And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
Rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.

Tasty Tidbits
The internet has opened so many culinary doors for home-cooks, it's difficult to remember what life was like researching for the perfect recipe through libraries of cookbooks.
We all get into food ruts from time to time. After working all day, it's not always easy to be creative with the ingredients in the refrigerator. Now, with the click of a button, there are so many fun food lists and recipe collections. And those lovely food pictures make us want to roll up our sleeves and hit the kitchen! Anytime you're feeling out of ideas, just Google something like "food to cook in April," and you'll have instant inspiration. Here's one of those
recipe collections now! Get cooking with what's fresh at the Farmer's Market.
April is
Lawn & Garden Month, so taking a note from the previous item, how about finding garden-inspiration from the internet? There's no better place than
Pinterest for that! Click
here to scroll through lots of pictures, tips, and hacks for your vegetable garden.
We know that many of our wonderful volunteers are also
gardeners. Have you ever thought of donating some fresh produce to the kitchen? Here's an idea: plant-a-row in your garden this year specifically for Kitchen Angels. We pride ourselves on cooking and serving only the freshest fruits and vegetables to our clients, and we love when that produce is grown locally. Greens, beans, peas, peppers, carrots, cucumbers, turnips - you name it, we'll cook it! Let us know if you plan to set aside a row for Kitchen Angels, and we will bugle your name from the rooftops. You'll also receive a tax-deduction for the value of your donation.

Batsheva, our Ambassador at The Teahouse last year
|
|
We are still looking for a few volunteers for Angels Night Out- especially back-up ambassadors who can help out in a pinch. If you haven't been an ambassador before, ask any staff member and they'll fill you in. It's a fun and easy way to support Kitchen Angels by thanking diners for eating out, and telling people about the good work Kitchen Angels does. We are giving away prizes to the ambassadors who raise the most money this year, so sign up today!

Local centenarian John Stephenson, 102, founded Santa Fe Community Farm |

With advances in medicine, better prenatal care, vaccines, and a trend toward healthier lifestyles, human life-expectancy has steadily increased. In developed countries, the number of centenarians (people living to age 100 or more) doubles every 13 years! Of course the value of life is better measured with the quality of those years, not just the quantity. AARP has compiled a list of 50 Great Ways to Live Longer, all of which are based on scientific research. These suggestions not only lead to a longer life but, most likely, a happier one as well. Many happy returns!
In honor of National Humor Month, here are some cheesy food-related zingers:
- Why do we cook bacon and bake cookies?!
- The Buddha walks up to a hot dog stand and says "make me one with everything."
- The dinner I was cooking for my family was going to be a surprise, but the fire trucks ruined it.
- Any salad can be a Caesar salad if you stab it enough.
- What cheese can never be yours? Nacho cheese!
- People are a lot less judge-y when you say you ate an "avocado salad" instead of a bowl of guacamole.
- It's always a good idea to make friends with babies. That's free cake once a year for life.
- I was never a photogenic person, because when everyone said cheese, I said "WHERE?"
A Reminder to our Delivery Drivers...
If a client on your route isn't home for delivery, please remember to give us a call and let us know. We track client deliveries very carefully and need to know if someone didn't receive their meal. Sometimes this is because they have gone into the hospital. Other times it's because the client has forgotten to tell us about a standing appointment they have. We need to make sure the food isn't going to waste, the client is indeed homebound, and they have the proper meal delivery schedule. Just leave a message for client services and Jeanette will follow up with the client. Thanks!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
We have 362 Active Volunteers who grace our halls year in and year out and on whom we rely. And then we have 285 more individuals coming in to help temporarily. These individuals come to Kitchen Angels for a variety of reasons. Some need to complete community service hours for church, school, or the courts. Others come to us through their place of employment or worship, to build community and camaraderie through service activities. It was just such a group that visited Kitchen Angels on March 11th and helped us with a huge project.
Sagebrush Community Church arrived at 8:00 am on a Saturday, with 25 very capable volunteers. Not only did these folks grab the clipboard of jobs and complete those tasks quickly, but they did so with joy, efficiency, kindness, and care. Volunteers organized items in our warehouse, boxed and labeled them, and then moved the boxes out of our warehouse and into a storage unit outside. All of this was in preparation for our upcoming facility renovation. The group stayed for three hours and did a truly remarkable job that assisted Kitchen Angels in taking our next step to an expanded and improved facility. Many thanks to these visiting volunteer groups that take on special projects to assist Kitchen Angels. Your work really does make a difference.
April 23-29 is
National Volunteer Week, but we decided that one week isn't enough time to celebrate our volunteers. So Kitchen Angels has dubbed April
Volunteer Appreciation Month! Look for tasty food samples at every volunteer shift. We realize that many of our volunteers work hard to create delicious meals, but don't always get to sample their work. We're going to try and serve as many treats as possible - all month long!

35,525 hours of service. Volunteers chopped beets, mashed potatoes, frosted cakes, bagged fruit, dotted meals, sorted bags, scrubbed pots and pans, un-jammed staplers, accepted kitchen item donations, swept and mopped floors, dotted more meals, delivered food in dicey weather, and went to bed at night knowing their efforts helped people in need. Kitchen Angels is the top-notch, volunteer driven organization because of you! Please know that the staff, board of directors, Santa Fe community, and Kitchen Angels clients are tremendously grateful for your hard work. You are saving lives every time you assist with tasks large and small. We're made up of a diverse group of individuals and brought together with our common goal to end hunger in Santa Fe and beyond. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
