Amazing News and Assistance League Events
First of all, I would like to thank our members who volunteered their homes for our Evaluation and Strategic Planning Meetings on March 13. They were:

From the minutes of the meetings, I can see that they were attended by many caring members who contributed thoughtful ideas to guide the Board and Committee Chairmen for the coming year. A summary of the group discussions will be reported at this month's meeting on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, held at Mid Pacific Country Club.
Please be sure to attend and hear what great suggestions the groups envisioned to continue our Assistance League of Hawaii mission.
Our mission is being recognized by the community through monetary and "in-kind" donations. Just this past month, we received three substantial gifts:
A generous monetary donation of $10,000 came in from the
Mary Hanken Revocable Trust
. Mary was a private person living in Hawaii but moved to Des Moines, Iowa later in life. While here, she recognized the needs in the community that Assistance League of Hawaii was able to address. Her gift will allow us to do more for Hawaii's children and families.
The Hawaii Association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) selected Assistance League of Hawaii as their "outreach" organization this year. We accepted their donations at the Convention Center on February 27 during the FCCLA's annual conference. A big mahalo to member Linda Uyehara for recommending FCCLA's donation to us and for the invitation to their conference.
We received a huge shipment of fine items that were shipped from
Dr. Christopher (Kit) Barthel
's residence. He lived in Honoka'a (on the Big Island) and was a key resource person for troubled adolescents who faced abuse and neglect. His son,
Kenneth
, felt he would want to give his treasured items to an organization that helps children. His philosophy was "the more love you give away, the more love you have" and he seemed to have an abundance.
Lastly, Assistance League of Hawaii would not exist without all of you. By choosing to work for the Assistance League O'hana, you have proven that your time and talents are priceless. You are all simply
amazing!!!!

The Conference is Coming:
Early Bird Registration Opens This Month
The Assistance League Board of Directors unanimously approved a motion to pay the Early Bird Registration fee for four (4) members to attend the National Assistance League Connect 2019 Conference. This motion now goes to the membership for approval during the April Regular Meeting. If approved, then all members are invited to submit their names to our secretary, Dot Mason, for a lottery that will select the winning members. Hotel, airfare and other conference expenses will be paid by each member.

Regular Meeting Set For April 10th
The Assistance League of Hawaii Regular Meeting on April 10, 2019 will be held at the Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Joy Corbett
is our member host to the club. The meeting will begin promptly at 10.30 AM. Following the meeting, we will have a Deli Buffet for $25.00.
As you are all aware, due to the
Pali Highway
being closed during certain hours, it will be necessary for some of you to make alternate plans for your route to the Mid-Pacific Country Club. Please plan accordingly and allow extra time so that you have time to check-in and get settled before the meeting begins. If you have any questions about the best route to take, please ask.

Sixty Books Donated to Pre-School

This month
Gloria McGhee-Koel
and I delivered over 60 books to the children of Kauahiki Village preschool classrooms.
This was part of the special literacy project for the National Assistance League Action Week. Thanks to all of you that donated books and funds to purchase board books and early readers.
We are very happy to have a new tutor at Lincoln Elementary.

Wrapping Up the School Year With OWL

Operation Wildlife presentations were given to two Oahu schools, Star of the Sea, a school we have gone to for many years, and Pearlridge Elementary for the first time. M
arge Fabre
's granddaughter, Bella attends Pearlridge Elementary and was there on March 25 for the presentation.
A trip to schools on Kauai will be from March 31 to April 2.

The Maui trip will be from April 14 to 17.

You are invited to continue your membership in Assistance League of Hawaii for the 2019-2020 fiscal year by paying your yearly dues of
$70 by May 15.
Voting and Non-voting Members pay the same amount. I will be collecting dues at the April 10 Regular Meeting.

Due to the recent doubling of the metered parking fees along Young Street, we are currently exploring a way to reimburse some of the parking expense for members working at the Thrift Shop on open days. We will keep you posted as this develops.

The Budget Proposal for the New Fiscal Year
The proposed budget for 2019-2020 has been prepared by the Finance Committee. It
will be reviewed and voted upon by the Board of Directors on April 3, 2019. If approved, the budget will be presented to the membership at the April 10, 2019 Regular Meeting and voted upon at the May 8, 2019 Regular Meeting.
The Board of Directors increased the expense for "Prospective Member Activities" from $200.00 to $300.00 to cover buying lunch for the first Regular Meeting attended by a new member. This was a customary and welcoming gesture in the past.
The Board of Directors will present a Motion to the Membership to vote on the plan to cover the Early Bird Registration Fee ($2,200.00) to the 2019 National Conference in Las Vegas for four (4) members, chosen by lottery. As written in the Bylaws, the costs for registration, airfare and lodging are covered for the Chapter Delegate and Alternate to attend the conference.
The Board of Directors will present a Motion to the Membership to vote on the plan to
apply an additional $60,000.00 to the building mortgage during this fiscal year. A rationale will be presented by the Finance Chairman and Treasurer.

Thrift Shop Days and Increased Parking Rates
|

Parking rates have doubled. |
Our three day week - still in its first month - has been very smooth with good sales and very busy days.
Of course we are not happy with the parking meter increase but a solution is being worked on. We do have a problem with quarters, however. You need lots of quarters every day if you do not use your credit card at the parking meters.
All of the shop quarters are needed for the register and extra cash. We cannot give quarters as change for the meters anymore. Please be understanding about this and have a supply of quarters when you arrive or get a roll of quarters at the bank.
We are the recipient of a large donation (50 bins) - from the Island of Hawaii. They arrived March 25. It is the gift of a deceased Doctor of Child Psychology who wanted the donation to go to an organization that benefits children. Our member volunteers quickly went to work sorting out the items.
Thanks to all of you who have been volunteering to work both downstairs and upstairs.

All committee chairs need to send the Secretary a list of their committee members, including who is their vice chairman and who is their scribe/secretary. Also, minutes of all committee meetings need to be sent to the secretary who will download them and treasure them forever. Actually, she will file them. The "forever" part is iffy.

Brush off your walking shoes and start thinking about the
41st Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk
on May 18th. This is the only "walk" where you might gain a few ounces after sampling the tempting and tasty pupu offered by chefs along the way. More information will be announced at the April Regular Meeting.

Our last in-store Operation School Bell® event at Target last month was a success! We are in the process of completing all the orders for t-shirts in our 23 "Title 1" schools.
One of our many thank you notes came from Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School and I thought you might like to read what the principal wrote.
"Thank you for embracing our school and for supporting us for many years. Likewise, we will continue to support your organization by making donations to your Thrift Shop which generates the funds that allow you do do the wonderful work that you do. Please know that the hard work and effort of your members make a difference in the lives that you touch."

March was a busy month for Assistance League of Hawaii meetings. We had a number of Strategic Planning sessions on March 13 held at member residences in Waikiki, Leeward and Hawaii Kai. Our monthly Board of Directors meeting was held, as usual in the Ohana Room above the Thrift Shop.
