"A Tour of Gardens" Hosted by Alexandria Garden Club A Smashing Success!
|
Swiss Chard at the home garden of Janet and Carl Ahrens
After weeks of April showers, Sunday, April 26 proved to be the perfect day for
"A Tour of Gardens" hosted by the Alexandria Garden Club. All who attended declared it to be a smashing success! This first ever event featured unique, local home gardens and one community garden that not only incorporated beautiful flora and fauna into their landscapes, but also nutritious vegetables and herbs. This intimate look at the work of creative individuals who live in this community and who know the benefits of gardening inspired many on the tour to go out and start their own gardens. The Good Food Project is honored to have been the beneficiary of the proceeds from the event. We are indebted to the Alexandria Garden Club members and to the
Tour of Gardens team who worked tirelessly to make the tour come to fruition and to those who opened their gardens for display. Many thanks to each garden club member and for the beauty they give back to our community.

Lt. Governor, Jay Dardenne and the office of Cultural Development recognized the Good Food Project on April 14, 2015 in Baton Rouge. We are honored to have been the recipient of the Culinary Arts Award in conjunction with the annual conference of Louisiana Culture Stakeholders. The Good Food Project is administered by the Food Bank of Central Louisiana in partnership with the Central Louisiana Community Foundation. The Food Bank is honored to have accepted this award on behalf of the entire Good Food Project staff, and our wonderful partners and volunteers that work tirelessly in developing and expanding the network of 32 gardens in eight parishes of Central Louisiana. Thanks to all of you for all that you do for our community. To learn more about the Good Food Project contact us at -318-445-2773 or goodfoodproject@fbcenla.org |
You are invited to join us at the GFP demonstration garden on Workday Wednesdays. In the garden, you will experience learning to grow food in a sustainable, organic way, while getting an opportunity to meet new people, and to help those in need in the community. If you, your organization, or work place would like to be involved, please give us a call. We would love to hear from you! Each Wednesday from 7:30-11:30 AM all adults and children are invited to come out for a fun day of learning and giving back to the community. Let's grow together! Learn more.
If Wednesdays aren't good for you, call us to set up another volunteer day! 318-445-2773 |

Volunteers of the Month
Alexandria Garden Club
In recognition for the work done by the Alexandria Garden Club and their event, "A Tour of Gardens," the proceeds of which benefited the Good Food Project this month, we are proud to name the club and its members as our Volunteers of the Month. The Alexandria Garden Club of Alexandria, Louisiana was organized in 1925, and then incorporated in 1927. In 1934 it was federated, and thus became a member of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. The object of the Alexandria Garden Club is to stimulate the interest, the knowledge, and the love of gardening and flower arranging. Key components also include aiding in the protection and conservation of our natural resources, and to encourage civic beauty and roadside development. The 110 members of the Alexandria Garden Club also participate in historic preservation. It has been a real pleasure to work with the club members and the Tour of Gardens Team who worked so diligently to make the tour a unique experience. We look forward to a long-term partnership with this great organization! GFP welcomes individual and organizational volunteers at our community gardens and at the Good Food Project on Wednesday mornings in the demonstration garden, 3223 Baldwin Avenue - Food Bank of Central Louisiana 71301 - 318-445-2773
