So much is happening in Delaware through the arts. And it’s not just about concerts, recitals, and exhibitions. The arts create a synergy of purpose and resolve ranging from community development initiatives to education reform to health care.
Within the past few months, I have witnessed the power of the arts to bring together diverse community organizations to explore how we can learn about, and from, the experiences of 1968 in Delaware, a watershed year in the Civil Rights movement. I have seen the healing power of the arts working with veterans dealing with the challenges of re-entry, and the struggle that women of color have endured in their striving for freedom and equality.
Initiatives like the
University of Delaware’s Partnership for Arts and Culture bring together members of the arts and non-arts sectors to explore how, working together, communities can be more connected, more engaged, and more vibrant, in another initiative, representatives from the greater Wilmington arts sector are meeting regularly with the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs to explore ways to partner more effectively in achieving the mutual goals of presenting and promoting Wilmington as a cultural destination: a great place to raise a family or locate your business.
The arts not only enhance the quality of our lives, they foster civic engagement, enrich our children’s learning, and foster physical and mental health. The Division of the Arts is proud of the cultural heritage we support in Delaware: the artists, the organizations, the teachers, and the patrons.

Wilmington 1968 is a community-wide reflection 50 years after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Following Dr. King’s death, an emotional public response and demonstrations led to a nine-month occupation of Wilmington, Delaware by the National Guard – the longest occupation of an American city to date. Over the past year, community representatives and organizations convened to discuss history preceding and following the events; responses then and now; and how collective work can improve life for all Wilmingtonians.
Scholars have collected stories, examined historical documents, digitized artifacts, created educational opportunities, and considered how the past has influenced the present. Throughout 2018, we invite the community to learn about local civil rights history, engage in dialogue, and become active participants in shaping Wilmington’s future.

Living in Mythology
will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from now through April 27, 2018.
Inspired by Howard Pyle, Jamie Wyeth, Gustave Klimt, and Brandywine School art, Diver creates work filled with symbolism and metaphors. Her paintings fluctuate between past and present, a pictorial convention of landscapes and abstract color fields.
In this body of work, Diver's mythological narratives are set in romantic landscape of fall and spring - young males, a young girl, and a black pug and cat are her subjects. Her work is a mix of the romance of projecting wishes for a better future to the humor of bad luck. Learn more about Diver with our YouTube
Meet the Artist
video series.

The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the

On-Site Evaluators Needed
|
|
If you love the arts and actively participate in programs or attend events, you may be a candidate to serve as an on-site evaluator for the Division. We are currently seeking to expand our list of potential evaluators who are dependable, articulate observers with knowledge in one or more art forms (you do not need to be professionally trained in the arts).
Evaluators generally attend and produce a written review of two or more programs each year, including performances, exhibits, workshops or classes, and more. Experience new art forms and see more of Delaware’s treasures while serving a vital role in the review of grant-funded programs. If interested, please complete the
On-Site Evaluator Self-Nomination Form and return it to
Katie.West@state.de.us.

The Delaware Division of the Arts, along with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Center for Creative Aging (NCCA), are pleased to announce the launch of the
ENGAGE Initiative Creative Aging Toolkit for State Arts Agencies. Following NCCA’s 3-year ENGAGE Communities of Practice Initiative for State Arts Agencies in Arts, Health, and Aging, this website showcases the exciting creative aging programs happening across Delaware and throughout the country, and provides resources for organizations and individuals seeking to help strengthen the creative aging field.
What is the ENGAGE Initiative?
The ENGAGE Community of Practice Initiative supported state arts agencies (SAAs) in developing infrastructure and programming in arts, health, and aging in their states between 2013 and 2016. Aimed at addressing the growing population of aging adults, this program sought to empower SAAs in helping people creatively flourish across their lifespan. With more than 40 states participating, it resulted in new state partnerships, new state grant initiatives, and new arts learning programs for older adults, expanding the creative aging momentum across the country.
