Reflections of Rockford by RAHS
A look back at local business ... In 1954 Johnny Mutterer just returned from 18 months working in Greenland as a cook at the Army base. The café near the river on the south side of HWY 55 was for sale by Elder Lange. Hubert and Erna Lieder had been managing the café since the early 1940’s, in addition to having the dry goods store on Main Street.
Johnny and Elsie Mutterer, two kids of farm families, decided to purchase the café and changed the name to Rockford Drive-Inn. Together they operated the restaurant for 17 years. Elsie was well known for her homemade pies, which people drove out from Minneapolis to buy. Johnny was head cook, but also the “marketing manager”. He would often be found sitting in a booth with his customer talking about fishing, wrestling, baseball or family.
In the early 1970’s the building was sold and became Jan’s Café for many years, continuing to serve great breakfasts and a great spot to sit and visit. Finally it became Jean’s café known for wonderful blueberry pancakes. In Rockford, this building was home to many kid’s first jobs for six decades.
Note: The café was placed where the parking lot of Hanson Auto is. Thinking it closed in 1999?

A huge thank you to Greenfield residents, David and Stacy Henrich of Bergerson-Caswell, who have donated a water supply well for Greenfield Central Park. The install is planned for some time in April or May. This will be a great asset to our park and is greatly appreciated.
