Bundestag Member Peter Beyer Shares Insights on Transatlantic Relations and Current EU Issues
GACC NY hosted a special roundtable discussion last month featuring Peter Beyer, Member of the Bundestag, who graciously took time from his busy schedule for an
Peter Beyer
informal briefing and candid exchanges with members of the GACC NY Board of Directors. The group convened at the GACC NY office in downtown Manhattan. Beyer has been a member of the Bundestag since 2009 and currently is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, where he serves as his parliamentary group's rapporteur on relations with Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia.

Beyer began his roundtable conversation by expressing how encouraged he is that after four months of intense negotiations Germany reached an agreement to form a coalition government. He pointed out that compromises made to form the government ensure the continued stability of Germany - something that is reassuring to Europe and the rest of the world. He said key German government ministries have been filled but others are still in the process of being confirme.

Workshop on New European Data Protection Regulation
The spotlight on data protection is becoming quite intense, especially in light of the recent controversy involving Facebook. But even before that occurred, this topic was making headlines with Europe's impending General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), set to go into effect this May 25.

With this in mind, the GACC NY organized a two-hour lunch workshop last month to explain the basics of GDPR and what its implications will be for US and European businesses operating on both sides of the Atlantic. Alexander C. Opaschowski, Ernst & Young's (EY) German Business Center Leader for North America & Mexico, welcomed more than 20 participants at the Times Square office of EY. Fabrice Naftalski, Global Head of Data Protection and IP/IT Law at EY, led the discussion and took questions from the business professionals in attendance.

The audience was quite eager to learn how GDPR will affect their particular business processes. Potential scenarios for US companies under the new regulation were put forth, and questions surfaced about what will be required of these companies to properly adapt. C learly, this is a topic that will continue to unfold.

Career Services Team Participates in J-1 Visa Advocacy Day
GACC New York Career Services team members Chris Gallagher, Sarah Diehl and Jessica von Tresckow spent a few days in Washington, DC last month visiting congressional offices to engage with elected officials on  J-1 visa intern and trainee programs.

The team joined more than 100 members of The Alliance for International Exchange - the leading collective public policy voice of the exchange community - in meeting with Senate and House staff to convey how much companies and communities throughout the US benefit from J-1 visa programs.

During this annual Advocacy Day, exchange sector professionals visited more than 100 congressional offices representing both parties from over 30 states to promote these valuable State Department programs. The international exchanges enjoy bipartisan support in both the House and Senate; in districts as diverse as rural Georgia to midtown Manhattan.

"Representative Sanford's office (SC-1) was very enthusiastic to learn how the J-1 visa supports the many German companies in the first district - and the local jobs they represent," Gallagher noted.

GACC New York Career Services has participated in The Alliance Advocacy Day for five consecutive years, promoting two J-1 programs: trainee and intern. Both visa options give young people from around the world the chance to experience American culture, business and technology. In return, GACC member companies benefit from the hard work, enthusiasm and innovative spirit of J-1 participants.
