Pastor Berg's Blog:
Our Sacramental Life in This Peculiar Time

As a family we have been using video calls to connect and to spend time together. The other evening Hannah and I cooked dinner together. She in Ashland, Oregon and me here in Kenmore, Washington. It was a lot of fun. We chatted and gossiped like we would have if we had been in the same kitchen. She cooked an amazing curry and potato dish while I prepare crockpot pulled pork. It was fun to compare what we were making. Yet, I could not taste her dish, nor she mine. No matter all the connections and fun and kidding and camaraderie, we could not really share a meal together. There was still something missing.

Mark Wilkerson
The church office has been notified that long time member, Mark Wilkerson passed away at the end of March. We will notify the congregation when a memorial service is possible and being planned. Please pray for Mark's family during this difficult time.

Roger Steinke's Notes
Dear Friends and Members of First Lutheran Church,
I hope that you and your loved ones, both near and far, are all healthy and doing well!
It seems that the COVID-19 virus has taken center stage to almost everything else going on in our world. Perhaps you are following the ongoing coverage of this pandemic in our state, our country and around the world. The disruptions and negative impact in our lives is so widespread. It’s hard to wrap my head around all of the far-reaching implications that these weeks (possibly months) of closures and quarantines are going to have on our community, economy, nation and world. For many people, it's an anxious and difficult time.
Amidst all this current anxiety, we as God's people, have the opportunity to be a non-anxious and positive presence to those who we meet. We can share care, encouragement and hope to those who are afraid. We can check in with our neighbors and friends, asking how we can be helpful. We can model kindness and patience.
Important 2020 Summer Dates:

I’m reminded of God’s promise to us in Isaiah: “So do not fear, for I AM with you. Do not be dismayed, for I AM your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”     Isaiah 41:10
As you know, group gatherings for Worship Services, Activities, Events, Education Hour and Sunday School Classes at First Lutheran Church Bothell have all been cancelled for the foreseeable future. In this unusual time, it becomes more difficult to stay connected with the children, youth, adults, families and friends of First Lutheran Church. Please join the leadership and staff of your Church with reaching out to other members.  Perhaps you can make a call, send an email, write a note, send a card and / or post a greeting on social media. There are many ways to let people know that you’re praying for them and thinking of them.

At some point our lives will begin to return to normal. Hopefully Worship Services can resume sometime in May. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I look forward to seeing you sometime soon.
May God continue to grant you and yours good health, strength and happiness!
April 2020
Thank you to the thirty-nine participants who shared their Favorite 2019 photos. The photos submitted were taken in Austria, France, Qatar, Alaska, Oregon, Malawi, Brazil, Washington State Parks, Hawaii, Arizona, San Juan Islands and Norway. Ten photos have been selected for framing and displaying in our library for year 2020.

When we are able worship together, the FLC library welcomes you to view all these wonderful photos of our members’ worldwide adventures. We will be rescheduling both the gallery showing and FLC’s 134th anniversary celebration when we know more.
Check it Out!

These are anxious and trying times for all of us. Social distancing has changed how First Lutheran provides mission and ministry. We are all eager to have worship and all ministries return to normal.
What has not changed are the expenses for mission and ministry. Giving to the General Fund through March 29 was about 80% of our monthly budget requirement. Thank you to all who have continued their faithful giving. If you haven't already, please catch up on what you normally give each Sunday.
Listed below are ways for you to share with First Lutheran.
  • Mail in your checks. We are still doing weekly deposits.
  • Set up electronic giving by using the Give Online button at flc.bothell.orgor calling Vanco services at 800-675-7430.
  • Set up one time or auto payments through your bank’s pay service

Thank you for your faithfulness.

Scrip and Other Passive Fundraising for First Lutheran Church!

Special Scrip announcement during Covid-19 shutdowns!
This is an excellent time to get Shop with Scrip and Presto Pay set up for instant purchase and redemption on your smart phone. This is a super easy way to continue to support FLC's Scrip program which benefits Social Ministries' outreach programs.

Additionally, while worship is being celebrated virtually, you may mail a check to FLC with a note of what scrip cards you wish to purchase, and Gordy Phelps will mail the cards back to you.

We have several opportunities for earning money while you shop for FLC's many social ministry programs:
  1. Buy Scrip or sign up for Shop with Scrip. Many vendors are available for instant purchase and redemption from your mobile phone in the Shop with Scrip program. No more writing checks; the money is automatically deducted from your checking account using Presto Pay. (The profit margin for scrip is not great enough to support credit card payments.) Scrip returns anywhere from 3 - 12% of your purchases to FLC! You can buy grocery cards, movie tickets, Amazon, even Groupon - the list is great!
  2. Sign up for Amazon Smile and name First Lutheran Church as your charity. Every time you shop with Amazon Smile FLC receive .05% of your purchase price. You can still use Amazon Prime. Get your kids to sign up, too!
  3. Link your Fred Meyer rewards card to their Community Rewards program for First Lutheran Church. All of your purchases will result in a quarterly donation to FLC.
  4. Sign up for Bartell's B Caring Program, and name First Lutheran Church as your charity.

2020-2021 College Scholarships
First Lutheran Church members attending a Lutheran college in the fall are encouraged to apply for a FLC Endowment Fund scholarship. Students who qualify should have received an email from Roger Steinke announcing the scholarship program for Fall 2020. If you did not receive an email, please contact Gordy Phelps for an application. Applications are due to the Endowment Committee by the end of April, when they will be reviewed, and scholarships awarded. We appreciate your scholastic efforts.
