With great sadness, we share the passing of North Catholic's longest full-time teacher, David Lyons (NC '62). Coach "Lefty" Lyons passed away Saturday, April 3, 2021. We received this sad news as we were ready to distribute our monthly newsletter. We will have much more on his passing and the legacy he leaves behind in next month's newsletter. Please keep his family in your prayers. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. This month's Alumni Spotlight
Melissa Takacs Jones
NC Class of 1995
|
|
Update us on your life since graduation
In attending North, Melissa followed in the footsteps of her sister Mary Beth ('91) and brother Mark ('93). After her graduation, Melissa attended the University of Dayton and received her BA in psychology. While at UD, she worked in retail and wound working for Gap, Inc for 10 years. After taking time off to raise her children, Melissa reentered the work force and for the past 10 years she has been with The North Face as a District Manager and is currently a Regional Training Manager. She and her family live in a suburb of Cincinnati with their English Lab, Piper.
Favorite Teachers and Classes
Her favorite Teacher was Mr. Militello. "Mr. Miltello was a great Spanish teacher. I took 4 years of Spanish with him and his patience and thoroughness to teach us still sticks with me today. Many times, in my workplace, I encounter people who speak Spanish and although I tell them I know “poco” I can still communicate with them thanks to Mr. Militello!"
Melissa's favorite coach was Frank Sands. "In 1991, Coach Sands was a new coach introducing a new sport to NC (crew), and he built this program into a successful, fun and hardworking team of young men and women. He was tough yet fair and motivational and produced many winning teams! He taught me drive persistence, hard work, the importance of teamwork, and how to win and lose with grace."
Favorite Memories of North Catholic
"There are so many! I loved any opportunity to connect with others both inside and outside of school. Every Friday in the winter, loading up onto a bus with the ski club to experience new adventures all while not breaking any bones! Every weekend in the spring loading up into our vans for Crew to row against some of the best teams and create some of the best memories with my teammates. Eating lunch with Sister Jean and always having her as someone we could lean on and talk to. School dances where we got to dress up and feel “grown up” (especially when we went to Metropol in the Strip District)."
Memories of Graduation Day
"Graduation day brings back memories of pride and happiness mixed with uncertainty and a little bit of fear. Leaving NC was bittersweet… going from a big fish in a little pond to a little fish in a huge pond was daunting, but I knew I had a great foundation, great people to lean on and a great education that set me up for success. I remember how happy my friends and I were—taking pictures with one another and our families. A bright and happy day."
Who were your Friends and Hangouts at North
" I hung out with Jill Dieckmann and Amanda Plesco regularly, but also my entire Crew team. Crew kept us so busy that you would often find us hanging out at the gym or boathouse or each other’s houses. When we wanted to get outside, we would frequent North Park and walk or run around the lake. And we always loved supporting our Trojans at the football games."
What Did North Catholic Mean to You?
"NC means so much to me. The formative teenage years that we all go through in high school can be tough, but the people at NC helped mold me and many others into happy, strong, faith-based adults today. The memories of High School are happy ones. I loved the sense of family and pride that we all carried and still carry today.
One of my favorite quotes is “you may not remember what people said or did, but you’ll always remember how they made you feel” and this holds true to my times at North—I reflect back on these days as some of the happiest days I had because of so many special people who I was lucky enough to engage with on a daily basis."

Flashback Photo
Last Month's Flashback
|
|
This is a picture taken from the 1987 Trojan yearbook. These are the members of the AV crew. They are (l-r): Fran Sweeney, Mike Wolff, and Leo Lacher. The AV crew, started in the early 70's by Mr Walter Quinn, carried movie projectors, overheads, and carts from a centralized room to various teachers in the building. They were seniors who helped to schedule and set up audio-visual equipment through out the school on a daily basis.
There were quite a few responses to the photo. Eric Jones ('87), Eric Zettelmayer ('87), Becky Brosky Pittman ('87) all recognized their fellow seniors. Classmate Andy Kiefer added, "The flashback picture is from the 1987 yearbook. The three guys are Fran Sweeney, Mike Wolff, and Leo Lacher. All three of them were seniors. I also graduated with them in 1987. They represented the A.V. Crew - which according to the yearbook you were the teacher who kept a “watchful” eye over these guys as they delivered the high tech audio visual equipment of the day to the classroom including film projectors, overhead projectors, and if I remember correctly there were even a couple TV's strapped to wheeled carts along with a VCR." Sheri Wedrick-Elder ('89) identified Leo Lacher, while Mark Hipsley ('89) knew they were the AV crew from the mid-80's.
Shannon Zeis Wishart ('01) who would also be a member of the AV crew didn't know who they were, but she knew what they were.

Military Legacy Scholarship
North Catholic has a Military Legacy Scholarship in honor of all alumni who have served in our nation’s military forces. The goal is to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship annually. To date we have raised over $30,000 to fund this annual scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to the student provided certain benchmarks are met. Every 4 years (or sooner) it is awarded to an incoming 9th grade student.
If you wish, you may make a contribution in someone's honor/memory. Donations can be made by sending checks payable to North Catholic, write "North Catholic Military Scholarship" in the memo, and mail to:
North Catholic High School
1617 Route 228
Cranberry Township, PA 16066
ATTN: Development Office
The John Latulippe Memorial Scholarship
The John Latuilippe Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Gabriel Grindstaff - NC class of 2024. Thank you to all who have donated.
Class of 1959 Scholarship
The NCHS Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund has awarded $4,600 Scholarships for the 2020-21 School Year to Brianna Venturella and Rosemary Kenney.
The Fund has awarded scholarships totaling $73,000 to nine recipients since the inception of the Fund. Contributions to the Fund can be made at any time and should be sent to the North Catholic Foundation, North Catholic High School, ATTN: Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.
Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship
The Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship continues to grow. To date, our classmates have raised over $35,000 in donations and pledges. Special shout out goes to ART MURPHY for his donation of $10,000. A big thank you to DENNY CRIBBINS for his generous donation over and above his regular monthly contribution.
The award for the 2020-2021 school year have been made to sophomores Thomas Zizan and Kaitlyn Kenaan. They are children of NC alums Dan Kenaan ('91) and Julie Rogalla ('87) and received $1,000 to help with tuition. Both students were on the first semester high honor roll.
We need the help of our classmates to grow the scholarship fund. If we can get more of our classmates to step up and help keep our legacy scholarship fund growing, there is no end to what the money can do to help a student to get the great education that North provided to us and continues to do so today. No contribution is too small. If you have questions, feel free to contact Bob Colbert (bobcolbert@comcast.net) or Walt Quinn (quinn.walter@comcast.net)
Thanks also to classmateS WAYNE BYERLY and DENNY CRIBBINS for committing to making a monthly donation. They join a number of fellow classmates including Wayne Young, Walt Quinn, and Bob Colbert who have been making a small monthly donation for the past three years that is put on their credit card. As Bob said, "it's less that the cost of a bottle of wine." If you would like to contribute a small monthly amount via your credit card, contact Amber Nicotra Morrison to set it up.
Class of 1969 Scholarship
At the 50th reunion in 2019, the Class of '69 pledged to raise $10,000 to show our support and appreciation for North Catholic's continuing work of educating young men and women.
To date, more than $7,000 has been raised by fifteen (15) classmates who have contributed. The fact that you contribute says that you stand with the Class of '69 and that is more important than the amount. Please help our class meet this very worthy goal and show the NC community that the Class of '69 remains "Forever True."
When you donate (online or check) please indicate Class of 1969 with your gift. If you need more information, please feel free to contact Joe Bradley(812-216-0394) or Amber Morrison at amorrison@northcatholic.org. Donations can be made payable to North Catholic, and mailed to North Catholic High School, Attn: Amber Morrison, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.
Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship
|
|
Kathy Hickey Monti's limitless love and passion for helping others was apparent to everybody she met. Her pride for North Catholic began in 1973, when her high school closed and she enrolled in the first co-ed class at North as a junior. Kathy led the charge to keep her school's basketball team together. As a standout guard and the very first team captain of North's first women's basketball program, Kathy and her fellow Trojanettes began a women's basketball dynasty that is alive and continues to thrive today. Following her graduation from North in 1975, Kathy played basketball in college and served as team captain and leader. Soon, she was recruited to come back to North and take on the role of Assistant Basketball Coach for the girl's team and with Coach Don Barth, her mentor, friend and former coach, led them to win multiple state championships. When North opened in Cranberry Township, Kathy continued to volunteer her time at the new school that she loved so dearly until her last breath. In 2017, just before her death, Kathy was voted unanimously into the North Catholic Hall of Fame. Kathy will long be remembered for her impact on hundreds of lives as a teacher, an assistant basketball coach and female role model for girls in athletics.
To continue Kathy's legacy and mission in life of helping others, a scholarship has been established in her name. More than $20,000 has already been raised. The purpose of the Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial support for a young woman who possesses the same leadership qualities that Kathy demonstrated in her life. This year's recipient is Dacia Lewandowski, NC '23. If you'd like to donate to this scholarship, please click here or checks can be sent payable to North Catholic with "Kathy Monti Scholarship Fund" in the Memo and mailed to North Catholic High School, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.

Thanks to many of you, our list of alumni who have served in our nation's military services has grown to almost 1,500. We thank all of you who have taken the time to help us with this endeavor. Perhaps you have noticed that recently an asterisk has been added next to name of more than two dozen individuals on the list. This indicates the individual died while in the military, either Killed in Action or a non-battle death. There may be more alumni who died while serving. If you know of someone that should have the asterisk added next to their name please let us know. We will always appreciate your efforts to help us update this honor roll of our alumni.
Thank you to all of our alumni for their service to our country!

Forensic News
The North Catholic forensic team finished out its regular season with a month of qualifying tournaments. Students who will be attending NCFL nationals "in" Minneapolis include Megan Foody, Abby Ondos, Lucy Miller, Jordan Dilley, Thomas O'Toole, Rebekah Bollman, Paulina Bradley, MIlan DeNicola, and Kayleigh Canavan. Alex Brown and Julia Kress are alternates for this competition. In addition, Bekah, Thomas, and Jordan are going "to" NSDA nationals in Des Moines in June.
At this point, one of the highlights of the season was the team's finish at the state tournament in mid-March. The one act play, presented by the drama department in October, placed 3rd in the state, Kayleigh Canavan placed 4th in commentary, Bekah Bollman placed 2nd in dramatic interp, and Thomas O'Toole was named state champion in dramatic interp. Because of the combined efforts of all of the members of the team, North Catholic placed among the top ten schools in the state in overall competition.
For the first time in North Catholic history, North Catholic had a team participating at the state level of mock trial competition. In order to get to that level, members of the team defeated three other teams in Butler and Beaver counties. Students who competed at the state level included Bekah Bollman, Mak Kirish, Isabella Gibson, Emma Ventresca, Ben Bollman, Abbie Sutton, Ben Sutton, Anastasia Davis, Ashley Linn, and Shannon Schollaert. Ms. Sandra Kozlowski (class of '93) served as attorney coach.

Planned giving is a wonderful way to prepare for the day we depart this life and enter into God's kingdom. By planning ahead, you can provide opportunities to young men and women by supporting North Catholic. Planned giving allows us to help continue the work of Christ and pass on our traditions and Catholic Marianist values. Gifts can be specified in one's will as either a dollar amount of a stated percentage of one's estate. A growing number of alumni have taken this step and discovered a great sense of joy and satisfaction that they are helping families. If you are interested in finding out more, please click here or contact Amber Nicotra Morrison in the Development Office at amorrison@northcatholic.org.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

New businesses are able to apply July 1. Businesses already enrolled in the programs can begin applying May 15 and have until June 28.
or call (412) 321-4823.
