Camp Receives "Paint Iowa Beautiful Award"

The Iowa 4-H Center was a recipient of the 2014 "Paint Iowa Beautiful" award. This program provides free paint to an array of public service projects in Iowa. The Iowa 4-H Foundation's award will be used to paint four buildings at the Iowa 4-H Center.

The center will receive paint from Diamond Vogel Paint through the "Paint Iowa Beautiful" program. 10 gallons of paint will be applied during the annual Spring Camp Volunteer Day on Saturday, April 26.

Thank you Diamond Vogel Paint and Keep Iowa Beautiful for supporting Iowa 4-H!

2014 4-H'ers for 4-H Campaign

The 2013-14 State 4-H Council has set their sites high in an effort to raise $26,513.14 for this year's 4-H'ers for 4-H campaign. Money raised through this annual campaign will be used for projects and programs for 4-H'ers statewide including to:

  • Provide financial assistance to help 4-H'ers attend 4-H camp or conference.
  • Help members from low-income families pay part of their annual 4-H program fee.
  • Fund speakers and entertainment at the State 4-H Youth Conference.
  • Construction of a tornado safe room at the Iowa 4-H Center.

State 4-H Council needs your help to provide Iowa 4-H members with their ticket to success! They are asking each 4-H club in Iowa to donate a minimum of $2.50 per member to the campaign. All clubs that meet the $2.50 per member goal will receive a special campaign certificate at their county recognition event. The top contributing counties and region will be formally recognized at the 2014 State 4-H Youth Conference in June.

Behind the scenes: Low profile, but high delivery!

It's getting to be that end-of-the-year grind for students, wrapping up projects, finishing papers, and preparing for finals to wind up the year.  For seniors, particularly those in college or not seeking post-secondary education, this is the "last" time they will face this semester-end completion stress... and they have the euphoria of graduation to look forward to!

For some, they are not only managing the balance of school, job searching, and living their daily lives, but also wrapping up necessary tasks on jobs or internships they have undertaken.  We, here at the Iowa 4-H Foundation, are so fortunate to have a history of great student interns who have done just that!  Student interns complete seemingly thankless jobs that render them resume building bullet points and confidence, but rarely get the high profile recognition they are so deserving of.  I'd like to take the opportunity to do just that for a couple of our recent interns who have left this place better than they found it.

Construction Is Underway
Melting snow and warmer weather doesn't only mean that spring has sprung, but it also means that camping season is right around the corner! Construction of a tornado safe room is underway at the Iowa 4-H Center, near Madrid, Iowa.

When bad weather strikes, our campers will be safe. This safe room is designed to protect over 150 youth and withstand 250 mph sustained winds for two hours. The safe room is constructed such that campers can reach shelter within five minutes.

The next phase of construction includes pouring the cement roof and allowing it to dry for 4-6 weeks. The target completion date for this project is June 1, 2014. Over $104,000 has been raised for the new safe room at camp but $56,000 is still needed to complete the project. Help keep our campers safe. Please consider a gift to the Iowa 4-H Foundation Tornado Safe Room project.

April is National Volunteer Month

Giving back and making a difference for Iowa 4-H Youth is at the heart of every 4-H volunteer, including hundreds of 4-H club leaders. April is National Volunteer Month, and we would like to take this time to thank our 17,000 volunteers for their contributions to the 4-H program. Wow! 17,000! Did you know that is enough to fill Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State University, and then some of the parking lot? THANK YOU, volunteers, for helping us to "make the best better" for Iowa's 4-H Youth.

Make April count! Join us for Camp Clean-Up Day at the Iowa 4-H Center on Saturday, April 26. Volunteers from all across Iowa will join together to give their time and talents to help prep the camping grounds for our campers this summer.

"I am happy to be here at the foundation and look forward to getting to know everyone better," says Khan. We are excited to have him as a member of our team at the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Iowa Youth Head to Washington, D.C.
Iowa was represented by four 4-H members at National 4-H Conference from April 5-10 in Washington, D.C. To attend National 4-H Conference, 4-H members had to apply and were selected, based on their involvement in 4-H.

Members selected include: Raeann Hanlon, Calhoun County; Paul Elliott, Linn County; and Renae Drey and Tyler Pickhinke, Sac County. These four delegates will represent Iowa's interests in the national 4-H program.

This trip was made possible by generous donors through the Iowa 4-H Foundation including: Des Moines Register; David and Valerie Pace, Roseville, Minn.; Harry and Phyllis Davis, Williamsport, Md.; and donors to the Chuck Morris Retirement Honorarium.

Foundation Receives $500 Gift From DuPont Pioneer
The Color Sorting Waxy Seed team was recently awarded the 2013 Owen J. Newlin Business Excellent Award. The DuPont Pioneer team has selected to donate their award money to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Team members include Steve Corak, Dick Hora, Veronique Keppenne, Mike O'Neil, Jason Swartz, and
Bill Tomlinson.

Waxy corn is sold to customers who market that grain for food processing, adhesives and paper products. DuPont Pioneer waxy inbreds require a high trait purity, large volumes of batches tested lower than the specifications and had to be discarded. The team worked together to modify existing equipment, resulting in a reliable waxy corn sorter that will identify and remove non-waxy kernels from batches of waxy seed which previously did not exist. This innovation will lead to at least $4 million savings annually in seed that would have normally been discarded.

Thank you DuPont Pioneer for your $500 gift to help support Iowa 4-H!
