Message From the Executive Director of SBCCOG
With so many Earth Day celebrations and events to attend this month, we hope you are inspired to take a personal action step by becoming one of our South Bay Environmental Services Center (SBESC) Volunteers. What better way to stay involved all year long in an environmental effort to make this a more sustainable South Bay.
Volunteers not only have the opportunity to work on current issues which promote energy and water conservation through the SBESC, a program of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments, but also can assist residents and businesses become more sustainable. In addition, our volunteers support conservation efforts in the South Bay community that help our cities meet state goals.
Volunteer activities range from in-office support work to community outreach providing environmental information that can directly influence behavior and choices. Volunteers develop relationships and have one-on-one interactions making this opportunity perfect for those who like working with people and making a difference.

South Bay Communities Get Reliability Boost From Multiyear Infrastructure Investment
"The grid is like a car engine. You can replace parts and be conscientious with maintenance, but at some point, you're going to have to make a wholesale change to that engine."
The engine described by Southern California Edison Region Manager Frank Farwell is the South Bay power grid and the wholesale change is the approximately $100 million SCE is investing per year in those communities starting this year through 2019 to
improve their electric reliability. It is all part of a multiyear effort that began in 2012.

LADWP Achieves 25 Percent Renewable Energy Milestone
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has achieved the state legislated goal of 25 percent of all energy retail sales coming from renewable energy, thanks to the completion of the 250-megawatt (MW) Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project and several other new large-scale solar facilities that began delivering clean power to Los Angeles by the end of 2016.

Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project
The Metro Crenshaw/LAX Line will extend from the existing Metro Exposition Line at Crenshaw and Exposition Boulevards. The Line will travel 8.5 miles to the Metro Green Line and will serve the cities of Los Angeles, Inglewood and El Segundo; and portions of unincorporated Los Angeles County. The new Metro Rail extension will offer an alternative transportation option to congested roadways and provide significant environmental benefits, economic development and employment opportunities throughout Los Angeles County. Riders will be able to make easy connections within the entire Metro Rail system, municipal bus lines and other regional transportation services.

Several years ago, when gas prices were unusually high, Amy Errett felt a pressing need to let her gas-guzzling SUV go. She'd seen other locals driving neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs)-picture a golf cart with aspirations of becoming a sports car-around Manhattan Beach. She decided to embrace the green movement and pick up a more practical, eco-friendly vehicle for neighborhood outings.
