master's Course will be a very special and unique opportunity to participate in a national think tank and learning exchange. This new course will update attendees about our current knowledge of non-fatal strangulation and suffocation assaults by continuing where the 4-Day Advanced Course left off.  

During our three days together, attendees will learn about:  
  • New laws, case law and medical research
  • New and improved tools for assessing risk
  • Updates on Imaging Recommendations
  • Updates from the National Advisory Board
  • Participate in breakout sessions involving case studies in child, elder and sexual assault strangulation assaults
  • Rebutting the testimony from defense experts
  • The growing and evolving multidisciplinary team in strangulation cases
  • Lessons learned from staged suicide scenes
  • Emerging promises practices
  • Integrating the science of hope into our work to help victims heal
  • Screening, evaluating and treating the strangled patient for traumatic brain injury
  • Prosecuting strangulation cases without the victim's testimony
  • Prosecuting strangulation cases as torture and attempted murder
  • Defense panel discussion
  • Individual and national goal setting
  • Case reviews
  • Practice sessions for experts by practicing defense attorneys
  • Holding stranglers accountable

  • Affinity rotations:
    • Advocacy: Addressing strangulation during intake
    • Investigations: Implementing new law enforcement protocols
    • Medical: Conducting a DV clinical forensic exam
    • Prosecution: Using the defense expert as your expert
The course will provide practical, hands-on training workshops where multi-disciplinary professionals can work together in small groups and learn from each other.

 It will also include critical training specific to each discipline, as well as improve practice, implementation and your expert testimony.  

First Priority Will Be Given to OVW Grantees
 

Due to limited seating, our team will be carefully evalulating each application to bring a cross-section of professionals across the United States to participate in a learning exchange with other experts, specialists and trainers.  Submitting an application does not guarantee you a spot at the training.
 
We will notify accepted attendees by July 21, 2018. If you do not hear back from us by that date, your application will automatically be added to our waiting list. Approved attendees must confirm attendance by July 31 2018. After this date, any unconfirmed seats will be made available to attendees on the waiting list. We will respond to those on waiting list as soon as possible after July 31st. 

This course consists of 3 Days of training. To receive full credit for the course, attendees must attend all 3 days, complete mandatory assignments, and sign-in daily .

The Living Forensic Evaluation of Gunshot Wounds: Application for Domestic and Officer-Involved Shootings with Dr. Bill Smock

 ABOUT THE COURSE:

Louisville Metro Police Surgeon Bill Smock, M.D., one of the country's leading law enforcement educators and expert in clinical forensic medicine, has developed an 8-hour training program to assist forensic nurses, law enforcement officers and prosecutors in the forensic evaluation of gunshot wounds.

The program is specifically designed for law enforcement officers and medical personnel involved with the investigation, evaluation and reconstruction of firearms-related incidents, including domestic and officer-involved shootings. The information presented will assist your investigation and ensure that your conclusions and findings are based upon the most up-to-date medical science and forensic evidence.  
 


 8-hour Program will include:

  • How to correctly determine entrance versus exit wounds
  • Review of current medical literature on the accuracy of un-trained physicians at differentiating entrance from exit wounds
  • How to accurately determine the range-of-fire
  • How to determine the direction of bullet movement in graze wounds
  • Appropriate evidence recognition, collection and preservation
  • What tests should you ask your crime lab to perform
  • How to determine the wound track
  • Forensic photography techniques
  • The investigation of officer-involved shootings: can you account for each round and wound?
  • Case studies: domestic and officer-involved shooting
  • Use and misuse of forensic terminology
  • Interviewing techniques: what questions will determine the truth behind what happened?
  • Recognition of staged shooting scenes
  • Wound ballistics and wounding: handgun versus rifle 
  • Hands-on examination of spent bullets and cartridge cases
  • Radiographic identification of bullets
  • Is the history consistent with the physical evidence? How do you know?
MASTER'S COURSE ACCREDITATION:

MCLE Credits (for California):*
Approximately 25 Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits are offered with this training, included in the price of registration. Alliance for HOPE International is a California approved provider of MCLE credits for attorneys (Provider #15493). Professionals in states outside of California should check with their own state bar to determine whether these credits are approved in their jurisdiction.

Alliance for HOPE International is partnered with the Relationship Training Institute (RTI) to offer 25 Continuing Education (CE) credits with this training for the price of $25. RTI is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. RTI maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
