Apply to Serve on a 2025 Law Society of Alberta Committee

The Law Society is now accepting applications from active, practising Alberta lawyers in good standing who are interested in volunteering on a committee. Diverse perspectives play an important role in helping us achieve our mission of serving the public interest by ensuring a high standard of legal services and professional conduct.

Committee appointments will be approved at the February 2025 Bencher meeting. Committee members are appointed for a three-year term.

The deadline for applications is noon MT on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024. Please note, it is the sole responsibility of the applicants to ensure their applications are complete in accordance with the requirements below. Incomplete, late or applications with CVs that do not meet the specified requirements set out below will not be reviewed.

There are 13 anticipated committee vacancies:

  • Audit and Finance (two vacancies): The Audit and Finance Committee has approximately seven, two-hour meetings per year.
  • Conduct (five vacancies): The Conduct Committee meets in panels consisting of three participants once a month, typically on a Tuesday. The panel composition is based on availability of Committee members. All meetings are scheduled for two-hours; however, they may conclude sooner than the allocated time. Although seldom, there are also occasions where availability may be requested for Special Conduct Committee panels that occur outside of the regular schedule.
  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (two vacancies): The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee has four, two-hour meetings per year.
  • Lawyer Competence (two vacancies): The Lawyer Competence Committee has four, two-hour meetings per year.
  • Practice Review (two vacancies): The Practice Review Committee meets in panels of three on Wednesday mornings. There are approximately eight panel meetings each year, which typically last an hour and a half. The panel meetings are scheduled by the Tribunal Office and the panel composition is based on availability.

Current Volunteers

Lawyers currently serving on a committee who have served more than eight years will not be appointed regardless of their quality of service as an effort to offer opportunities to new volunteers. Those current volunteers who have not reached this threshold and are interested in continuing, do not apply. A separate email will be sent to you with a current volunteer application link to register your interest.

Seeking Reimbursement for an Immediate Roadside Sanction

Vehicle seizure and towing fees are eligible for reimbursement when an Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) has been cancelled by SafeRoads Alberta. If you are legal counsel representing someone who is seeking reimbursement, you must follow the below processes depending on who issued the IRS:

  • If the IRS is issued by the Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol, you must seek reimbursement by filling out the application form on the Government of Alberta website
  • If the IRS is issued by the RCMP, you must email RCMP_IRS_Reversals@rcmp-grc.gc.ca and provide the following details in the body of your email:
  • Contravention # (from your Notice of Administrative Penalty or Seizure Form)
  • Occurrence Date
  • Summary of Incident
  • Claimant Contact Information

Some Alberta lawyers are sending people to the incorrect agencies to seek reimbursement and in some cases have been sharing email addresses that are only intended for internal use by the respective law enforcement agencies, causing administrative delays. Please be reminded that reimbursement must be sought with the originating agency, which is identified on the Notice of Administrative Penalty.
