TREY

We are super excited to share an amazing independent living update on Trey, one of our past Dave’s Place participants! Congrats, Trey!

“Initially, Trey was reluctant to go to Dave’s Place. But by the end of it, something had shifted. His speech had improved, his confidence was visibly higher, and he’d even learned to cook and try new foods. He was proud of himself!

That weekend also changed how we, as his parents, understood what he was capable of. We had underestimated the value of his achieving things on his own.

Today, Trey lives in a supported living apartment with a roommate and needs very little support. He grocery shops and regularly visits Subway and Sweet Frog, all independently.

In her August Note, our inspiring Program Director, Gaby Osborne Brooks, shares all about our brand new Quest Community Living Camp and its successful kick-off last month:

“Quest was never meant to be just another camp. It was designed to bridge the gap between learning life skills and confidently applying them in everyday situations. By extending the experience to five days, participants had the opportunity to establish routines, adapt to new situations, and take on new responsibilities that encouraged growth and greater independence. They learned to solve problems together, support one another, and make more decisions on their own while knowing their teachers were there to guide and encourage them when needed…”

Our 2027 Dave’s Place and Quest Camp application is now open! Be sure to apply early to our one-of-a-kind, transformative independent living experiences! We've already received many applications since August 1st and expect many more!

We’re excited to introduce another one of our experienced, compassionate and supportive teachers! Jennie has been teaching at Dave’s Place and was a vital member of our very first Quest Camp team last month!

MEET JENNIE

Jennie Raugh is thrilled to be part of the Dash and Scout team, helping people with intellectual disabilities learn and achieve a greater sense of independence.

She is also currently the Director of Programming at Nest Academy RVA and has over 35 years of experience working and serving in the disability community. With a background that includes serving in various roles, including Program Director at Camp Baker, working in Chesterfield County Schools, co-teaching a music class through Commonwealth Music Therapy, and various volunteer roles, she has developed a deep passion for supporting individuals with disabilities.

Jennie lives in Bon Air with her husband and dogs. She has 3 adult children, enjoys cooking, and has a love for animals.
