VIDEO OF THE MONTH:
"Simon Sinek: Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe"
What makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests it's someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. But creating trust and safety—especially in an uneven economy—means taking on big responsibility.
ARTICLE OF THE MONTH: "What Motivates Us At Work? More Than Money" by Jessica Gross/IDEAS.TED.COM
"When we think about how people work, the naive intuition we have is that people are like rats in a maze," says behavioral economist Dan Ariely (TED Talk: What makes us feel go about our work?) "We really have this incredibly simplistic view of why people work and what the labor market looks like."
Instead, when you look carefully at the way people work, he says, you can find out there's a lot more at play—and at stake—than money. Ariely provides evidence that we are also driven by the meaningfulness of our work, by others' acknowledgement—and by the amount of effort we’ve put in: the harder the task is, the prouder we are.
"When we think about labor, we usually think about motivation and payment as the same thing, but the reality is that we should probably add all kinds of things to it: meaning, creation, challenges, ownership, identity, pride, etc.," Ariely says.
"Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces that Stand in the Way of True Inspiration" by Ed Catmull - BookReviewed by TLP Cohort #5 Member
Creativity Inc. takes readers on a journey of how Pixar came to be and the evolution of a business and the leaders within the company.
It highlights Ed Catmull's interactions with people with different ideas, approaches, agendas and his experiences with project successes and failures. Growing on his interactions and experiences, he infuses the book with introspection and philosophies on how to improve himself, the well being of his staff, the success of the company and the quality of the product.
I would recommend this book.
"Leading By Influence" a T2 Center Supervisor's Signpost
The ability to influence is an essential leadership skill. To influence is to have an impact on the behaviors, attitudes, opinions and choices of others. Influence is not to be confused with power or control. It's not manipulating others to get your way. It's about noticing what motivates employee commitment and using that knowledge to leverage performance and positive results.
A leader's ability to have influence with others is based on trust; in fact, our influence expands in proportion to the amount of trust that exists in a relationship. Let's take a look at how leaders effectively build trust and increase their influence with others.
