Yoga for the Female Cycle

by Kate Marit

"Yoga is meditation in action. If you organize your practice in response to all phases of your menstrual cycle, it will provide you with power and comfort of ritual and will add stability to your life by reestablishing your link with nature's cycles. As your body takes on the forms of animals, plants, Gods, and planets, yoga becomes your meditation and your prayer." -Bobby Clennell

Supta Baddha Konasana

Menstruation teaches us that we are cyclic beings. The seasons of nature include periods of rest, which promote growth and renewal, our bodies are made up of the same stuff as the rest of nature and we follow similar patterns. By respecting these natural rhythms we keep in balance and our cycles can come and go smoothly.

During the menstruation phase of our cycle we are most sensitive physically, mentally and emotionally. It is important at the time of menstruation to use our yoga practice to align ourselves and gather energy by resting, avoiding strenuous activities, postponing turning upside down and performing demanding yoga poses. We want to avoid inversions, unsupported backbends, compressed twists, abdominal poses and poses done on the abdomen, as well as closed pelvic standing poses and balancing poses during this time of the month. Low hormone levels during menses means energy should be conserved.

IN THE MOMENT

by Doug Bauer

Classes at the Iyengar Institute in Pune India are so far removed from any Yoga class you would ever attend in the West that they actually shatter our preconceived concepts of what we believe Yoga should be. This in itself is a Yogic magnificence that can challenge a practitioner with the opportunity of observing themselves and the present moment in a new terrifyingly wonderful perspective.

Doug in front of the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India

I wish to offer up a few servings of the differences for your review......

-Do not drink the water at the Institute or you will be stuck laying around your crappy apartment running to the john for two days or more.

-The Institute is open air, which allows some of the world's finest pollution to pour in while you practice. Multitudes of cars, scooters, and auto rickshaws roar by outside jubilantly, beeping in unison often while you are in savasana. Exhaust from the millions of these vehicles, and smoke from nearby factories, are complimented daily by possibly hundreds of thousands of small fires of locals burning garbage on the street outside their homes around the city.

All this unique delight enchants our pranayama and asana practices with an unknown newness never found in western climes.

In my opinion, the large studio at the Institute would be used for a very maximum of maybe 60 students in the west. You can expect, however, 80 to 100 students side by side. Sometimes it is so packed it is necessary to practice on mats folded in half to accommodate the masses.

If you need your own space you have come to the wrong place...

baby-blocks2.jpgNEW BABIES!

Congratulations to Lynn Berndt, Evelyn Cornelissen, and Julia Suraci on the birth of their new babies.

Julia Suraci had a baby girl Natalie Bea on November 27th (6 lbs. 11oz.).

Lynn Berndt welcomed her baby girl in December.

Evelyn Cornelissen had a baby girl Lexi on March 1st. Here is her story:

Glenn and Evelyn's baby girl, Lexi, arrived just before 11 pm on Mar. 1, 2015 after a 2.5   hour labour and delivery...brought on during malasana! 7 lb, 3 oz and  healthy. Thought I might give birth in the KGH lobby but made it to a birthing
room just in time. So glad I practiced yoga before and
throughout pregnancy - I think it helped me to enjoy a drug intervention  and  complication-free delivery. Thanks to Krisna and Melissa and my Wed.
night classmates for making me feel so welcome. Big brother Coen is thrilled
to have a little sister. Looking forward to joining class again soon.
