This special recognition honors the enduring legacy and ongoing contributions of farmworkers who play a vital role in our region’s agricultural and economic strength. The Board invites community members to join in acknowledging the history, resilience, and advocacy of the farmworkers movement, and to reflect on the progress made toward equity and fair working conditions.

CalFire Rolls Out Statewide Campaign to Promote Home Hardening

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) encourages residents to act now to protect their homes and property from the growing year-round wildfire threat. Simple actions, such as mowing grass, trimming trees, removing dead vegetation, and using noncombustible hardscape materials near structures, can make a significant difference in reducing wildfire risk.

Home hardening can include upgrading roofs, vents, windows, and siding, as well as enclosing eaves and removing potential ember entry points. Many effective home hardening measures can be completed at low cost, such as sealing gaps, installing ember-resistant vents, and maintaining gutters free of debris.

In addition to hardening structures, creating defensible space around a home will help slow or stop the spread of wildfire and reduces the chance of ignition from embers or flames.

This space is divided into three zones:

Zone 0 (0–5 feet from your home)

The ember-resistant zone, where combustible materials should be removed.

Zone 1 (5–30 feet)

The lean and clean zone, focused on reducing flammable vegetation.

Zone 2 (30–100 feet)

The reduced fuel zone, designed to decrease fire intensity.

Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility, by taking proactive steps, residents can significantly improve their home’s chance of surviving a wildfire while also helping protect their communities and first responders.

A Celebration of Hope - National Donate Life Month April 2026

April 1st marks Donate Life Living Donor Day, a day dedicated to honoring the extraordinary generosity of living organ donors who give the ultimate gift of life through kidney, liver, and other transplants. It is a powerful reminder of the compassion and courage shown by individuals whose donations offer renewed health, hope, and years of life to recipients and their families.

Living donation remains one of the most impactful forms of giving, often connecting strangers through life-saving acts of kindness and strengthening the fabric of our communities.

In the Bay Area, residents are supported by Donor Network West, the federally designated organ procurement organization serving Northern California and Northern Nevada. Based in San Ramon, Donor Network West leads efforts in donor registration, family support, education, and coordination of lifesaving transplants across the region.

Donor Network West was a recipient of Supervisor Andersen's Contra Costa Community Impact Funding grant process, further strengthening its ability to expand outreach, education, and donor registration efforts within our local communities.

As we observe Living Donor Day, residents are encouraged to learn more about organ and tissue donation and to honor the remarkable individuals who make the gift of life possible.
