President's Message

Reflecting back to 1987, I was a young surveyor with an LSIT working for an Engineering & Surveying firm in Bakersfield.  The owners, Gene Martin and Roger McIntosh, thought it was important that their employees be involved in the local Chapter of CLSA.  Therefore, they paid for their dues and meals at the meetings.  It was at those meetings that I was able to meet knowledgeable surveyors who were willing to share their insight into the profession.
These were people who worked for both the public and private sectors.  What impressed me most was the comradery and fellowship followed with a deep respect for each other.  The second was their willingness to mentor us "up and comers." Read more...

GPS on Benchmarks Initiative 2018

Dear California Surveying Community,

The CLSA is proud to support the National Geodetic Survey's "2018 - GPS on Benchmarks" program. The program is simply a crowdsourcing call to citizen surveyors to collect GPS observations on NGS NAVD88 benchmarks and share these data with NGS. These collected data will be used to first to create the next hybrid- Geoid 18, then be the basis for the future conversion tool(s) to the upcoming 2022 datum and gravimetric geoid. This effort is an essential component in tying recent GPS observations and solutions to the current national vertical datum - NAVD88.

CLSA recognizes the importance of this program, is tracking progress and actively mobilizing our community. With your help, we can contribute to better heights for years to come. Our goal is to densify the data, hopefully avoid NGS extrapolating geoid data over very large distances uncontrolled. We can git-R-Done!

For more detailed overview see:

CLSA is making every effort to avoid duplication of observations and track our success. Please communicate plans and forward your OPUS solutions to [email protected]

Thank you,
CLSA, GPS on BM committee

NCEES announces search for chief executive officer

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying has begun the search process for a new chief executive officer. Current CEO Jerry Carter will retire on September 30, 2018. The NCEES board of directors has formed a five-member CEO Search Committee, chaired by NCEES President Patrick Tami, P.L.S. The committee will accept applications from qualified candidates until April 30, 2018.

"Under CEO Carter's leadership, NCEES has become one of the most respected organizations in the engineering and surveying professions. He has greatly improved our ability to achieve NCEES' mission by bringing about a significant evolution of the Council's services and governance," Tami says. "Thanks to him, our new CEO will be able to continue our mission with a dedicated staff and strong financial footing."
