We are pleased to announce the appointment of Christopher Gilligan, MD, MBA, as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Chief Quality Officer (CQO) at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH). Dr. Gilligan will directly report to Alan Lee with a dotted line reporting to Andy Anderson, MD, Executive Vice President, Chief Medical and Quality Officer, RWJBarnabas Health. In these roles, he will promote our academic mission, partner closely with Rutgers, and help advance our medical education and research programs at RWJUH and in the health system. 

 

Dr. Gilligan is a proven leader and expert in driving clinical excellence across integrated health care systems and brings more than 15 years of distinguished leadership in academic medicine to RWJUH. His results-oriented and data-driven approach has led to operational and financial success and he is recognized for building high-performing teams. 


As CMO, Dr. Gilligan will work with the Medical Staff Executive Committee, to provide leadership to nearly 2,000 physicians and advanced practice providers at RWJUH. He will work with medical and administrative leaders to improve physician engagement and advance strategic efforts regarding operational effectiveness and patient experience. 


As CQO, Dr. Gilligan will guide clinical performance standards, emphasizing quality and safety metrics to enhance patient care outcomes. His responsibilities include integrating and coordinating clinical practices, aligning physician activities with the RWJUH strategic plan, formulating quality and safety strategies, overseeing infection control, and leading performance improvement initiatives.

  • Nicole Berner, MHSA, RN, CPCS, CPMSM, Director, Medical Administration


Prior to RWJUH, Dr. Gilligan served as Associate Chief Medical Officer at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he led their response to COVID-19 in perioperative and periprocedural areas. He also founded and directed the unified multidisciplinary Spine Service Line, achieving significant growth and leading in spine market share among New England hospitals.


Dr. Gilligan also held leadership roles at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as Chief of the Division of Pain Medicine and Co-Director of the Spine Center. He received an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Medical Doctor degree from Yale University School of Medicine, a Master in Philosophy from Cambridge University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University.



We owe Dr. Anderson a debt of gratitude for his service as the interim RWJUH CMO/CQO for the past fifteen months. His insights as our system medical and quality leader were invaluable to the team here, and his on-the-ground experience at RWJUH provided him with deeper understanding of our academic medical center. His time here embodied our one system, one family mantra and he is committed to helping Dr. Gilligan and all of us continue to rapidly advance our strategic goals.
