California Coastal Commission Approves Malibu Fire Rebuilding Code Amendments

On Thursday, April 10, the California Coastal Commission approved the City of Malibu’s Local Coastal Program (LCP) Amendments for homes damaged by fires and other natural disasters during their public hearing.

Ocean Water Advisory Lifted for Fire-Impacted Areas



The LA County Department of Public Health (LADPH) has lifted the Ocean Water Quality Advisory from Las Flores State Beach to Santa Monica State Beach after rigorous testing showed no wildfire-related contaminants at harmful levels. The public may now enjoy swimming and surfing at these beaches, but should still avoid fire debris in the water and around burned properties. LA County Community Listening Session on Emergency Alerts and Evacuations

The County of Los Angeles invites residents to a community listening session to share your experiences with emergency alerts and evacuations during the recent Palisades Fire.

The session is being hosted by McChyrstal Group, the third-party consultant retained by LA County to conduct an independent review of alert and evacuation processes for the recent fires.

DEADLINE: LA County Department of Public Works Right-of-Entry (ROE) Forms Due

Owners of destroyed structures have the opportunity to opt-in to a government-sponsored program to have their properties cleared of fire debris by the Army Corps of Engineers. Complete and submit the Right of Entry (ROE) form and authorize the government to manage debris removal on your property by April 15.

Property owners who elect to opt-out of the government-sponsored program will be required to obtain County approval before removing any fire debris.

Assistance to Replace Lost or Damaged Medical Equipment

Albertsons Companies Foundation & FireAid have partnered with the Disability Community Resource Center to replace Durable Medical Equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.) lost or damaged in the 2025 LA Fires at no cost. To apply, call (310) 390-3611.

Get a Free Home Wildfire Assessment from the City of Malibu

The City’s Fire Safety Liaisons can conduct a 30-to-45-minute exterior inspection of your property to identify potential vulnerabilities. Based on their evaluation, they will share specific actions to help minimize or eliminate risks from a wind-driven wildfire. You’ll get a checklist of steps to take, such as removing dead vegetation or wood furniture that is touching the house, or covering eve vents with steel mesh to harden your home and property. Meet the Malibu Rebuild Team!

City staff members from Planning, Environmental Sustainability, Public Works, Public Safety, City Clerk, Finance, Community Services, and Media teams have been meeting daily to address the rebuild and recovery needs in Malibu.

This includes supporting the Malibu Rebuild Center, community town halls, programs with external partners, local businesses, and ongoing operations with the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department and the California National Guard. Staff also participate in various Los Angeles County task forces to enhance support for our community.

Malibu Rebuild Center Progress Update: March 10 - April 4

The City is pleased to announce progress on the rebuilding effort since opening the Malibu Rebuild Center on Monday, March 10:

• Initial Rebuild Appointments/Site Verification – 168 Initial visits / 33 Follow-up visits 
• Architectural Plan Review – 6 Pending / 4 Approved
• Building Plan Check Submittal – 0 Received/ 0 Approved
• Certificate of Occupancy – 0

After the Architectural Plan Review and approval, the property owner receives a Planning Entitlement – a Planning Department approval, typically for development or specified use, that states the project meet the City’s zoning requirements. If applicable, the Planning Entitlement allows the property owner to proceed to the building permit process. A Planning Entitlement is valid for a number of years, depending upon the type of entitlement.

The next step is to apply for a Building Plan Check to obtain a Construction Permit, allowing the property owner to begin construction. The final step is to complete inspections for a Certificate of Occupancy, allowing property owners to move in.
