SHAMROCK LINES
April 2021
Supporting our parishes
From Scotus Central Catholic President, Jeff Ohnoutka

The first days of April will begin the Easter Triduum.

We are fortunate in our area that we get to celebrate Easter in-person in our parishes. I strongly encourage our families to take advantage of all the beautiful services our parishes will provide. We are very fortunate to have pastors and parish staff and volunteers who work so hard to make our experience faith-filled and meaningful.

Just like our teachers and staff in our school, our parishes have made the commitment to create an environment that is safe and welcoming. It's a great time to thank all those people associated with that important mission.

May God continue to bless our school, and everyone associated with it.

Notes from the Theology Department
This week is the most sacred week, the “pinnacle of the liturgical year” in our Catholic Church. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and concludes with Easter Sunday. We remember the last week of the Lord’s life on Earth. The Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday) is actually one liturgy that unfolds the Paschal Mystery.

If you attend these services, you might notice that we start with the sign of the cross at the Holy Thursday Mass, but do not conclude with it. This is because the liturgy continues with the Good Friday service, and is not complete until the end of the Easter Vigil Mass. We invite you to attend the Triduum services offered at our 3 parishes in Columbus with your families, as they are a beautiful way to enter into this sacred time and encounter our Lord.

Holy Thursday: This is a day of remembrance of the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist, and the institution of the priesthood. After Mass, there is a procession of the Eucharist to an “Altar of Repose,” where people will stay to pray, living out Jesus’ request at the Agony in the Garden for someone to keep watch and pray with Him.
Good Friday: This is a day of mandatory fasting and abstinence, as we commemorate Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross. This is the only day of the entire year where no Mass is offered around the world. At the Good Friday service, you’ll notice that the tabernacle is open and empty, reminding us that Jesus is gone. This is not a Mass but a communion service, using the hosts that were consecrated on Holy Thursday. Often attendees will kiss or reverence the cross during the liturgy, as an act of veneration.
Holy Saturday: On Holy Saturday, we remember Christ in the tomb. It is a day of sorrow and fasting as we await Easter. Between his burial and resurrection, Christ descended to the dead, opening the gates of Heaven for the holy men and women who had gone before Him. We can meditate on our separation from Jesus on this day, just like the disciples and Mary experienced after His death, as we prepare to celebrate His Resurrection.
Easter: Once we get to the Vigil or the Sunday morning Easter services, it’s time to celebrate!! All the fasting, mourning, penance, sorrow, and self-denial we experienced during Lent is overcome by the joy and light of Jesus Christ rising from the dead! Take time to soak up the JOY of this reality and celebrate together as a family!

“I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26
