This month’s Question and Answer:
Bethany Freeland
Co-President of Educate Youth Board

1.  If you could have a meal with anyone, who would it be and what meal?
If I could have a meal with anyone, I would spend an afternoon with my grandfather, who died when I was nine. We would eat carrots out of the garden and talk about carpentry and how he learned to fiddle.

2.  What three things make you smile?
I am filled with joy when I feel the warmth of the sun on my skin, watch the shadows deepen against a blazing sunset, when I read a beautifully written phrase, or overhear someone saying something funny.

3. What do you like about being an artist?
Creativity is a connection to the divine. When I am immersed in art, I lose my sense of time and place, and self. I think a person can find this sort of energized bliss in any art form: music, writing, drawing and painting, dance; but it can come in many other forms as well: designing a room, creating a database, thinking through a problem, even envisioning what kind of life you want to live. We are all artists.

Kierra (Kiki) Owens
Educate Youth Participant since 2018. She attends WiHi.

1.  If you could have a meal with anyone, who would it be and what meal?
I would have a meal with my grandmother on my dad’s side. I never had a chance to sit down and to have a conversation with her. I have a lot of questions for her, “how did you take care of 17 children?” What was your job? We would have a chicken dinner, Kiki’s treat.

2.  What three things make you smile?
Family/friends
Painting
Playing the piano

3. What do you like about being an artist?
I like how I am able to express myself through painting and write encouraging words for people to see. Painting is my time to be creative.
