Innovation thrives in the Integrated Product Development course

This semester's IPD course featured new tech products for preteens - and also new prizes for students and for faculty!

Congratulations to co-instructors Eric Svaan and Stephanie Tharp, who received a Teaching Innovation Prize for expanding the IPD course through an intensive "Hacking Health" charrette to spark the creative process. Students explored ideas with preteens, parents, and experts in child psychology and development to understand the needs of their target demographic before starting to design their products.

Team "Groovie" won the Murphy Prize, a new annual award of $5000 in scholarship funds established in memory of Michigan alumna Sarah S. Murphy. A panel of industry experts selected the winner based on which team's business plan best met the assigned criteria, brought something new to the field, and had the greatest chance of commercialization. Team Groovie produced a wearable goal setting device that uses avatars to help motivate kids to reach their next milestone.

"Students participate in an intensive multi-week simulation that introduces the basic concepts of how a business works... and allows them to begin honing skills at working on multi-disciplinary teams, in a cross-functional setting, in the face of ambiguity."

Tauber Institute Business Co-Director Damian Beil describes the pedagogical evolution that makes today's Topics in Global Operations course "more hands-on and experiential than ever before."
