There are several Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) contest opportunities for Novice, Junior and Senior 4-Hers to participate in. These include:
- Consumer Decision Making: 4-Hers learn to observe, compare and make fact-based decisions when shopping.
- FCS Skill-a-thon: 4-Hers learn about cooking, baking, nutrition, crafts, clothing, interior design and even health!
- Favorite Food Show: 4-Hers prepare their favorite food and share it with others.
- FCS Bowl: a quiz bowl style contest where 4-Hers test their knowledge of FCS related projects and topics (teams of 4 youth required to compete).
- Fashion Review: 4-Hers construct sewing projects/garments, submit them for evaluation by a judge and model their project/garment for others to view. In-person sewing sessions will be offered at the Extension Office in May (dates to be announced soon)!
Beginning April 21st, the FCS Agent, Kelly, will be offering practice sessions on Wednesday afternoons to assist 4-H’ers with preparing for contests offered this summer. In-person practices will begin at 4:15pm at the Extension Office (public health orders permitting, yellow or higher level). All COVID safe practices will be followed, including face masks. 4-Hers are not required to attend in-person practice sessions to participate in FCS contests and may contact Kelly to receive contest resources and virtual assistance preparing for FCS contests. Please contact Kelly at the Extension Office, 437-0231, for additional information or questions regarding FCS contests.
4-H Sewing/Quilting Project Opportunities

The FCS Agent, Kelly Knight, is available to assist 4-H members of all sewing levels (beginners to advanced) with their sewing and/or quilting projects. Options include tote bags, aprons, garments, nine-patch quilts, to name a few. Kelly is willing to assist 4-H members with their sewing/quilting projects virtually. We have sewing machines available for check out from the Extension Office. 4-Hers are also welcome to use their own machines to complete sewing/quilting projects. We also have basic sets of notions (scissors, seam rippers, measuring tape, etc.) that 4-H members may borrow. Virtual CWF - 2021
National 4-H is offering Citizenship Washington Focus virtually for 2021. Here is information on how the virtual program is set up.
Schedule
Instead of a full week of CWF and having young people online for multiple hours for multiple days in a row, CWF is offering a virtual, five-week, once-a-week program.
Theme
The theme of this year’s CWF is Youth Voice. How can young people use their voice to affect change throughout your community, state, and country? CWF will explore topics such as Civil Discourse, Informed Decision Making, Media Literacy, and ways to assess the needs in your surrounding community to identify the best ways for young people to affect change. CWF will also introduce their enhanced Action Plan process called the Dolphin Tank (like the hit show Shark Tank, but with less bite!) CWF is extremely excited about being able to offer a virtual alternative this year!
Pricing and registration
The price for CWF 2021 is $250. This includes a CWF box from our 4-H Mall/Shop 4-H that is a small goody box that your young people can use throughout the program.
The age range for virtual CWF is 14-19. If you are interested in attending as a delegate, please contact [email protected].

LIVESTOCK EXHIBITOR UPDATES
|
|
Schedule your Packer Appointments TODAY!
If you plan to purchase any market livestock for the coming year, please make appointments for each market animal you anticipate purchasing NOW. Packers are already filling up as far as the end of next year.
This year, all livestock exhibitors will be required to provide confirmation of packer appointments for every market animal that they tag in. These confirmations will need to include the name of the company, date for processing and the number of each species. The Junior Livestock Committee will verify all appointments. Youth who do not make appointments with packers prior to tagging animals in will not be eligible to tag in, and therefore, will not be eligible to show at the Otero County Fair.

Pending University and State Health regulations, we will do our best to offer 4-H Rodeos this summer. Potential dates include:
San Juan County—June 5-6, 2021
Valencia County—July 10-11, 2021

Rodeo Requirements
All 4-H members planning to participate in 2021 NM 4-H Sanctioned Rodeos must complete a 4-H Consent and Assumption of Risk for Participation in Rodeo Activities form (formerly known as the 4-H rodeo waiver). This form must be received in the Otero County Extension Office at least 20 days prior to the 4-H member’s first rodeo. 4-H rodeo participants must also view safety videos provided on the state 4-H website before completing the form. After 4-H rodeo participants have viewed the safety videos and submitted a completed form to the Otero County Extension Office they will receive a 4-H rodeo card for 2020. The form requires a 4-H Leader signature and 4-H Extension Agent signature. Additional information regarding NM 4-H Sanctioned Rodeos may be obtained from the State 4-H website including a schedule of 4-H rodeos, rodeo rule book, entry forms, and more. Contact the Extension Office if you have questions regarding 4-H Rodeos.
Horse Certificates
Horse Certificates need to be done every year or renewed every year with approval of the County Agent. The horse certificate is a form similar to a registration form. You can find it on the 4-H website under “Forms and Publications.” They are due on May 1 to the County Extension Office (not the State 4-H Office).

OTERO 4-H LEADERLINE & COUNTY UPDATES
|
|
Calling All Volunteers!
There are over 200 4-H projects available to our youth, and we are looking for leaders to assist in teaching our 4-Hers. If you're a 4-H Volunteer and looking to share your expertise, or build on expertise in 4-H project areas, please take the time to fill out our survey!
Volunteer Working with Youth During COVID-19 Training
Attending the Volunteer Working with Youth During COVID-19 training is still a mandatory requirement of all volunteers who are interested in working in person with youth. Register at ttps://aces.nmsu.edu/4h/. Once volunteers have completed this training, they are provided with the volunteer plan which includes a “Volunteer Safety Commitment” (similar to the COVID pledge you had to sign as an NMSU employee). Please keep the signed commitment on file. Patti will send out an email following each training with an updated list of volunteers who completed the training from your county. If you do not receive that email, contact Patti, [email protected], and she can resend your list.
As the COVID vaccine rolls out, the question has been asked if proof of receiving the vaccine can be submitted in place of a negative COVID test. The answer is no. NMSU administration is still requiring the negative COVID test even if the volunteer has received the vaccine. As things continue to change (constantly!), we will provide updates.
