2018 Alumni Awards Nomination Deadline Approaching!

 
We are now accepting nominations for the 2018 Brother J.B. Darcy, CFC Alumnus of the Year Award and the 2018 Magis Award for Young Alumni. 

The St. Bonaventure's College Alumnus of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding graduate whose contributions have notably improved both their profession and community.

The recipient is a well-rounded person who is intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to justice in the generous service to the people of God.
They enrich the lives of others through their leadership, shared knowledge, creativity and innovation and they inspire alumni, students, faculty and staff. You can find the past recipients here.

The Magis Award for Young Alumni honours a young alumnus with a record of extraordinary professional, community or academic achievement.

The recipient is a young adult who has continued to include religion in their lives, is intellectually competent, loving and open to growth. Following the teachings of St. Bonaventure's College these alumni remain committed to justice in the generous service of the people of God. Recipients of the award will be 30 years of age or younger as of the close of nominations for the Awards. You can view past recipients here.

The deadline for applications is

Social Justice Bingo Night
This Saturday, May 5th , at 7pm join us at Mary Queen of Peace Parish Hall for a fun-filled Bingo Night to raise funds for Fr. Greg Boyle's initiatives rehabilitating gang members after a life of violence and incarceration. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Campus Ministry Office at St. Bon's or at the door of the event. Read more about Father Greg, our 2018 Arrupe Lecturer, below.  

Boom or Bust? The Changing Newfoundland Economy: A Panel Discussion
This free  event features three professionals with extensive experience in the Newfoundland economy: Nancy Healey, CEO, St. John's Board of Trade, Carman Mullins, President, ExxonMobil Canada and Rob Blackie, local film and tv producer. Join us and moderator/SBC alum Jeremy Eaton on  Wednesday, May 9th at 7pm in the Aula Maxima at St. Bon's. 2018 Arrupe Lecture with Father Greg Boyle, SJ
We are thrilled to be welcoming Fr. Greg from Los Angeles on Tuesday, May 29th at 7pm Fr. Greg - a world renowned speaker and New York Times Bestselling author -founded and operates Homeboy Industries, the world's largest and most successful gang rehabilitation organization. Sports Day 2018
Mark your calendar for Wednesday, June 6th (rain date June 7th). Alumni are always welcome to attend any part of the fun-filled day. Feel free to join us for the whole day, pop by to have a look for a few minutes, or even to enjoy the hot dog lunch. This year, several alumni races will be scheduled in advance so that you can arrange your schedule to be able to attend one or two events, if you wish. This schedule will go out in the near future and you will be given the opportunity to sign up for track races, egg and spoon races, relays, potato sack races and tug of war. 



2018 St. Bon's Cup
Hit the green on Thursday, June 21st for the 5th Annual St. Bon's Cup. This event funds vital projects such as facilities maintenance and upgrades, curriculum initiatives and more. Not a golfer? What's Happening at SBC?
  • Our various music groups encountered great success at the 2018 Rotary Music Festival. Our choirs and bands all received fantastic marks in their adjudications, with several students winning special awards for their performances. A special congratulations to: Michael C '18, Liza K '21, Wura A '22 and Anna J '19.  
  • Our debate team, comprised of students from Grade 7 through 12, along with Coach Simon Lono, travelled to Halifax this past weekend to compete in the Donahoe Debate Cup. Congratulations to Sarah L '19 and Aaron G '19 who made it to the finals!
The St. Bonaventure's College Primary Choir held the hearts of the audience and adjudicators at their Rotary Performance.

  • Our Grade 8 Girls Basketball Team had a great showing at their final tournament of the school year, walking away with a bronze medal. Thanks to dedicated Coaches Devison and Daly for their hard work this year. 
  • St. Bon's tore up the courts for racquet sports this past month. Our A Tennis Team won the title of Champions in the High School Tennis Cup, with our B team taking the Silver Medal and our C team taking fourth place. This past weekend, several students played in the School Sports NL Badminton Qualifier, with Ashley S '19 and Sarah H '18 taking gold in girls' doubles while Rogan B received silver in boys' singles.

  • Congratulations to Sarah L '19. who is the Newfoundland and Labrador winner of the 2018 Lester B Pearson Scholarship, which will take her to the prestigious Pearson College in British Columbia for her final year of high school. 
  • An inspiration to us all, Malcolm H '18 will speak at the TedX St. John's event, Hope Deconstructed on June 2. Overcoming all odds, Malcolm pushed through barriers and learned to walk again after a devastating skiing accident 3 years ago resulted in a severe spinal chord injury. Tickets can be purchased here.

  • Two Grade 9 students, James C and Jame N, have just returned from Wales, where they represented Newfoundland in an Under 16 tournament.  
  • As a not for profit institution, we rely heavily on the volunteers who give up their time for St. Bon's. We are pleased to honour John Barry, P'03 as the 2018 Volunteer of the year for his years of dedicated service to the school.

  • Hillary S '12 with the Yale Bonus Quartet
    Congratulations to Hillary Simms '12, who is part of Yale Music's Bonus Quartet, a group of trombonists named semi-finalists in the M-Prize Chamber ArtsCompetition at the University of Michigan. Hillary will tour Australia with Yale Music's concert band just as she graduates with her Masters in Music Degree from Yale.  
  • It's commencement season, and we love to hear about what our alumni have accomplished - if you or another alumnus you know has completed a degree or diploma program, please forward the name, St. Bon's graduation year, program and institution name to jwhalen@stbons.ca
