Experience from Practicing Restorative Justice for Sexual Harm:
Trauma, Justice Needs, Participant Satisfaction, Equity, Law, and the Future
April 12, 2021 - 2:50PM-4:50PM EST

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
We invite you to an interdisciplinary webinar focusing on sexual misconduct and delivering justice that centers on harm and fosters active accountability. Data shows that the criminal justice system may not meet these needs and expectations. There are alternatives.
Presenters will cover different aspects of sexual misconduct, including the impact of sexual assault, the needs of the person harmed, the design and results of using restorative justice resolution in prosecutor-referred cases of felony and misdemeanor sexual assault, and pertinent legal considerations. This presentation is directly relevant to legislators, the legal community, advocates for both people who were harmed and people who did the harm, professionals in sexual assault coalitions, schools, universities, forensic examiners and other healthcare professionals, and community partners. Less adversarial approaches as a response to sexual misconduct can enhance equity among parties and offer constructive community-based resolution.
This promises to be an important presentation on what justice can look like for the person who was harmed. Q&A immediately following the presentations. Please plan on joining us and bring a friend.

“VOICES, VISIONS, AND UNUSUAL BELIEFS
AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW OF EXTREME STATES”

Tuesday nights, April 13, 2021-May 18, 2021

6:30 PM-8:30 PM

Class takes place virtually on zoom
COURSE IS NOW FREE ON ZOOM!
Course Description

The medical model (approach) to extreme states; so-called “psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder” and other psychiatric labels, has for much too long dominated the mental health landscape. Now we have alternative views and ways to heal. This course is for all mental health professionals including social workers, counselors and peer support specialists. This course is for anyone interested in finding meanings and understanding of distressing experiences and is relevant for folks with lived experience of the mental health system, to their families, relatives and interested others. In each of 6 sessions we will view and discuss videos and talk about a revolutionary report recently out for the general public (you will get a PDF). We will examine your questions and discuss how these alternatives are coming to CT.

Attendees are approved for:

Clinical Strategies During Covid:
The Practice of Social Work with Children, the Elderly, and Communities of Color
April 16, 2021
9:30 to 11:00
via ZOOM

Join us for this valuable and practical virtual training.

Hosted by NASW/CT’s Clinical Network, we welcome three clinicians to discuss strategies and techniques to use with children, older adults, and communities of color during these difficult pandemic times. The webinar will offer overviews across age and culture as each presenter highlights their specific population and will then permit attendees to join a breakout room of their choice for a deeper dive into discussion.

Christine Montgomery, LCSW, Vice President of Community and School Based Services at the Clifford Beers Clinic in New Haven and educator on complex trauma, toxic stress, and promoting trauma informed practice, will explore the impact of COVID 19 on children from birth to 17. Children are experiencing disruption of routine, grief over missing significant life events, loss of safety and security, and upheaval of their schooling. Discussion will explore ways to help ease the pain of these uncertain times, explore ways to reduce long term impact on children’s mental health, and provide conversation starters to use with clients.

Molly Rees Gavin, LCSW is past president of Connecticut Community Care, a statewide nonprofit that identifies choices and provides services to help people of all ages, abilities, and incomes to live at home.  While research has identified the extraordinarily negative impact of isolation on older adults, COVID 19 brought the isolation to another level altogether! The risk of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse has grown while available caretakers has decreased in large numbers while social isolation, elimination of visiting hours, and quarantine expectations have all added to the mix of unprecedented isolation. Discussion will center on consistency of contact, brainstorming solutions with the client and colleagues, networking solutions, and available resources.

Bryan Hall II, LCSW has worked in child welfare, adult probation, and law enforcement and is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Sacred Heart University School of Social Work. He has been instrumental in the development and facilitation of anti-racism curriculum and for incorporating an anti-racist practice lens in human services and law enforcement. Attendees will understand the multiple levels of impact of the pandemic on the daily lives of persons of color on both an individual and community level of color. Specific interventions on the micro and macro levels to provide relief and recovery will be discussed.

Climate Crisis Calls for New Mental Health Model
April 21, 2021
9:30 AM to 11:30 AM
via ZOOM

Climate change is a real and scary crisis. Our global climate emergency is the greatest threat to our health, safety, and wellness but it’s easy to let this serious challenge to our lives take a backseat to the politics, pandemics, mass shootings, and racism that permeate our society. How should we amplify the issue of climate change? What do we really understand about climate change? What toll does it take on us? And, exactly what can we, as individuals, do about it?

This presentation will bring social work to the climate change table, providing information on the biological, ecological, social, and psychological implications of the changes taking place on our planet—from poor air and water qualities, to agriculture failures, to the toll it is taking on our emotional wellbeing. Behavior changes and activism that can make a difference will be discussed. We will also discuss developing individual and collective agency, as well as regenerative ways of being in the world as beneficial responses to the crisis.

Merritt Juliano, JD, LCSW and Elizabeth Allured, PsyD, Co-Presidents of the Climate Psychology Alliance North American will present this webinar. Merritt is the founder of Regenerative Psychotherapy, a private practice in Westport where she specializes in maternal mental health, reflective parenting, stress management, and ecological intelligence. Elizabeth has a clinical practice in New York, teaches at Adelphi and Suffolk Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and has published and presented articles on the environmental crisis from a psychoanalytic perspective.

Coming of Age in America: Challenges and Solutions

April 21, 2021
5 pm to 7 pm
via ZOOM

Presented by Silver Source of Stamford

This presentation creatively explores the far-reaching implications for society of longevity and how to grapple and reframe our thoughts on aging. What does it mean for communities, programs, policies, and how we live and work?  The program starts with a penetrating documentary called “Coming of Age in Aging America”, which examines the exploding population shift, its impact on society, and the need to see the reach and magnitude of the changes an aging America will bring. The hour-long movie examines the current Social Security System; looks at the data being collected on the aging brain and body at the MIT age lab; explores a town re-designing itself for multi-generational use; and observes a large medical system remolding its work environment to retain older workers and recruit younger ones. A panel discussion follows the movie.

The Dynamics of Money: How to Create Financial Health and
Well-being for Yourself and Your Clients…
Now and Through the Challenges of COVID-19

Join Us on Zoom!
Friday, May 21, 2021
9:30am-5:00pm
Investment: $149

Money plays an integral role in our daily lives. To help our clients address money issues, we need to address our own beliefs and behavior with money. This is not about judging ourselves or others…it is about bringing awareness and consciousness to how we relate to money.

This webinar presents money from a broader perspective, providing new techniques to transform self-defeating thinking and behavior patterns, (such as our beliefs, attitudes, self-perceptions and self-imposed images) into positive energy. The options for financial health are expanded when money is understood not simply as negotiable currency, but as a dynamic force in our lives that directly correlates to our positive and negative intentions.

In this webinar, you will learn core skills and practical techniques to help you and your clients understand how to cultivate a new sense of financial health, especially during these uncertain times of COVID-19. As we begin to take control of our money, we begin to take control of our lives. This workshop will help you to create an effective plan of action for renewal, change and growth.
