Cholla District Weekly Update

Dear Cholla Residents,


I hope to see many of you in 2 weeks on Thursday, May 7, 5 PM - 7:30 PM for the Cholla District Public Safety District Meeting. The deadline to register in order to help us plan for seating and food is this coming Monday, April 27.


Come and enjoy free hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks, and drinks at 5 PM. At 5:30 PM, attendees will engage in interactive mini learning sessions provided by Glendale Police, Fire, and Emergency Management staff on a variety of public safety topics:


  • Glendale Police will discuss the Real Time Crime Center and how the use of advanced technology helps to locate, prevent, and mitigate crime. Neighborhood Watch Program information will also be presented.
  • Emergency Management staff will provide information on personal preparedness and demonstrate the use of "GO" kits and community alert systems.
  • Glendale Fire will provide hands-only CPR and AED demonstrations and have mannikins for practice as time permits.


Cholla district residents who attend the sessions will also be eligible for prize drawings to win tickets to various upcoming events at Desert Diamond Arena in the city suite, as well as other items. The City is currently seeking to fill vacancies with the Municipal Property Corporation. This non-profit corporation assists the City with financing and construction of public facilities in accordance with specifications approved by City Council. MPC sells bonds to obtain the necessary funds to construct public facilities. The meeting frequency of the MPC is typically once per year, so time commitment is very minimal. The Glendale@Play Recreation Magazine Summer 2026 edition is now available with activities and events scheduled with Parks & Recreation from May through August. You can browse the magazine and/or change your options for receiving the magazine in print or digitally through this link.


Lastly, the vendor (VRC) from the recent April 4 Shred Event at Foothills Library, sent a summary report from the collection day. 9.113 tons (18,225 pounds) of paper was collected and shredded at the event.

CHOLLA DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS

Big Band Grandstand at Foothills Library: Monday, Apr. 27, 1 PM - 3 PM

Become a part of our Big Band, rehearsing and performing a variety of popular Big Band tunes. Musicians who can sight and read charts are encouraged to sign up, and everyone else is invited to attend rehearsals as part of our audience. Introduction to Birding at Foothills Library: Saturday, May 2, 8 AM - 10 AM

Learn about birds, birding, and birding resources at this workshop presented by Sonoran Audubon Society. First, take a guided walk outdoors, putting your knowledge to work as we tour around the park along Skunk Creek. Then, back in the library, join in a discussion about the birds we saw and have your birding questions answered. Click here for more information.

Daddy Daughter Dance: Saturday, Jun. 20, 6 PM - 8 PM (REGISTRATION NOW OPEN)

Aloha! Get ready for dancing, a photo booth, and games. Girls ages 3-15 bring your dad, grandfather, uncle, or any special male guest. It's $20 per Dad/Adult and $20 per daughter. Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center

This full-service facility is located at 5600 W. Union Hills Drive within the Cholla District and provides educational, recreational, fitness, and social opportunities for the Glendale community. For gym, aerobics, and swim schedules, visit the web site.

Foothills Library

The Foothills Library is located at 19055 N. 57th Avenue within the Cholla District and is adjacent to Foothills Park. For hours, general information, and upcoming events, visit the web site.

THUNDERBIRD CONSERVATION PARK CONSTRUCTION

The 59th Avenue Parking Lot/Trailhead is closed through December 2026. The 55th Avenue and 67th Avenue Parking Lots are currently open. Visit the web site for all construction schedules and information.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION & TRAFFIC ALERTS

Loop 101 Current and Upcoming Closures & Restrictions

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for the following closures as part of the Loop 101 widening project. You can subscribe to automatic project updates with this link.


Upcoming Traffic Control, Closures & Restrictions:

  • Westbound Loop 101 will be closed between I-17 and 51st Avenue from 10 PM Friday, April 24 to 5 AM Monday, April 27. The westbound Loop 101 on-ramps at 7th Street and 7th Avenue will also be closed. The north and southbound I-17 ramps to westbound Loop 101 will be closed.
  • DETOUR: North and southbound I-17 drivers may consider using Union Hills Drive or Bell Road to 51st Avenue to access westbound Loop 101.
  • The eastbound Loop 101 on-ramps at 75th and 67th Avenues will be closed nightly from 10 PM to 5 AM beginning Sunday, April 26 and ending Friday morning, May 1. Eastbound Loop 101 also will be narrowed to two lanes between 67th and 59th avenues during this time.
  • North and southbound 35th Avenue will be closed in both directions at Loop 101 nightly from 10 PM to 5 AM beginning Monday, April 27, and ending Wednesday morning, April 29.
  • DETOUR: Drivers may consider using the east and westbound frontage road (Beardsley) to navigate around the closure.
  • The westbound Loop 101 ramps to north and southbound I-17 will be closed nightly from 9 PM to 5 AM beginning Monday, April 27, and ending the morning of Thursday, April 30. Westbound Loop 101 also will be narrowed to two lanes between 27th and 51st avenues during this time. The westbound on-ramps at 27th and 35th Avenues also will be closed during this time.

Ongoing Restrictions & Closures:

  • 75th Avenue will continue to be narrowed to one through lane in each direction between Rose Garden Lane and Arrowhead Clubhouse Drive through the end of May.
  • DETOUR: Drivers may consider using 67th or 83rd Avenues to access 75th Avenue via Deer Valley Road or Union Hills Drive.


Ongoing Long Term Ramp Closures:

  • The northbound I-17 on-ramp at Deer Valley Road will be closed for approximately 50 days from Sunday, April 19.
  • DETOUR: Drivers may continue on the northbound frontage road from Deer Valley Road to enter northbound I-17 at Pinnacle Peak Road.
  • The eastbound Loop 101 off ramp at 59th Avenue is closed until late May.
  • DETOUR: Drivers may consider exiting at 67th Avenue and using the eastbound frontage road to reach 59th Avenue.
  • The eastbound Loop 101 on ramp at 67th Avenue is closed until mid-May
  • DETOUR: Drivers may consider taking the eastbound frontage road (Beardsley) to 59th Avenue to access Loop 101.
  • The westbound Loop 101 off-ramp at 75th Avenue is closed until early May.
  • DETOUR: Westbound drivers may exit at 67th Avenue and travel north to Deer Valley Road or south to Union Hills Drive to reach their destination. 75th Avenue will have ongoing lane restrictions between Loop 101 and Rose Garden Lane that are expected to end in mid-April.


Drivers should use caution and be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through any work zones.

67th Avenue Corridor Improvements Project Update (City of Peoria)

The City of Peoria's 67th Avenue Corridor Improvement Project, Pinnacle Peak Road to Happy Valley Road will widen 67th Avenue to three travel lanes in each direction and includes bike lanes, curb, gutter, sidewalk, streetlights, and drainage components to complete the streetscape. As this area is adjacent to the Cholla District, click here for all the latest construction updates to see how it impacts your drive.
