Holy Week 2022

Issue Of: April 15, 2022
"It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last."
Luke 23:44-46

From The Pastor's Desk:

How does one write an article for a newsletter that, while sent on Good Friday, some may not read until Easter dawn? To some of you, I'm writing in the midst of spiritual sorrow, witnesses to the power of sin and death. To others, you are discovering this newsletter after the finding of the empty tomb, and your emotions match the bright colors of Easter eggs and cupcakes.
As a Church, we exist in both of those spaces, the ending and the beginning. It is in this week that perhaps we name the reversal - the Omega that helps us see the Alpha, the forever truth that explains our past and present. May this Holy Weekend, the long Sadder-Friday, and Easter Vigil's bonfire and light of dawn, help you to encounter the God who Lives, the Spirit who Unites, the Lord of Life!
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn

(This Is Not A Joke!)
Sunday, April 24th
8:30 AM & 10:00 AM

A number of American churches are resurrecting an old Easter custom begun by the Greeks in the early centuries of Christianity. "Holy Humor Sunday" is a celebration of Jesus' resurrection on the Sunday after Easter. For centuries in Eastern Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant countries, the week following Easter Sunday was observed by the faithful as "days of joy and laughter" with parties and picnics to celebrate Jesus' resurrection. Churchgoers and pastors played practical jokes on each other, drenched each other with water, told jokes, sang, and danced. The custom was rooted in the musings of early church theologians that God played a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead.  Holy Humor Sunday services not only give Christians an opportunity for ongoing celebrations of the greatest miracle in human history - Jesus' resurrection - it also gives each of us an opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for our own smaller resurrections in this world and this life.
Please join us as we celebrate Holy Humor Sunday at Lord of Life.

Matt Wheeler Concert
Saturday, April 30th, At 7:00 PM
At Lord Of Life

Join us for this special event at Lord Of Life on Saturday, April 30th at 7:00 PM. A troubadour, a poet with a guitar, a stage banter-conversationalist - all are terms that describe Matt Wheeler's music & performance style well. Matt’s songwriting paints pictures with words, often drawing inspiration from classic works of literature or simply spinning new original stories in song. Lyrics and dynamics play a key role, as each song really means something, and each one is delivered with an honesty that is compelling.  Matt draws audiences in with engaging stories and interaction, while shining the spotlight on the lyrical strength of his songs.
No tickets are needed. A free will offering will be available after the concert.

“Warm sound & amp; heartfelt lyrics. If you are a fan of Josh Ritter give a listen to Matt!” - Helen Leicht, WXPN Philadelphia

Ukraine Relief
Through
Lutheran Disaster Response
Lutheran World Relief will be supporting assistance efforts to refugees who are victims of the Russian invasion into the FREE and INDEPENDENT nation of Ukraine. As of this writing, it is estimated by the United Nations that over 4 and a half million Ukrainians have fled their homeland and many more will follow. It is also estimated that over 10 million Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes.
A pledge of a $50,000 matching fund has been made for the first $50,000 given to LDR. If you would like to contribute to this effort, use the link below which will enable you to directly contribute.

"Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, I will not be shaken. For in the day of trouble, God will give me shelter, hide me in the hidden places of the sanctuary, and raise me high upon a rock. Even now my head is lifted up above my enemies who surrround me. Therefore I will offer sacrifece in the sanctuary, sacrifices of rejoicing; I will sing and make music to the Lord."
Psalm 27: 3, 5, 6 NRSV

Another Way To Help
Ukrainians In Need

We have all been affected by the reports and television coverage of the invasion of Ukraine. Most of us want to know how we can help.
Lord of Life is making cloth tote bags in a sunflower print to honor the strength of Ukraine. The fabric is heavy cotton and fully washable. They are ideal for groceries especially with the new law coming in May banning plastic bags.
We ask for a donation of $12.00 for each bag. The profit will be sent to the ELCA Disaster Response to benefit the people of Ukraine. The bags will be available after services beginning in April, or you may order them by calling:
Penny Miller: 609-760-9745
Or
Barbara Wagner: 609-744-3262
Thank you in advance for your anticipated support!

From The Editor:

LifeLines Ending Song:
This ending song has been "standard" for many Good Friday worship services over the years. It was composed in 1912 by Methodist evangelist George Bennard (1873-1958) and became popular during the Billy Sunday evangelistic campaigns in the 1920’s. In 1952, it was recorded by county singer Ernest Tubbs and became very well known. Numerous singers had versions of this wonderful hymn over the years that followed. Here is one by John Berry, the Grammy winning country singer who has recorded many religious tunes during his career.

"So I'll cherish the old rugged cross.
Till my trophies at last I lay down.
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown." (Refrain)
