Secretary of Education visits Wood Gormley
Education Secretary Dr. Ryan Stewart visited Wood Gormley Elementary on Wednesday, April 14th as part of the NM Public Education Department's "Ring the Bell" effort to welcome back staff, students and families. The goal is to support staff and students as they implement COVID-safe practices and return to in-person learning. Superintendent Dr. Veronica C. Garcia, students and school and District staff welcomed Secretary Dr. Stewart to the school as he explored how the school is operationalizing COVID-safe practices and visited classrooms, staff and students.

Student COVID vaccination clinic to be held April 17th
Students ages 16 and 17 can receive the COVID vaccine on Saturday, April 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Desert Sage Academy. The Northeast Region of the NM Department of Health (DOH) event is open to students in Santa Fe County.

SFPS students who have registered through the NMDOH website are being pulled by SFPS for the event, which has capacity for 600 students.
 
Given that only the Pfizer vaccine is approved for this age range and that the medication is approved via an Emergency Use Authorization, SFPS will be requiring a paper consent form that the parent must sign in person at the time of vaccination. The consent is available by clicking here.
 
SFPS is reviewing options to vaccinate students who may not be able to attend this event.

CHS to be featured in NBC's Roll Up Your Sleeves
Capital High School (CHS) is among the shining stars to be spotlighted on Sunday, April 18th when NBC airs its “Roll Up Your Sleeves” vaccination special at 5:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. ET). The special seeks to encourage Americans to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The special is presented by Walgreens.

“The vaccines have allowed the district to return to in-person learning, which has been such an exciting time for our staff and students and a wish come true,” said Superintendent Dr. Veronica C. Garcia. “I am so excited that Capital High School’s amazing students, teachers and culture are being shared nationwide and that we are returning students to a degree of normalcy.”

The segment on CHS will feature Principal Jaime Holladay, Dean of Students Ben Gomez, Maaite Girdner, a 9th-grade teacher, and student Yulissa Dominguez Flores, and focus on the excitement of returning to in-person learning for staff and students.

CHS aparecerá en Roll Up Your Sleeves de NBC

SFPS Board awards NMSBA Excellence Awards to outstanding leaders
The SFPS Board of Education awarded 2021 Excellence in Student Achievement Awards from the New Mexico School Boards Association (NMSBA) to 15 individuals at its April 15th meeting. All 15 were selected by the Board.

"In a year full of education heroes, these honorees stand out for their work and commitment on behalf of students, families and the staff members who work on their behalf,” said SFPS Board President Kate Noble. “We are so grateful for the extraordinary efforts of everyone this year, and are glad to celebrate these exceptional individuals and organizations."

The following accomplishments this year distinguish the award recipients:

Adelante Program: The Adelante Program serves as an essential support for the District's students and families, providing services for those experiencing homelessness, including advocacy, tutoring, evening programs and material aid.

Marissa Bonifer: In her 20th year of service to SFPS, Ms. Bonifer led and accomplished the monumental task of preparing schools to receive staff and students. No matter the time or day, she worked hard to have sites and rooms ready for in-person learning to take place.

Earth Care/Santa Fe Mutual Aid/YUCCA: Earth Care is focused on parent and youth leadership, and this year created Youth at the Center with SFPS as the city planned the new Santa Fe Southside Teen Center. Last summer, it created Youth United for Climate Crisis Action (YUCCA), which the District also partnered on, for a climate strike. And Earthcare created, with other organizations, the Santa Fe Mutual Aid Network, an assortment of volunteers, staff and organizations that is getting food and money into homes.

Superintendent Dr. Veronica C. Garcia: Superintendent Dr. Garcia views her work as a labor of love; it is not a job, but a vocation. On June 30th, she will retire. At the Board's March 11th meeting, the following comments were shared: President Kate Noble said that the debt to her from the state, the educational and Santa Fe community and her, personally, is impossible to quantify. Vice President Rudy Garcia said the first public education secretary under Governor Bill Richardson did an excellent job and is still doing a really great job. Secretary Boses thanked her for showing what it truly means to be a public servant. Member Dr. Carmen Gonzales said her leadership has been amazing and she will be forever grateful for that. Member Lorraine Price, the only Board member remaining from the original board that hired Dr. Garcia as superintendent, said it seems like we have been together for many, many years. It has been a wonderful journey. 

Michael Hagele: Principal Hagele led ECO through the pandemic and was instrumental in increasing ECO's graduation rate by 20% from the previous graduating class, which marks dramatic growth.

Anita Hett: Ms. Hett has led SFPS through the pandemic with grace and strength, committing hours beyond imagination to nurture and educate staff and our community while ensuring the District remains compliant with rigorous state and federal requirements.

Shawna LaValley: For over 8 years, Ms. LaValley has supervised SFPS' contract custodians. She and her crews have maintained their steadfast work ethic throughout the pandemic, committing countless hours to readying facilities for reentry of staff and students.

Kristen Lewis: As an early literacy specialist in Curriculum & Instruction, Ms. Lewis is dedicated to student learning and teacher development and support. She has been phenomenal in supporting instruction in our elementary schools by working closely with teachers on engaging lesson development and data analysis.

Carl Marano: Principal Marano told the Santa Fe New Mexican, “My motto from day one — and I know it might sound cheesy — is we put students first." Under his guidance, SFHS increased its 2019-2020 graduation rate by 11%, contributing to an overall increase of 8% in the District's graduation rate.

Mary Massey: Ms. Massey, SFPS's extended learning coordinator and a public school educator in New Mexico for more than 25 years, is transitioning into the leadership role for both the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. This transition comes as she prepares to ensure her work over the last five years as extended learning coordinator and program director for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers After School Programs propels a new grant funding cycle.

Grace Mayer: Ms. Mayer is a long-time president of NEA-Santa Fe and works incredibly hard with the District on collective bargaining. She is a tireless advocate for teachers and staff and has a much wider purview even than the members of her bargaining unit. She always comes with innovative ideas and solutions, and never seems to run out of them. Ms. Mayer never stops showing up to make sure there is a strong staff voice brought to the District level and that we take care of the most important folks in our world, who are the people who work in SFPS. 

Cynthia Maynard: As Multi-Layered System of Supports (MLSS) coordinator. Ms. Maynard monitors data for every student, working with their teachers to intervene and assuring that interventions promote student success. Her work ensures that all students will receive the support they need, at their level, for a successful future.

Dr. Tom Ryan: Dr. Ryan led the unprecedented effort that made SFPS one of the first school districts to stand up a remote learning program when the pandemic hit in 2020. He is a state, national and international leader in educational technology.

Linda Sink: Ms. Sink, deputy superintendent for Teaching and Learning, is highly respected for leading SFPS' curriculum reform and alignment efforts over the past five years. During this past school year, she led some of the most innovative professional development initiatives regarding hybrid and remote instructional practices. Her dedication, expertise and commitment to teaching and learning have provided the District with a strong foundation. She will retire at the end of this school year.

Dr. Neal Weaver: Dr. Weaver has been a stalwart leader in making the digital learning experience central to learning across all academic endeavors in SFPS. COVID-19 moved technology to the forefront, and, through his leadership, there’s no going back. Because of Santa Feans’ support of educational technology notes, Dr. Weaver has furthered the District's ability to provide students with critical technology so they can succeed in a world that is forever changed.

La Junta de Educación de SFPS otorgó los Premios 2021 a la Excelencia en el Logro Estudiantil de la Asociación de Juntas Escolares de Nuevo México (NMSBA) a 15 personas en su reunión del 15 de abril. Los 15 fueron seleccionados por la Junta.

"En un año lleno de héroes de la educación, estos homenajeados se destacan por su trabajo y compromiso en nombre de los estudiantes, las familias y los miembros del personal que trabajan en su nombre", dijo la presidenta de la Junta de SFPS, Kate Noble. "Estamos muy agradecidos por lo extraordinario esfuerzos de todos este año, y nos complace celebrar a estas personas y organizaciones excepcionales ".

Earth Care / Santa Fe Mutual Aid / YUCCA: Earth Care se centra en el liderazgo de padres y jóvenes, y este año creó Youth at the Center con SFPS cuando la ciudad planeó el nuevo Santa Fe Southside Teen Center. Mary Massey: La Sra. Linda Sink: La Sra. Su dedicación, experiencia y compromiso con la enseñanza y el aprendizaje le han proporcionado al Distrito una base sólida. Se jubilará al final de este año escolar.
 
Dr. Neal Weaver: El Dr. Weaver ha sido un líder incondicional en hacer que la experiencia de aprendizaje digital sea fundamental para el aprendizaje en todos los esfuerzos académicos en SFPS.
