Moving on to Nationals!
|
|
The silver anniversary of the Quigley Catholic Mock Trial team has proven to be a memorable one. The undefeated 2013 Quigley Catholic's Mock Trial team will be packing their bags and heading to Indianapolis, IN to compete in the Mock Trial Nationals in May 9-11. The team is led by Mr. Tim Waxenfelter a 2012 Pennsylvania High School Speech League Hall of Fame Inductee and coach for all 25 years, and Attorney advisor, Ahmed Aziz. The team won the school it's 7th State Mock Trial Championship; a state record. The next closest school is the team they defeated in the finals, Greensburg-Salem, coming in with four state championships. While this feat is impressive no matter the circumstances, what makes it even more remarkable is that there is no school size classifications in these Mock Trial competitions. Quigley Catholic competes against schools with much larger student enrollment and has defeated them all this year.
To get a chance at the State Championship, the team had to compete against 11 other Beaver County schools to move onto Regional competition. In the County finals, QCHS defeated Blackhawk HS in the semis and then Beaver HS in the finals. They then moved on to Regionals and defeated Butler HS in the semi-finals and then Warrren HS allowing them to move on to States.
There were 311 teams in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania all vying for the spot of State Champion. They were whittled down, through regional competitions, to get to the State Mock Trial Championships in Harrisburg on March 22-23. Twelve teams ultimately made it there and competed against each other until Quigley Catholic was the last team standing. They competed twice on Friday, March 22nd and again on Saturday, March 23rd. You can watch the Mock Trial final on the PCN (Pennsylvania Cable Network) website by clicking on the designated link below.
This year's fictitious criminal case for the competition was "Commonwealth v. Tatum Zillias"
A Philadelphia real estate developer was on trial for third-degree murder and "accused of recklessly putting a crane into motion to lift two gigantic roofing panels at a construction site in the midst of a hurricane. The crane collapsed and killed two people."
The developer was racing to get a low-cost housing complex finished to earn a $25 million bonus and disregarded safety measures and conditions.
In the Finals, the QCHS team took on the burden of being the Defense. The attorneys during the finals were George Burnet (Sophmore), Kaye Burnet (Senior) and Anthony Kuntz (Junior). The witnesses were Shelby Wasil (Senior), T.J. Belsterling (Freshman) and Jarek Ingros (Senior).
This year's QCHS Mock Trial participants are:
Macy Jaskiewicz, Anna Marie Lovre, J.J. Hrechen, Jarek Ingros, Shelby Wasil, Nick Core, Kaye Burnet, Anthony Kuntz, George Burnet, T.J. Belsterling, Kate Straatmann, Emily Cronin, Austin Kuntz.
Quigley Catholic's Mock Trial team will be heading to Indianapolis to compete in the National's on May 9-11. Last year, 49 teams competed for the coveted championship. This year's case material will be loosely adapted from one of Indiana's worst tragedies that occurred 50 years ago - an explosion of propane tanks used to warm popcorn.
We wish the team safe travels and best of luck at Nationals! Our prayers will be with you.

Quigley Catholic's Pa. Junior Academy of Science participants go 10 for 10!

Mrs. Bonislawsky and PJAS participants
|
You would think in the 30 years that Mrs. Bonislawsky has been sponsoring Quigley Catholic students for the PJAS competition, she would have seen it all. But she witnessed something this year that was a
"FIRST." On Saturday, February 23, ten of Quigley Catholic's students competed at Slippery Rock University in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Competition. ALL TEN of our students (Andy Broniszewski, Hannah Broniszewski, Emily Chinchilla, Emily Cronin, Macy Jaskiewicz, Megan Matuszak, Anna Majewski, Jackie Miller, Zoe Miller, and Bailey Tyler) received First place ratings and will move on to compete at the State competition at Penn State University on May 12-14. This is the first time in school history that every participant has moved on to the state competition.
Also, earning special awards were Megan Matuszak (perfect score of 5.0 and Physics Award), Bailey Tyler (perfect score of 5.0 and Senior High Chemistry Award), and Hannah Broniszewski (Senior High Microbiology Award and Slippery Rock University Biology Department Honorary Award).
We wish our PJAS students safe travel and the best of luck when they attend the state competition.

Quigley Catholic students take the audience...
From the era that brought the world The Rubik's Cube, Max Headroom and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comes this "Totally Awesome" musical in the style of movies such as Back To The Future, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Karate Kid and The Wedding Singer.
Join the graduating class of William Ocean High School as they live through their final senior year - as they experience the fun, the heartbreak, the loves and the loneliness of growing up.... all set to the biggest hits of the 80's!!
Performances from April 18th thru April 20th, in front of capacity crowds, 74 students of Quigley Catholic High School presented their audiences a chance to remember times, not so long ago, where neon was cool, glasses the size of frisbees were in and big hair ruled. The ensemble took us back in time by performing tunes from the 80's while telling us the story of, a now older, Corey Palmer.
 |
Corey Palmer (John Paul Lisella) with other cast members
|
Set in the USA, Back To The 80's told the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School that graduated in the 1980's, as remembered and seen through the eyes of Corey Palmer, played by John Paul Lisella, who is now 30-something.
The then 17-year-old Corey, played by, Jacob Farkas, is madly in love with his next-door neighbour, Tiffany Houston, played by Marissa Peltz, one of the coolest girls in the school. However, she barely notices this, as she is too busy mooning over Michael Feldman, played by Matt Scolieri, the hottest guy around. Michael and his friends are athletic and good-looking - the kind of guys that Corey and his two best friends dream of being. However, while they may not be the coolest guys in school, they are still one up on Feargal McFerrin III, played by Anthony Kuntz, whose best friend is his computer, and who believes the crazy notion that one day CD's will replace cassette tapes.
 |
Mel and Kim Easton (Caitlan Carney and Claire Allman) with Tiffany Houston (Marissa Peltz, center)
|
The year commences with Class President Elections: Michael steals Corey's election speech, and when he uses his ideas and promises the girls a kiss for a vote, he becomes President, with Tiffany as his Vice-President. Corey is left looking on despairingly.
 |
The Prom
|
During the year, several new students arrive at the school - Mel and Kim Easton, played by Claire Allman and Caitlan Carney, (the all-singing, all-dancing twin cheerleaders) and Eileen
Reagan
played by Johanna Lord, whose life becomes a nightmare when Michael and his gang start to send her fake love letters.
Will Eileen ever make new friends at William Ocean High School? She did!
Will Tiffany ever see the evil side of Michael? She did!
Meanwhile the teachers are having issues of their own. Mr Cocker, played by JJ Hrechun, after being in a relationship for two years with the apparently conservative English teacher, Miss Sheena Brannigan, played by Kaye Burnet, confiscates an old edition of a swimsuit magazine from a student, only to discover that his girlfriend is the centerfold.
 |
Young Corey Palmer (Jacob Farkas) amd Tiffany Houston (Marissa Peltz
|
How will he cope? It takes awhile, but he does.
Will their relationship be able to survive this hurdle? Yes!
Throw in a
dream sequence, high-energy dance routines, the obligatory 80's party scene, copious amounts of blue eye-shadow, twenty cans of hairspray, as well as some of the most popular songs ever written, and the result was a musical that not only delighted and amused an audience of any age, but will also inspire any young cast.
Will Corey finally get the girl of his dreams?
At least he does for one night!.
Will the Prom night be a success? It was!
 |
Michael Feldman (Matt Scolieri) and Huey Jackson (Xavier Myron)
|
Will Feargal McFerrin III ever get a date? Yes!
For all those that attended this year's musical, it was a time to remember and laugh, while asking, "Did we really dress like that?" or "How did I make my hair do that?" For others, we just wished we had our hair back.
If any of you have been a part of the musical in the past, you know how much time, dedication and effort it takes to pull it all together in time for the raising of the curtain. It is amazing that a school of Quigley Catholic's size has so much talent year in and year out. They do not rely on elaborate sets to make the show special, they rely on their talents and personalities to entertain those in attendance and each other. The musical is one of the highlights of each year and it never fails to show what a special group of kids, parents and directors that we have at the school. On behalf of the audience, we would like to thank the entertainers, the crew, the parents that always work so hard behind the scenes and of course, the directors, Marta Zak and Laura Yeorg.

CLASS of 1983
1983 Senior Trip - Orlando, FL
|
The Class of 1983 has been busy planning their 30 year reunion to be held this summer. Plans are as follows:
DATE: Friday, August 9, 2013 PLACE: Gateway Clipper Fleet - Our own ship for the evening TIME: 7:00 p.m. Registration, 7:30 p.m. Set Sail COST: $80 per person and includes: The Pittsburgh Buffet - Polish, Italian, and Pittsburgh themed stations Host Bar - Includes all the beer, wine, pop, coffee and tea you can consume Each attendee will receive a commemorative photo (individual/group) upon docking
All checks are to be payable and sent to:
Mary Jo Reda,
906 Lexington Drive
Aliquippa, PA 15001
In addition, as part of their milestone celebration, the Class of 1983 is extending an invitation to members of the graduating classes of 1980 through 1986 to attend their reunion. The reasoning behind this decision is due to the fact that Quigley was a close knit community and many members of the class of 1983 had friends in other classes. Some classmates have even married other alumni. Also, many of the other classes have not had the opportunity to hold a reunion so this would be a way for them to come together and renew old friendships.
Since complete contact information is not available for all the alumni we are asking everyone to help spread the word on all the details to those who may have an interest in participating. Let's make it a night we will always remember, with classmates we will never forget!
Please direct all questions to either MaryJo (Sylvester) Reda at 412-716-3205 email maryjo0608@gmail.com or Donna (Wilson) Cheswick at 724-493-9695 email donnachez102@comcast.net

Alumni Spotlight
"Viva il Papa"
An Experience of a Lifetime
Cara Koshut
QCHS 2011
Ciao!
I'm Cara Koshut, a graduate of Quigley Catholic's Class of 2011. I am in a five-year masters program at Duquesne University for Speech-Language Pathology. This semester I have chosen to study abroad at Duquesne's Italian campus in Rome, which happened to be the most wonderful, historic time for the Catholic church.
Upon arriving in Italy the first of February, we were informed that every Sunday and Wednesday Pope Benedict performs a blessing for the general public from his apartment window in St. Peter's Square. Realizing my birthday, February 10th, fell on a Sunday, I immediately knew how I would be spending my birthday. On that day, my two friends and I departed campus making our way to Ottaviano, the metro stop for the Vatican. We purchased rosaries and religious items before arriving at St. Peter's to get blessed by Pope Benedict. The blessing started promptly at noon, and the Pope appeared from the second window on the right in a building of St. Peter's. People started cheering and clapping with sheer delight of seeing him. The blessing was said in multiple languages, making everyone feel very much apart of it all. Lasting about 20 minutes, I still felt so grateful to be in the presence of our Holy Father. Not many can say the Pope blessed them on their 20th birthday!
The following day I heard the stunning news of the Pope resigning, which hasn't happened in 600 years! I was shocked, as was the rest of the world, but knew his decision was made with the grace of God. Italians showed a vast arrange of emotions, making it very interesting to be here in Italy during the transitional phase. There were several unknowns, like when conclave would begin or who the next Holy Father could be. We did know that Pope Benedict was resigning February 28th, and there was a Papal Audience being held in St. Peter's Square for the general public Wednesday, February 27th. My professor for Intercultural Communications obtained tickets for our class to attend since it was during our normal class time. There was a huge crowd, as to be expected, but we were able to get seats because we had tickets. Pope Benedict spoke in 10 different languages, and it really was a beautiful, and certainly an intercultural, experience!
Many of us were concerned that we would miss the conclave because we were leaving for spring break March 14. God must have heard our prayers, because conclave started unexpectedly early! On March 12, black smoke came out, announcing there was no decision made on the new Pope. People began to make bets as to when it would be. Some said Thursday, I said Friday, and many said Saturday. The next day, people who did not have class went to St. Peter's Square from 10 to 1 and again from 3 to 6. On Wednesday, people were going to St. Peter's after class because it ended early at 5.
I decided to go for a little for the experience, but I had a huge midterm the next day and did not want to stay long. After about an hour, my friend, Kayla, and I decided to leave because our final was very early the following morning and we needed to study. This was such a hard decision, I would obviously want to be there more than anything, but I am here for school and I couldn't forget that.
Once back to campus, we went to our rooms to gather our things to study. As I was heading to my room, I passed Alexa who was checking twitter to see if anything happened. She looked down at her iPad and yelled "WHITE SMOKE!!!"
At that moment I felt such a mix of emotions, regret for leaving, nervousness if I would make it back or not, and happiness that we had a new Papa. Immediately Kayla, Alexa, and I ran out the door and started sprinting. We ran about a mile and a half, meanwhile I was getting calls and texts from everyone and their brother expressing their excitement. Running on adrenaline, I couldn't stop even if I tried. It was not an option getting to St. Peter's in time. We hopped on a bus and I had my dad update us from the states as to what was happening on that special balcony in Vatican City. It seemed like we were okay, but we had to get off the bus and run the rest of the way. The traffic was insane and people were flooding the streets. We jumped the metal rail in St. Peter's and walked in just as the Cardinal came out! He greeted the crowd and started with a prayer. The thousands upon thousands of people were silent, waiting and listening to every word he said. The curtains were then drawn back, and Papa Francesco emerged!! Everyone was cheering and yelling out "Papa!". People of every nationality were hugging each other and joining hands. Many began to cry and reach up toward our new Holy Father. I have never felt such an emotional pull to something. As soon as Pope Francis walked onto the balcony, my heart was so full of love.
I would never trade my memories an experiences with Pope Benedict and Pope Francis for anything in for the world. Since the day Papa Francesco emerged, I have seen him at the Stations of the Cross at the Coliseum and on Easter Sunday. To say I am lucky is an understatement. I have had the most wonderful, incredible, and unforgettable semester. As I look forward to the few weeks I have left here in Roma, I am so sad that it has come and gone so fast. I am very blessed for this opportunity and I would encourage anyone to come and visit Rome, or to study abroad. My faith in God is stronger than ever, and I have grown so much from this experience. I look forward going back to the States and carrying these moments forever in my heart. There's no place like Rome...

Who is the "Face of Quigley Catholic?" If you have driven down Route 65, on Route 19 in Wexford. near Beaver Valley Mall or many other places in the tri-county area, you would be hard pressed to miss the new Quigley Catholic billboards (as seen above) promoting the school. Along with words and a Quigley Catholic banner announcing our "Top 50" Catholic High School designation, you will also see a picture of a pretty, young lady who is now the "Face of Quigley Catholic."
We thought it would be nice to introduce her to you and ask her some questions about Quigley Catholic and herself.
Her name is Zoe Miller. Her parents are Grant and Annalyn Miller. She has one brother named Dillon. He graduated Quigley in 2012 and is currently a freshman at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!). She lives in Beaver, PA, and attended St. John the Baptist in Monaca for grade school. At St. Johns, she made it into the National Honors Society, received a first place in PJAS at the State competition, made All-stars for Soccer, competed in the Quigley Classic for Basketball, and ranked in the top 25 at the Catholic school's Cross Country championship. So far at Quigley, she has made High honors, received a first place at the PJAS regional competition (going to states in May), she was in this year's musical, and made it into the 90 minute club for Soccer.
We provided her with a list of questions which she graciously agreed to answer.
Q. Did you know when they were doing the photo shoot that you were going to be the "The Face of Quigley Catholic." If not, how surprised were you to find out that you would be on area billboards and featured in other parts of the campaign?
A. During the photo shoot, I did not know I was going to be "The Face of Quigley". I heard before the shoot that I might be on a billboard, but that it wasn't certain yet. I was really surprised when I saw the billboards. At first, I thought there would be multiple people on the billboard because other people got pictures taken the same day. When I saw it was just me though, it was so surreal and I just couldn't believe it.
Q. What is it like to be driving down the highway and see yourself, larger than life, on a billboard?
A. It's absolutely crazy seeing myself on the billboard! It is also really strange because it doesn't feel like it's me, but it's still really cool!
Q. While I am sure your family, friends and school mates have noticed you on the billboards, has anyone out of the blue recognized you? A. Yes, there was actually one person who recognized me. I was at a Confirmation retreat sometime in January, and was in line for lunch. One of the men who were running the retreat was standing near me and at one point turned and asked "Do you go to Quigley?" I was pretty confused since I was not wearing a Quigley sweatshirt, shirt nor sweatpants, but I nodded yes. He said, "I recognized you from the billboard on 65. I drive by it everyday!" I laughed and was completely shocked that he knew who I was. No one else out of the blue has recognized me, but a lot of friends I haven't seen for years, and people I have only met once or twice have recognized me.
Q. Can you tell us why you and your family chose Quigley Catholic to continue your education?
A. We chose Quigley for several reasons. My dad coaches boy's Soccer here and has done so for many years and so I was familiar with the school (I have attended soccer games here since I was 1 year old!), and my brother went to Quigley.
Q. As your Freshman year is nearing its completion, can you tell us how you think your first year has gone?
A. So far, I think my Freshman year has gone really well. I got Highest honors this report period. I am on the Softball and Soccer teams, and I've met and become friends with a lot more people.
Q. Is there any experience/moment that has stood out for you during your Freshman year?
A. During my Freshman year the experience that stands out for me is the Soccer season because it was such fun and was an amazing experience. The team bonded so much this year and I've had so many great experiences with them.
Q. What are your interests when you aren't in school? A. Outside of Quigley, I am on my township's travel Soccer team. If you have not figured it out yet, I love Soccer and have been playing it since I was little. I have also participated in Karate since I was very young. My father owns a Karate school and both he and his brother are black belts and we have competed in over 100 Karate tournaments. I have been a National Champion for two years in a row and I get to travel to Indianapolis, IN. every year to compete in the big international tournament there. I love Soccer and Karate because I have met so many great people through it, and it helps me keep in shape, and teaches me discipline.
Q. What extracurricular activities do you participate in at Quigley Catholic?
A. At Quigley, along with the sports I play, I am also involved with the musical, PJAS, and Forensics. The musical is so much fun and since I saw the previous years' musicals (my brother was in them), I had to join. I have participated in PJAS for several years at my grade school and wanted to continue with it this year. It's really fun because if you make it to the state competition, you get to spend a few days at Penn State University Main campus. I did Forensics this year because honestly, I thought I could get bonus points from Mr. Wax. As I competed though, it was really neat and different from the other things I have done before, and it was cool to see all the kids who get really into it.
Q. What has been your favorite thing about attending school at Quigley Catholic?
A. My favorite thing about Quigley is getting to know everyone. I really like how at Quigley, everyone knows everyone, even the teachers, and it feels like a big family.
Q. I know you are only a Freshman, but do you have any ideas what your plans after Quigley Catholic might be?
A. So far my plans for after Quigley would be just to get into a good college. I'm thinking of studying something in the medical field, but I am not sure yet and that could all change in three years.
Q. Do you have any amusing or just good stories from your first year at Quigley?
A. Some good stories would probably be just all the fun moments from Soccer and Softball, doing the musical, not being able to unlock my locker, and Mr. Wax's random stories. I've had so many great times at Quigley and with my friends, I can not wait to see what the next three years brings me.
The newsletter staff would like to thank Zoe and her family for allowing us to do this Q&A with her. She took the time out of her busy schedule to do the Q&A. It is a very busy time of year at Quigley Catholic with the musical just concluding and spring sports along with the ever present school work. Zoe is a great representative of the school as are all of it's students. Now, when you see the billboard, you can say, "Hey, I know that girl!"

Sarah Waychoff shows support for our Armed Forces
and a cause close to her heart.
In January 2013, Sarah Waychoff, a Junior at Quigley Catholic High School, coordinated a collection of food and supplies for an Army Special Forces Unit currently deployed in Afghanistan.
Sarah's 27 year old cousin Casey is one of 12 Sergeants in the Unit that the supplies were collected for. In a recent email message, Casey expressed his Units gratitude for the expression of kindness. He said they were quite surprised when 6 extremely large boxes arrived one day all

from the same return address. They greatly appreciated the supplies and asked for continued prayers.
When her cousin was first deployed, Sarah wanted to find a way to show her support and sent a request for specific food items to the students and families at Quigley Catholic. She had no idea how generous everyone would be. In addition to collecting money to help offset the total cost of the shipping, she received over 150 pounds of a variety of food and snack items, magazines and DVD movies. In each box she included a note explaining how the families at Quigley Catholic wanted to show their support and that the items were gathered with love and appreciation for all they are doing for us.
In addition to supporting our troops, Sarah is also currently involved with a book drive at Children's Hospital, "Grace's Gift of Words." Sarah's Goddaughter, Grace, was born March 2012 with a congenital disease, CMV (Cytomegalovirus), and as part of raising awareness for CMV and to help collect and distribute books for children and siblings who are at Children's Hospital, a project has been set up in Grace's name.
 |
Sarah and Grace
|
The purpose of "Grace's Gift of Words" is to collect new and gently used books for the outpatient floor at Children's Hospital. Children like Grace, who spend 2-3 days a week receiving treatments and undergoing testing at Children's, are able to enjoy books while they wait. The books are also available for their siblings who spend countless hours at the hospital. The book drive is on going and Sarah is donating her time helping to organize and label the books and deliver and distribute the books at the hospital. To learn more about "Grace's Gift of Words" you can visit www.thesweetersideofmommyhood.com and click on "Grace's Story."
Sarah will also be spending her week long Senior Service week at Children's Hospital, donating her time to the needs of families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

Change is the Name of the Game
Olivia Fyda
QCHS 2015
The Quigley softball team has found a way to use their changing coaching staff to their advantage. Over the past three years, the Lady Spartans have had three different Head Coaches. The girls have found a way to take away different skills and lessons from each coach. In 2011, the Head Coach was Anthony Palumbo. In 2012, Shelly Koman. The current coach of the Lady Spartans is Dan Patsch, assisted by Diana Farkas. Coaches Patsch and Farkas have a plan to change the attitude surrounding the Quigley Softball program. When other schools think of Quigley athletics, they often think of Basketball and Soccer. These teams consistently make the playoffs. Coach Patsch told the girls that he wants people to also think of the Softball team. He wants the girls to make a name for themselves; and that is exactly what they plan on doing.
The Lady Spartans are a major team, with 5 of their 9 starters being Seniors. These Seniors have a big role on the team from helping out with drills, to teaching the less experience players the fundamentals. Three of the Spartans' four pitchers are Seniors. Jackie Miller contributes to the team with her pitching. Nautaya Jackson and Molly Patsch have also grown over the years to help the team in pitching.
The Varsity Outfielders are Nautaya Jackson, Claire Allman, and Julia Yaccich. Sophomore Jaylen Young starts as Catcher, and Jackie Miller as Pitcher. Senior Shayla Dzuro starts at Third and Molly Patsch starts at Shortstop. Junior Chandler Teny starts at Second base while Sophomore Olivia Fyda starts at First base. It's too early in the season to know how the Lady Spartans are going to do. Although they lost their first three games of the season, the Ladies do not believe those games are a reflection of the season to come. Their next game was a 16-1 win for the Ladies. They know what they have to do to win the game and plan on doing it. Good Luck to the Lady Spartans for a successful season.
As of this newsletter, the team currently sits at 4-8 overall and 3-8 in section play. This has them in 7th place in the section. The Lady Spartans consist of 5 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 4 Sophomores and 5 Freshmen.

Lady Spartan Basketball Update
Morgan Dillon
QCHS 2013
The Quigley Catholic girls' Basketball team had a great season this year and qualified for the WPIAL playoffs as a four seed. In the first round of the playoffs, the Lady Spartans were scheduled to play against California High School. The girls were nervous about this game because they had lost in the first round of the playoffs the last two seasons and did not want to succumb again to what had become "the Quigley Curse." In the end, this just served to motivate them, and the curse was broken with Quigley winning 81-38. The Lady Spartans then moved on to the second round of the playoffs to face St. Joseph. After a strong start by Quigley, St. Joseph could not recover, and the Lady Spartans won 60-31. Quigley next faced number-one-seeded Vincentian Academy in the semi-final round. A lot was on the line for both teams as the winner of this game was to play in the Championship at Duquesne's A.J. Palumbo Center. Quigley struggled and eventually lost 57-38, sadly ending their run in the WPIAL playoffs.
Although the Lady Spartans lost to Vincentian, they qualified for the Pennsylvania State Playoffs. Quigley played in the first round of the PIAA Playoffs at Pitt-Johnstown against Conemaugh Township. The game was very close; Quigley and Conemaugh Township battled it out until the very end. The score was within two points with one minute left on the clock, but in the end, the Lady Spartans lost, 49-44, knocking them out of the PIAA playoffs and ending their season.
The Lady Spartans accomplished much this season and enjoyed playing with one another. They won their section with an undefeated record of 12-0 for the second year in a row and did well in the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs. Next season, seniors Morgan Dillon, Molly Patsch, and Amber Powell will be missed, but the remaining Lady Spartans will continue their tradition of success.

Spartan Basketball Update
Jay Fyda
QCHS 2013
This year's Quigley Catholic Spartans were well represented at the WPIAL's basketball All-Star game. Nate Lieb and Jay Fyda were both selected to play in the annual Roundball All-Star Classic. The committee selects participants for the game from a list of the 1st team All-section Seniors in area. Quigley Catholic is one of only three schools in the entire WPIAL to send multiple players to this year's game.
The Roundball Classic features two boys and two girls games. The Single A teams play the Double A teams and the Triple A teams play the Quad A teams. In the game that Jay Fyda and Nate Lieb participated in, the Single A All-Stars defeated the Double A All-Stars by a score of 141-94. Jay contributed 2 points and Nate added 10 to the teams winning effort.
Festivities for the All-Stars included team scrimmages on April 17th, a Recognition Dinner at the Pittsburgh Marriot North on April 18th and the Classic games on April 20th at Geneva College's Metheny Fieldhouse.
Congratulations to both Jay and Nate!

Mr. McLane
2013

 |
Mr. McLane
1983
|
Mr. Robert McLane
Math and Science
Q. Could you give me some background about yourself?
A. I grew up on Pittsburgh's North Side. I am the son of the late James S. McLane Sr. and the late Rita Callahan McLane. I had a brother, the late James S. McLane Jr.
I attended Annunciation Catholic Grade School from 1954 to 1962 and was greatly influenced by the Sisters of Saint Joseph. I attended North Catholic High School and graduated in 1966. At the time it was an all boys high school, and the faculty was made up of all male teachers, a majority of which were Marianist Brothers. Discipline was the core of the curriculum in those days.
I attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree. Words cannot begin to describe the experience of attending this outstanding institution. I later received a Masters of Arts in Teach from Duquesne University in 1973.
I've been married to my lovely wife , Janet, for 38 years. We have four outstanding children. Ryan (36 years old) who is a Junior High School Principal in Ohio, Brendan (34 years old) is an Nuclear Engineer for the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C., Darren (32 years old) who is a Pharmacist in Pittsburgh, and our daughter Shannon (30 years old) who is a Medical Technician and Consultant for a heart monitoring equipment company. My wife and I are the proud grandparents of four adorable granddaughters. They are Kaydence, Molly, Macie and Maura. Their ages are 9, 8 , 4 and 2 respectively. We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a grandson in June.
Q. Would you tell use how you came into teaching at Quigley Catholic?
A. In late August of 1971 I had an Industrial Engineering job pending with Crucible Steel Company. Due to a labor conflict with their employees, the company could not hire me until it was settled. So I was relaxing and biding my time. On a Thursday evening in late August I get a call from Mr.George Sprys, who was one of my teachers in high school. We attended the same church and he lived in my neighborhood. He knew I was not working and told me of Quigley Catholic High School needing a short term Math and Science teacher. The headmaster had just been appointed and had not found a permanent instructor to meet his needs. Mr.Sprys was a friend and past colleague of the headmaster, and he told him of my background. Mr. Sprys suggested that I interview for the opening, and I politely told him that I was not interested. He then told me that I should get interested because he had told the headmaster that I would be there for an interview Friday afternoon. The interview went well, and I made it clear that I would only be available until my engineering job materialized. I figured that there was no way they would offer me a job with that stipulation. That night I get a call informing me that the job was mine for the taking along with the J.V. Basketball coaching position. The following Tuesday was the first day of my 42 year teaching career. The rest is history. I fell in love with teaching and lost my aspiration of being an Engineer. I enrolled at Duquesne University where I attended night school and summer school in order to obtain permanent state certification to teach. Because of the engineering curriculum I had gone through, in a little over a year I became certified to teach Mathematics, Physics and General Science.
Q. What has been your favorite subject to teach and why?
A. I guess I would have to say Honors Physics. It allows me to show students why things happen the way they happen in the world around us. It is a unique subject in that it enables you to use mathematics to explain and model physical phenomenon
Q. You have had many students pass through your classroom, but in your career at Quigley Catholic, is there one student or a few that have stood out in your memory. If so, can you tell us who and why?
A. Every student is special in their own unique way, and I remember students for various reasons. One person who I will never forget is Joe George. I taught him all four years, coached him in Basketball for four years and was the moderator of Student Council of which he was a member. He and Ed Jennings were Co-Presidents their senior year 1974-1975. I told him I was going to claim him as a dependent on my tax return.
Another student that will always be a fond memory is Darryl Jones. He was the forerunner of Urkel of "Family Matters". Both as a student and as a Basketball player I took him under my wing. He wasn't the best of either, but I demanded that he give me "his best". Darryl has developed into a strong and courageous man. He is presently the Chief of the Pittsburgh Fire Department. I am proud to think that I was a positive influence on his life. He has told me that if not for attending Q.C.H.S. he would not be in the position he is in today.
Q. In the academic awards ceremony that the school has every year, you give an award to a specific student. Can you tell us how this tradition came about, and what criteria you use when choosing the recipient each year?
A. I refer to it as the "Golden Award", because it is an appropriate object painted gold and made into a necklace. It is presented to a student who does something that is never to be forgotten. The first one was presented in 1989 to Nicole Liberati, an outstanding student, athlete and all round great person. Her award was a "Golden Tuning Fork" and here is why. Each student was given a tuning fork and told to strike it against the heel of their hand and listen to the pitch of the sound it produced. Nicole said that she heard nothing so I asked her to do it again as I watched. She struck the fork on the heel of her hand and I watched as she put her hand up to her ear instead of the tuning fork.
Then there were Bobbi Jo Shaffer, Leanne Bloor and Maren McBride. They were in my Physic class, and they seemed to complain quite a bit so I dubbed them "The Vineyard" because of all of their whining. I spray painted bunches of plastic grapes and made necklaces for them. There were others but these two are the most memorable.
Q. My kids came home and told us that you were once Quigley Catholic's Basketball coach. Can you tell us what years you coached and how was that experience? Who is the best player that you coached?
A. I was the Junior Varsity Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach from 1971 to 1976. I enjoyed the experience immensely. I have always loved this sport so that made it fun. I was young at the time, so I actually participated with the team during practice. The 1974 team was probably the most talented one with which I was associated. Rich Olexovich, Drew Stauffer, Danny Lyles, Glen Calabria and Kevin Kaladonis were all fine players.
Q. If you weren't a teacher, what would you like to be.
A. A successful businessman and owner of some type of small company.
Q. What do you do for fun when you aren't teaching and during the summer.
A. I enjoy watching sporting events and getting together with old friends to reminisce. I also enjoy getting together with family for holidays and birthdays. Most of my summers over the years were spent working. I worked at Pepsi's bottling facility as a summer employee when they we still in operation years ago. And up until about three years ago I worked for three different home contractors during the summers.
Q. Your sense of humor is notorious. Do you use this to help get through to your students or do you use it to get through the day with your sanity?
A. I have always thought that a teacher must be looked at as a performer with his class as the audience. The best way to keep the attention of your audience is to know your stuff and keep them interested. I have always possessed a good sense of humor and gift of being quick witted. Since I can't sing and dance very well I guess being a comedian was my best alternative as a performer. If the kids in your class are smiling they are paying attention to you and that makes it easier to teach them.
Q. If there was one piece of advise you could pass on to your students each year, what would that be?
A. Love, learn and smile. Be nice to people and they will be nice to you. Love and you will be loved. If you don't learn something every day you should stay in bed. Work at whatever you do to the best of your abilities and you will be successful. You will never accomplish things if you don't try. Laugh because laughter is the best medicine for most things. And if you don't have something nice to say then keep quiet.
Q. You have been teaching at Quigley Catholic for awhile. Can you tell us what the school and your experiences teaching at the school means to you.
A. I have spent 42 years at Quigley Catholic, and I have truly loved the experience. Teaching has been fun and a very rewarding occupation. I have worked for and with very fine people, and have made many life long friendships. I have been fortunate to meet many fine parents, and I would like to thank them for entrusting me with the education and personal growth of their children. The most rewarding experience about teaching is the daily interaction with the students. They keep me young and they make me feel appreciated. They are truly the reasons for the love and the joy that I have had as a teacher. My wish for each student I encounter is to have them reach their fullest potential academically, socially and spiritually. I have felt great joy and satisfaction over the years seeing the successes and achievements of students that I have taught. I only hope that I was a contributing factor to their success. When people ask me why I have taught so long tell them I have thousands of reasons, but at the moment I can't recall all of their names.
We would like to thank Mr. McLane for taking time out of his bust schedule to do this Q&A for us. He is definitely a "Treasure" of QCHS and we thank him for the many years he has given to the school.

The Art of the Ask:
Prom date proposals get creative
The days of meeting your potential prom date in the hall or calling that special someone on the phone and asking, in a cracked voice, "Um...er...mmm, would you like to, umm...you know...go to the prom with me?" is now considered passe. Now, the inviter needs is expected to be creative and in many cases find an accomplice or accomplices in order to pull off the "Art of the Ask."
This year at Quigley Catholic was no different than other schools across the country where the inviter tries to make it impossible to say "NO." Quigley Catholic had it's share of creative invites. This year, QCHS has seen a grandiose display, a scavenger hunt, role playing and, as you would expect, the use of modern electronics to invite the person they wish to spend the evening with. So we thought it would be fun to tell you about four such invites that took place this year. We will only use first names to protect the innocent and maybe save some embarrassment.
 |
Andy and Jackie
|
The first one that got the Prom asking going this year was the most grandiose and was the brain child of Andy. Andy wanted to make the "Ask" made known to all of the Quigley Catholic students and also wanted to make sure the target of his invitation would not miss his request. What did he do you ask? Well, he decided to line the driveway entrance to the school, (You know, where everyone has to drive by to get there) with individual signs. Each one had a specific and simple word on it. As you drove down the driveway the signs went as followed:
Jackie...will...you...go...to...the...Prom...with...me...Andy!
This was a gesture that no one could miss, especially the one that it was intended for. Well, that is unless they weren't coming to school that day. Here it seems that some of the kids knew that Jackie wasn't suppose to be at school that day and they were feeling bad for Andy and his gesture. Although Jackie was later than usual, she did come to school that day and saw here "Ask." So was this a successful "Ask?" Yes it was. We hope their Prom night together was as memorable as the invitation.
 |
Jarek and Tori
|
The next "Ask" we will chronicle was more of a game. It was designed as a scavenger hunt. This time the person who was doing the asking was Jarek. Jarek's intended target was Tori. Jarek hid a series of five notes with clues as to where to find the next note. The first four had the letters P,R,O,M in a random order. The fifth note was on Tori's windshield with a few roses. The note asked Tori to unscramble the letters and add a question mark. Jarek had a school mate give Tori the first note, the second one was under her seat in Physics class, the third was taped to the back of the statue of Joseph, the fourth was under a bunch of monster cans in her locker and the last was on her car... and it actually worked. Jarek's ingenuity and thoughfulness paid off as he received the "YES" answer from Tori.
 |
Matt and Adehl
|
The next "Ask" we will cover is a bit different than the others. This one was between a boyfriend and a girlfriend. Now, you would think that if you are already a couple, there is no "Ask" required. While that may be true in some cases. it is better to be safe than sorry. This time was a much more subtle, yet impressive approach. Matt and Adehl have been dating for a few months and it was assumed they would be going to the Prom together. But, Matt was taking no chances. You see Matt had a leading role, Michael Feldman, in this year's musical and practice for the play had already been going on for awhile. So as any good actor wants to do, he needed to work on his lines. One evening when Adehl was at Matt's house, he asked Adehl if she would help him read his lines for the musical. Of course, being the nice girlfriend, she obliged. Well, you see, Matt threw a little curve ball into the mix by re-typing the script to make it look identical to the original. If you saw the musical, you know that Michael Feldman asked Tiffany Houston to the William Ocean High School Prom. Well, in Matt's version of the script, he changed the wording so that it was him asking Adehl to the Quigley Catholic Prom. Of course, we know the script had Tiffany saying yes, but what would Adehl say? Well the answer is a big "YES!"

The final "Ask" we will look at is the one based on technology. No, it wasn't a simple text that teenagers are so fond of using. This one took a little ingenuity and the help of a friend. In this "Ask" we have Kevin using technology to his advantage. You see Kevin had his mind made
 |
Kevin and Caitlan
|
up to ask Caitlan to the Prom this year. His idea was to spell out the invite on his iPhone using various app icons. We are not sure how long it took him to find all of the right icons to spell out what he wanted, but once he found all the right icons, his "Ask" was no where near complete. See it would be easy if you could just send someone your screen shot and have it appear on their screen, but as far as I know, that isn't possible. So he did the next best thing. He printed out his screen shot of the icons along with a picture of he and Caitlan at this year's Semi-Formal in the background. Now the dilemma was, how do I get Caitlan to see it? He decided he needed to get the paper copy of the screen shot on to Caitlan's phone so that when she looked at it next she would see her invitation. Well, what are best friends for, especially when it is Caitlan's BFF. Well, the BFF was asked to find a way to get this onto Caitlan's phone and getting her look at it. With a little stealthy sneaking around and then getting the screen shot onto the phone, the plan was coming together. After a little prodding, Caitlan finally had the "Ask" in front of her. You can see the screen shot above This "Ask" also ended in the response that Kevin hoped for. It was a big "YES!"
So, as you can see, there are different ways to perform the "Art of the Ask" and they can all be successful with a lot of thought, planning and proper execution. It is hoped that these 4 couples and all of those that attended this year's Prom had a great and memorable time!

Prom Blasts from the Pasts
In honor of Prom season we put out a request to the Quigley Catholic faculty and alumni for any Prom pictures or stories they may have. While we did not get many takers, we did receive a few good ones.
 |
Martha Hredzak escorted by Terry Onderik
|
This Quigley High School Prom picture and program came to us from Terry Onderik, Class of 1971. The Prom was held on May 14, 1971. Prom - O'Connell Auditorium (euphemism for the QCHS gym!) Post Prom - Horizon Room (Old Greater Pittsburgh Airport when Pterodactyls still landed) Prom Picnic (North Park, Terry thinks)
Below is a story we received a story from John Bates, Class of 1973.
Concerning a funny story about the Prom (although it wasn't that funny then) was back in 1973. I was a Senior and I asked Lorraine Ludrico to be my date, she was a Junior ('74). It seems as though, in order to "look good", Lorraine over did it in the tanning bed and got a terrible burn. When I picked her up and she opened the door, she was burnt to a crisp, as shinny as a new penny, covered with burn ointment !!! I don't have to tell you we didn't dance to close that night. As it turned out, she was still the prettiest girl at the prom !!! Then you can always count on the young ones to be quick to show us just how young they still look. One of Quigley Catholic's very own faculty, Mrs. Adrianne Kaminsky, submitted her picture that you can see here on the right. Adrianne is one of the school's Spanish teachers and also an Admissions Director. The year was 2001 and her date was Tommy...can you guess his last name? Well if you said Kaminsky, you are correct. Yes, Adrianne not only went with the Prom King that year, she also went with her future husband. Just in case you are wondering, Adrianne's maiden name is Scarsella.
We did receive another Prom picture from Mr. McLane, but it wasn't one of him at his Prom. It was from the Quigley Catholic Prom of 2000. In this picture you can see Mr. McLane bracketed by Andy Quinn, Doug Mickel and James Taylor. If we didn't know better, you'd think Mr. McLane was one of the students in this picture. That year's prom was held at Crewser's which used to be in the Strip District and the theme for the evening was "Moonlight on the Water." Many thanks to Mr. McLane for sending us this picture.
Seeing we didn't get an overwhelming response for Prom pictures, we decided to a little bit of digging through the 1973 and 1983 yearbooks. You know, the classes that will be having reunions this year. So here are a few pictures to bring back some memories.
The picture on the right is from the crowning of the King and Queen during the 1973 Junior-Senior Prom. The theme for that evening was "On the Threshold of a Dream." The Prom Queen pictured here was Esther Pellegrini and the King was Anthony Branchetti.
These two Prom goers are unknown to us at this time. The picture had no caption in the yearbook, but we thought is was fun to see the fashion of the early '70's. We do have to wonder just what the color of the tuxedo jacket was. I am making an educated guess that is was powder blue.
Our last picture is from the 1983 Prom. The theme for their evening was "On the Wings of Love."
The Prom was held on May 20, 1983 at the Airport Holiday Inn.
The Prom Court featured, left to right, Rob Fitzgerald (Prince), Vicki Esoldo (Princess), Lisa DeSalle (Queen) and Al Dinello (King).
We hope you enjoyed this blast from the past and if you have any pictures you would like to share with the newsletter, please feel free to forward them with a description and the year it was taken.

Fashion Fiesta
 |
Senior, Kevin Hein styling at the fashion show.
Kevin is the son of
Dr. Jeff Hein (Class of 85)
|
Springtime fashions flourished on the runway at the annual fashion show in early March. The Fashion Fiesta showcased QCHS students (present and future), parents, alumni and friends.... even Mr. McLean's granddaughter.... as they walked the runway donning apparel for all ages. Forty models were able to select trendy fashions and accessories from various area stores to model and share with the over 300 guests in attendance. This year's addition of formal wear for both the guys and gals added apparel for all occasions.
Guest emcee, Rick Sebak added flair to the event with his hilarious antics and Pittsburgh area trivia. While reading the scripted outline of the outfits, he personally took photos of our models ... Who knows? ... a future WQED documentary on the QCHS Fashion Show??? Sharing her vocal talents, QCHS '10 alumnus Katie Dore provided the lunchtime entertainment with her melodic show tunes that brought smiles to the crowd.
The QC-Force Fashion Show committee feverishly worked to obtain donations for the Silent Auction as well as the ticketed Chinese Auction items. Each unique collection brought excitement to the crowd as the anticipation grew to see whose ticket would be chosen or who had the winning bid.
This annual event is just one of the fundraising opportunities that QCHS schedules throughout the year. Attendance to this event and profits continue to grow. The Fashion Fiesta raised over $15,000 in just the one day.
We thank all of our sponsors, donors, volunteers and guests for making this another successful event for Quigley Catholic. Look for upcoming announcements for the date next year... And mark your calendars to join us for the trendy fashions of the day while supporting Quigley Catholic. If you are interested in becoming involved or attending the 2014 Fashion Show, please contact Anne Hein at jphein@zoominternet.net or Mike Rubino at rubino@qchs.org.

Upcoming Events
The Annual Quigley Catholic Golf Outing
Monday, May 20, 2013
The Club at Shadow Lakes
Aliquippa, PA
8-9am Registration and Continental Breakfast
9am Tee Off (shotgun start)
9am-1:30pm Scramble Format Play
1:30 pm Lunch, prizes and closing remarks
When is a golf outing, no longer just a golf outing? It is when we introduce something new called "MULLIGAN MADNESS." What is "MULLIGAN MADNESS" you ask? Well it is a way to make all of your mulligan purchases turn into one of 18 sports memorabilia prizes.
How will it work, you ask?

 New and Freshmen Parents/Guardians Reception
A reception for new and freshmen parents/guardians will be held at La Casa Narcisi Winery on the evening of September 14, 2013. The winery is located in Gibsonia, PA. The reception, 6pm - 10 pm, will feature wine tasting of Narcisi Winery's very own wines and excellent hors d'oeuvres from their kitchen.
It is hoped the evening provides the new and Freshmen parents/guardians a chance to meet and mingle, while also having a chance to talk and ask questions of some of the parents who have experience with Quigley Catholic and all that it has to offer.

2013 Quigley Catholic Tailgate
September 7, 2013
Plans are already in the works for next school years Quigley Catholic Tailgate. This event was a huge success last year and it is hoped to become even better this year. The day will feature both Girls' and Boys' soccer games, with the addition of a Girls' volleyball game. There will be plenty of food and fun as the Quigley Catholic family gathers to cheer on out teams. All are welcome and we would especially enjoy seeing QCHS alumni. This event will also see the crowning of next year's Homecoming King and Queen.
So make plans to return to your alma mater, wear some burgundy and white and catch up with old and new friends.

Quigley Catholic: A Beautiful Place
As the rush of the recruiting season has passed and another solid class of Freshmen are planning to become part of the Quigley Catholic, I started thinking to myself about why families make the choices they do for their children's education and just what Quigley Catholic has to offer.
When choosing a path for our children, we all have different criteria in what we are looking for and what we want a school to offer to our children. It is not always an easy choice to make. For some it is cost, for others it may be sports. We are all different in what we desire our children's school to be. Far be it from me to question anyone for the choices they make. We all need to do what is best for our individual families. Still, I asked myself, why someone wouldn't choose to send their child to Quigley Catholic when compared to other schools in the area. Quigley Catholic has been recognized as a "Top 50" Catholic High School for several years. Their latest SAT scores are the highest in all of the Beaver County schools and among the highest in the Diocese. The academics are as good as, and in most cases, better than any school in the area. The sports teams are competitive and the sport grounds are receiving nice reviews from the visiting teams. Last year, our graduates were offered $88,000 on average from the colleges and universities they applied to.
What is it that makes other schools, private or public, more appealing to some families? The only thing I can come up with is that Quigley Catholic's appeal is not superficial, it is the beauty that is felt once you are part of the school. By being part of the Quigley Catholic family, you can then truly understand it's true beauty. Next year's new Freshmen students and transfers, along with their families are only beginning to experience the beauty that is within the walls of Quigley Catholic.
Quigley Catholic's beauty is not "skin deep." It is much deeper than that. Some people either don't see this or chose not to see this. There are newer and shinier schools, schools with better playing fields, schools that have celebrities involved to increase their profile or school's that can offer exotic foreign languages. But, I will challenge anyone that questions just how beautiful Quigley Catholic is on a deeper level.
Some have suggested that QCHS doesn't have as many extracurricular activities as the other schools. But, I believe they aren't looking at the whole picture. First and foremost, Quigley Catholic's mission is to prepare our children for their next step into higher education and they do it very well. But, Quigley Catholic students do get involved in whatever activity that is going on at the time. Nearly half of the school was involved in this year's musical. This is the norm; not the exception. Many of the students are involved in one or more sports. What can you say about Quigley Catholic's Mock Trial team and Forensics? They take a backseat to no one. Then there is PJAS, the Q-Review newspaper, Italian Club, Art Club, Campus and Music Ministry just to name a few. On the surface it might appear there isn't much to do at Quigley Catholic, but if you dig deeper you will find plenty.
Before I go further, I feel I need to give you a quick background on myself so that you know where I am coming from. My wife and I have two wonderful children that attend Quigley Catholic at this time with one soon to be moving on to college. I became involved with the 2011 Quigley Catholic Gala Committee and then even more involved with the formation of QC-FORCE. I have remained actively involved since then. Up and to that point, I was a parent on the outside looking in. I was pleased with my daughter's education and had no complaints. I was complacent in my involvement with the school. However, once I became involved and spent time with the people who are molding our children and with other parents through the Gala and QC-FORCE, I realized just how beautiful Quigley Catholic really is. It's not the brick and mortar, the not so attractive light green roof or even the great gym that makes Quigley Catholic a beautiful place; it is what is inside of the building that makes Quigley Catholic beautiful. It is the students, the faculty, the administration, the alumni and the parents that make Quigley Catholic beautiful.
If you get to any spend time at the school, you will see smiling, bright students, faculty, administrators and on the days they are there, parents. During Basketball season, Forensic tournaments and the annual Musical, you will find people meeting in the Q-Caf to catch up and share stories. At Quigley Catholic you will find parents, faculty, administration and students giving of their time and talents to improve the school. If you look deep, you will see a group that works practically year round to put together the annual Gala. If you attend an Open House you will see smiling and personable Student Ambassadors guiding prospective families through Quigley Catholic's hallways and classrooms and hear them sharing their high school experiences with pride. You see teachers that give of their personal time so that their students can participate in Mock Trial and PJAS. Quigley Catholic's beauty is not "skin deep." In fact, if you only look "skin deep," you may not find anything out of the ordinary about the school. It is once you look deeper, look into the soul of the school, you will find what we all know is there. One of the most beautiful places we could ever be a part of.
Deep down, deeper than the eye can see, Quigley Catholic is more beautiful than one would ever guess when looking from only the outside in.
