Ford Oakville to begin

$1.8B transformation

in 2024

Ford Motor Company is investing $1.8 billion in its Oakville Assembly Complex to transform it into a high-volume hub of electric vehicle manufacturing in Canada.

"I congratulate and thank Ford for their EV vision and faith in the future of Oakville, Ontario, and Canada for growing their business," Mayor Burton said in response to the news.

The newly renamed 'Oakville Electric Vehicle Complex' will begin to retool and modernize in 2024 to prepare for the production of next-generation EV's.

This initiative will mark the first time a full-line automaker has announced plans to produce passenger EV's in Canada for the North American market.

Town continues to do its part to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050

The 32nd annual Earth Day Clean Up of Oakville Nature Sites will take place on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 9 am sharp at an all-time record sixty-five nature sites across all of Oakville’s seven wards.

The Town is committed to doing its part to achieve our Net Zero targets. Highlights of the town’s green initiatives include:



• Offering free transit for youth and seniors on May 1, 2023 will encourage uptake in public transit. A transit bus takes 40 vehicles off the road, saving 70,000 litres of fuel and reduces air pollutants by nine tonnes a year.

• We are on track to acquire more zero-emission battery-electric buses to be used for conventional services in early 2024. Over the next five years, approximately 50 per cent of Oakville Transit’s fleet will be converted from diesel to electric. When our fleet is fully electrified, our reductions in greenhouse gas emissions will be even greater.

• We are on track to reaching our goal of a 40 per cent tree canopy. Our town-wide tree canopy coverage has reached 31.2%. The town’s next Urban Forest Management Plan update will be released in early 2023. It will include recommendations to ensure the growth and sustainability of the town’s urban forest.

• The Town is on track to meet and exceed our 2030 climate change targets: 20 per cent reduction in energy use and 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, with reductions of 24.7 per cent and 29.3 per cent respectively over our baseline.

• The town has integrated sustainable building design characteristics into several of our facilities, achieving LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in seven of them.

Community Safety Wellbeing Plan enables Halton to continue to engage our indigenous communities in a meaningful way

Today's Regional Council workshop meeting provided an opportunity for Members of Regional Council to learn more about their roles and responsibilities as members of the Board of Health for Halton Region under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

Mayor Burton inquired about what the above presentation slide which mentioned meaningful engagements with Indigenous communities would be in practice.

"I'll speak to a favourite of yours, Mayor Burton - the Community Safety and Well-being Plan," Dr. Hamidah Meghani said.

"Public Health is engaged in that plan... There are ways for us to actively engage with stakeholders to do this work. We are ensuring that the work we are doing with our partners relates to health issues for Halton residents and health equity."

"It's great to have another reason for all of us to be proud of our leading role in community safety and well-being planning," Mayor Burton said.
