Have you ever been in a situation in which you were attacked? Have you ever been caught off guard or felt threatened in a situation for which you weren't prepared? Have you ever wondered what you would do if you had to physically defend yourself or someone you love? Many women find themselves thinking about these situations with uncertainty. Many women have had to struggle through actual incidents of assault. While we can't take all of the bad out of the world around us, we can all be better prepared to deal with it.
I want you to think about self-defense for a few minutes. What would it look like if you were to sign up for one of those classes? If you're envisioning images of Kung-Fu movies, floating high kicks, and back flips- hang on. I've got something different in mind that works well for many women. It's called RAD (Rape Aggression Defense). RAD is a women's self-defense class that teaches realistic and easy to use techniques. This is a program for ladies of all abilities. RAD caters to beginners. You don't have to be an athlete to take this short course. It's not a karate class and there is no special clothing or items to buy. In fact, it's held at the Irving Police Department several times a year. The best part- it's completely free.
We teach you the proper way to punch and kick. We teach you how to get out of tight places such as bear hugs and choke holds. This class gives you many options for your mental and physical "tool box" so you are better prepared to deal with threatening situations. RAD is a 4-day class (total of 12 hours). Each night we have a lecture/Q&A time followed by time in the gym learning hands-on techniques. The last day is the best! Our male officers wear fully padded suits and you go through short scenarios in which you actually get to use your new moves.
If you are unable to join us at IPD, please check your area police agencies as some of them offer RAD programs.
This is something that you can do!
