What do we mean when we say "mental health" and What should you be doing to stay "healthy"

  • Mental health is about how you FEEL, THINK and CONNECT with others.
  • Taking care of yourself can help keep your mind healthy and also support your recovery if you are dealing with a mental health condition.
  • SELF-CARE is not about bubble baths and spa treatments its about committing to yourself and choosing healthy habits that support your body physically and mentally.

  • 7 TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH:

  1. Move your body. Even a 30-minute walk can lift your mood. Shorter bursts count too—do what you can, even if its not 30 minutes, start with just 10 minutes a day.
  2. Eat well and drink water. Regular, balanced meals and staying hydrated help your energy and focus. Notice how caffeine and alcohol affect you—cutting back may help.
  3. Make sleep a priority. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Limit screen time before bed, as it can make falling asleep harder.
  4. Relax and recharge. Try simple activities like deep breathing, meditation, or stretching. Make time for things you enjoy, like music, reading, or being outdoors.
  5. Set simple goals. Focus on what needs to be done now and what can wait. It’s okay to say “no” when you feel overwhelmed.
  6. Practice gratitude. Each day, think of a few things you’re thankful for. Write them down or say them to yourself. Keep a positive outlook. Notice negative thoughts and try to replace them with more helpful ones.
  7. Stay connected. Talk to friends or family for support—you don’t have to handle everything alone.

FUN FACT:

Smiling is a powerful, universal expression that can boost your health by releasing endorphins and reducing stress-related hormones like cortisol, even if the smile is forced!

Laughing triggers the release of endorphins—the body's natural "feel-good" chemicals—which can temporarily relieve pain; reduces cortisol (stress hormones) and laughing for 10 minutes can burn 40 calories a day!

COMMUNITY HEALTH UPDATES:

Spring has been slow to arrive here in southern Maine.

As temperatures fluctuate, please stay alert for ticks. If you find one, remove it promptly by grasping it close to the skin and pulling straight out, then wash the area with soap and water. Contact us if the tick is engorged or you believe it was attached for more than 24 hours so we can discuss possible treatment options.

It’s normal for tick bites to cause mild irritation, itching, or redness at the site, and not all tick bites lead to Lyme disease. When in doubt, please reach out.

We are also continuing to see Influenza B in the community, along with some lingering cold viruses that can last 7–14 days. Please remain vigilant with handwashing!

With any luck, we’ll all be able to open our windows soon and enjoy some fresh spring air during some long awaited Spring Cleaning.
