Renewing Your Waste Disposal Contract?

Important Reminder:  As your municipality contracts or renews its contract with a solid waste facility, CT General Statutes requires the submittal of the solid waste disposal contract to CT DEEP.

Sec. 22a-213 . Approval of solid waste disposal contracts. Contracts between municipalities and solid waste facilities. (a) All contracts made after July 1, 1971, by any city, town, borough or regional authority with any person, another municipality or regional authority to provide for processing, storage or disposal outside of its boundaries of solid wastes generated within its boundaries, shall be reviewed and have the approval of the commissioner as conforming to recognized standards of public health and safety before they can be implemented. The municipality shall be responsible for providing a copy of said solid waste disposal contract to the commissioner.

Contracts will be reviewed by DEEP staff to ensure consistency with CT’s Comprehensive Materials Management Strategy and are subject to approval before they can be implemented. Please submit your municipal solid waste contract (including renewals) before the contract is finalized to Robert Isner, Robert.Isner@ct.gov.
NEW: Waste Food Resources

The Center for EcoTechnology has announced a new webpage, Wasted Food which provides resources to help businesses, municipalities, schools, universities and others with 'wasted food', including a toolbox.

In Connecticut, CET has helped reduce wasted food at a number of K-12 schools and universities by implementing technology solutions, facilitated food donation from supermarkets such as Fresh Market, and launched a composting program at the Sheraton at Bradley Airport.

CET has helped dozens of businesses and institutions in Connecticut learn more about food recovery and wasted food diversion opportunities.

Have businesses in town that generate
a lot of food scraps/food waste?

CET currently has funds to provide "no-cost" assistance to commercial and institutional businesses. Assistance includes an overview of all appropriate solutions for reducing wasted food, and guidance to implement the solutions that make the most sense for the business.

For no-cost help at local businesses or institutions, or for their customers or association members, contact CET at  888-813-8552 or e-mail  wastedfood@cetonline.org.
CLOSED LOOP FUND

The Closed Loop Fund provides project finance that invests in scaling recycling infrastructure and sustainable manufacturing technologies that advance the circular economy.

CLF provides low-cost loans for the private sector and zero percent loans for local governments.

Last year they invested in the City of Waterbury, to implement a curbside cart program to every household.  Waterbury's goal is to increase their 6% recycling rate to 25% over the next three years.

The partnership with DEEP brings $5 million worth of recycling infrastructure investment into Connecticut.

If you're community cannot take advantage, please share this information with your haulers, MRFs, or other private sector partners.  Interested parties should contact Chris Nelson for more information.
