Dear NCHS Family,
Spring is finally here! We look forward to the warmer weather and longer days to spend more time outdoors. Spring is the season of new beginnings, new growth and change, and a boost of positivity that warmer weather tends to bring.
For students, the arrival of spring brings with it a tendency to lose motivation, daydream, and drift off course–but now is not the time to lose focus. As we transition into the fourth quarter, there are still end-of-year projects, group work, homework, and final exams to tackle. Many students find it challenging to stay motivated during the fourth quarter. Setting expectations and having an academic goal helps keep students motivated when finishing out the school year. Whether that be some kind of weekly educational goal or a goal for a specific class, now is the time to remain focused and positive. Think of the reward that will come from the hard work and accomplishing the goal.
If a student is struggling, please ask them to reach out to their teachers, guidance counselors, or the mental health team for help. Their contact information is on our website. You can also contact me directly, and I would be happy to share their contact information or have staff reach out to you directly.
Be well,
Bill Egan
Principal

March 1st, 2021 Board of Education Meeting
In the Spring of 2020, the high school pivoted to a block schedule, which allows students to have four periods a day versus up to seven in the old schedule. A survey went out to students, parents and teachers in December 2020 to collect some benchmark/baseline data about how the block schedule was working. According to the survey most parents and students feel that the schedule is beneficial for managing homework, helps with academic performance, has a positive effect on extra sleep and feeling well rested, and helps to decrease traffic congestion. Two thirds of staff members feel the block schedule is positive or very positive in terms of completing work-related tasks.
March 15, 2021 Board of Education Meeting
Currently, all NCHS students can attend in-person classes. About 10% of the student population have requested to remain remote. Mitigation strategies will be kept in place, and there is a chance of more quarantines possible due to the increase in the number of students.
The half-day Wednesdays have been important for teachers for professional development. Dr. Luizzi would like to continue the half-days through April and likely beyond.
Dr. Correnty gave an update on the work the district has been doing on the BOE goal on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Many opportunities have been offered to broaden staff and administrative perspectives.
With eight months into the fiscal year, the budget is running similar to prior years. As of the end of February, there is 7.2% of the budget left which relates to accounts that cannot be encumbered such as substitute teachers, stipends, overtime and utilities.
Upcoming BOE meetings: April 12th via Zoom at 7:00 pm
