From The Desk of Mr. Johnston
Dear St. Alphonsus Families,

I hope everyone has had a great week and stayed away from any April Fool’s Day pranks today! I wanted to give a friendly reminder of the dress code as we enter April and we once again allow students to wear shorts and skorts:

Shorts and skorts must be worn as close to knee length as possible on both uniform and non-uniform days. Navy or black solid tights, bike shorts, or leggings must be worn under skirts, and rolling of skirts, which involves intentionally shortening skirts by rolling the tops over, is prohibited.

Socks on uniform days should be solid color (white, navy, black or gray), with either a small logo or no logo at all.

Also, in exciting news, please see below the return of more student activities, including: a Spring Session of Chess Scholars, the return of Junior Forensics in May and the return of the Washington D.C. trip for 7th and 8th grade students in the fall. We are so excited to be able to continue to bring back these exciting extracurricular activities for our students!

Please enjoy the rest of the newsletter.
Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!
Russ Johnston

April Last Friday of the Month Donation Drive
5th Grade Service Project for Change Our Hearts

Our 5th grade class is hosting a donation drive during the month of April. Any student who donates will be able to have an Out-Of-Uniform Day on the last Friday of the month, April 29.

The parish theme of Lent this year is Change Our Hearts, and the closing prayer references Spring Cleaning, so the 5th grade has asked all students to help them with a cleaning supplies donation!

Here is the breakdown of requested donations, by class:

3K: wash rags/small towels
4K: rubber gloves/Swiffer mop pads
5K: paper towels/lint roller
1st: garbage bags
2nd: cleaning sponges/ small/medium cleaning bucket
3rd: dish soap/Pledge (dust cleaner)
4th: all-purpose cleaner/toilet bowl cleaner
5th: laundry detergent
6th: Windex/scrub brush
7th: cleaning vinegar
8th: bleach/sm. broom with dustpan

These supplies will help service over 50 families in our area, through our Parish Center. Thank you in advance for your donations!
Spring Extracurriculars Are Back!
Join us for the Spring 2022 Season of Chess Scholars
All students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade are eligible to sign up for Chess Scholars. The spring season will take place on Tuesdays from April 26 to June 7, from 3:05 to 4:05pm.

Sign up for Junior Forensics!
Junior Forensics is back! Junior Forensics provides students in grades 3-5 the opportunity to explore public speaking by presenting a prepared selection before an audience. The goal is to build confidence and help the students feel more comfortable with public speaking.
Junior Forensics will meet on Mondays from 3-4pm starting in May. Mrs. Gutche and Miss Temple will work with the students on selecting a piece, voice level, vocal inflections, and more. It will culminate in a Parent Night at the end of the school year where all members will present their pieces to a larger audience. More information and a permission slip will be coming home soon!
THE WASHINGTON DC TRIP IS BACK!
St. Alphonsus Catholic School is excited to announce that we are bringing back the 7th and 8th grade Washington D.C trip in the Fall of 2022. This trip is open to any student who will be in 7th or 8th grade next year. We will be holding a parent meeting on April 6th at 6:00pm in the Community Room.

This trip will take place from October 6-9, 2022, and your children will be accompanied by Ms. Tora Armstrong and other school staff on the trip. We will have a final number of chaperones from staff once we are sure how many students are coming. The trip is run through Junior Tours which we have used in the past. The price for the trip also will be finalized when we have a set number of students attending.

Please join us for the meeting to hear the details of the trip so we can start planning!

Staff Spotlight
Each week we want to highlight a member of our amazing staff so you can learn more about the educators working with your students at St. Al's. This week, we're featuring Profe Bob Wallace, our Spanish teacher!

Profe Wallace has been a teacher for close to 15 years, three of those being here at St. Al's. This year he is also teaching 6th Grade Social Studies!

When asked about his teaching philosophy, Profe says, "I like to create a desire to learn in the students, help them to develop a sense of self-confidence, and prepare them for what is coming next."

Some of his favorite projects in his classes are the 4th grade Spanish Weather Report project, 6th grade Spanish Calavera project (family history project that was featured in this newsletter last fall), and the 8th grade Resort project.

"My favorite part of working at St. Al's is the collaboration among our awesome staff!" says Profe. "Working here with students and staff is very rewarding."

In addition to teaching at St. Al's, Profe is also on the Milwaukee Archdiocese Foreign Language Task Force for Curriculum Development. In his spare time he loves to golf, hitting the links almost every day each summer, and is also really enjoying his new role as a grandpa!

Parish News
Servers are needed for the St. Al’s Parish Benefit Auction Friday, April 29 at the Boerner Botanical Gardens!

The Parish Benefit Auction is on Friday, April 29 at the Boerner Botanical Gardens, and we need student volunteers to serve at the auction! This is a great opportunity to promote our school and get your service hours in!

All students in grades 4 thru 8 are eligible to serve. Students should arrive at 4:30 (tentative) and will be done between 9:30 and 10:00. Students will assist with table and other set up, serve appetizers to guests during cocktail hour, and will work in the dining room, clearing salad plates, serving entrees, bringing coffee carafes to the tables and clearing plates, glasses, silverware, etc. at the end of the meal.

Students will also receive dinner! Cousins is donating sandwiches, and we will also have chips, cookies, soda and water available.

Students should wear a plain, white shirt or blouse and black pants or skirt with comfortable, closed toe shoes.

Please contact Sue Ruedinger with questions.

The auction is the only parish-wide fundraiser that supports all St. Al’s programs, including the School. We appreciate your support and hope to see you there!

Merci beaucoup!
