Greetings from PCAP!
I'm sure many people are looking forward to consistently warmer weather this spring! In this strange time of social distancing and working remotely,
I hope everyone is doing well, staying healthy and sane. Trying to work while at home with two small children has its challenges, I'm sure many of you are finding this time challenging as well and I hope you are finding opportunities to take care of yourselves and finding connections wherever possible.
Caitlin put together a fantastic week for Prairie's Got the Goods Week in March. There were 493 individuals who tuned in to the live webinars and over 660 people have watched them on YouTube so far. Social distancing is doing great things for our attendance numbers!
The March webinar for the Native Prairie Speaker Series was Medea Curteanu from Environment and Climate Change Canada, discussing prairie butterflies. The April webinar was last week on April 2nd, with Dr. Erin Bayne from the University of Alberta, discussing how to reduce bird collisions. Both presentations, as well as all our past webinars, are on our
YouTube Channel
. The next NPSS webinar will be May 19th, where Jody Daniel, PhD candidate from the University of Waterloo will be discussing grassland songbirds! A personal favourite topic!
And finally, we would like to thank the generous support from our sponsors: Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association, SaskPower, SaskEnergy, SaskWater, EcoFriendly Sask, Wildlife Habitat Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada, as well as the continuous support of all the PCAP's
Partners
.
I hope you all can find a way to have a great Easter long weekend! Have a wonderful month everyone! Stay safe and healthy!

PCAP Partner Spotlight...
SaskOutdoors (Saskatchewan Outdoor and Environmental Education Association)
Submitted by Rachel Mackenzie, SaskOutdoors
SaskOutdoors, the Saskatchewan Outdoor and Environmental Education Association, has been connecting the people of Saskatchewan with the outdoors for over 50 years. We provide programs and services to support the development of outdoor recreation and stewardship skills for both enthusiasts and educators. The vision for our programming is a Saskatchewan where people play, learn, and live in harmony with their natural surroundings.
In order to identify and protect native species and the natural spaces around us, a person must be given the opportunity to learn and develop an appreciation for the natural world and responsible ecological practices. To support such learning, SaskOutdoors partners to facilitate professional development workshops (Project WILD, Project WET, Growing Up WILD, Flying WILD, Below Zero) for outdoor and environmental educators throughout Saskatchewan. These professional development workshops provide lesson plans that introduce young Canadians to ecological principles, management and conservation, appreciation of the natural world, and responsible human action. In 2019, over 236 certified educators across the province took part in these workshops. We are pleased to deliver this unique programming in Saskatchewan to inspire knowledge, appreciation, and stewardship of our varied and beautiful province.
Each year, SaskOutdoors offers several "Learn To..." events that teach new outdoor-related skills to future enthusiasts. In 2019, over 100 participants learned to paddle, cross country ski, kiteski, play safely in winter, and carve diamond willow through these events. The "Learn To..." programming also includes two certification courses: a Wilderness First Aid course and the annual Learn To Paddle course offering Paddle Canada certification in tandem and solo canoeing. For people who want facilitated group activities to help them get outdoors, SaskOutdoors also offers "Go Do..." events such as a Nature Retreat, Winter Playday, and the annual Winter Camp.
Our publications include
Of Land & Living Skies,
an annual community journal that is available for free online, and a monthly digital newsletter. Our monthly newsletter is filled with event listings, national and provincial professional development opportunities, and unique funding and equipment offers for SaskOutdoors members. To read and receive these publications, please visit our website, www.saskoutdoors.org.
Alongside all of you, SaskOutdoors is uncertain how the Covid-19 pandemic will impact our services through the Spring and Summer of 2020. We are currently working to rearrange our annual public courses and program offerings and will have more information soon. As an organization, we are committed to finding responsible ways to support curiosity, learning, and appreciation of natural spaces during this time of social distancing. For inspiring learning resources and more information about program and schedule changes, please follow SaskOutdoors on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
