Message from the Chair

Spring has arrived!

Spring has officially arrived and there are now just three months until the end of the school year. With changes to public health orders, there are opportunities to make these next few months eventful.

Graduation event planning is underway. Activities range from community service projects to the graduation ceremony and celebrations. Watch for a new Spring version of the traditional Winter Formal that was delayed under the previous public health limitations. A Book Drive community service project will happen this month. We will hear about all that is planned from the Parent Graduation Committee and from Ms Kwon at the April PAC meeting.

It is time for a good laugh! PAC is launching a Parent Joke Contest. Details are in this newsletter. If you tell a good joke we would love you to participate. Winning entries will be published in future newsletters for everyone to enjoy!

You will soon receive information about this year's Kits PAC Pub Night to be held in May. The Pub Night is a chance to connect with other parents and families as well as raise funds for PAC costs and supporting student clubs.

Last month PAC hosted a presentation from Safer Schools Together. Thank you to Catherine Dinim for the recommendation and Erin Arnold for organizing the event! Safer Schools Together has provided us with links to their library of parent resources, which are available in this newsletter and on the Kits PAC website.

Kits PAC is starting to prepare for next year. Executive positions are elected at the PAC AGM in September. If you are experienced and interested in taking a role on the PAC executive, please check the information on the Kits PAC website or contact me for more information at kitspac@hotmail.com.

Being involved with Kits PAC is a very rewarding experience. If you would like to get involved with the Kits PAC please contact us. We look forward to you joining us at the April meeting and finding your way to get involved!

Can parents be funny?

It's time for the Kitsilano Secondary community to decide with the Kits PAC Parent Joke Contest.

For each round there will be a theme and a panel of judges made up of

parent and teacher representatives.

Will there be prizes? Winners will have bragging rights and be announced at PAC meetings, published in the PAC Newsletter, and listed on the PAC website...and there may be more!

The Rules

One Joke per submission - preferably funny

Must be written and under 2 minutes

No use of the profane vernacular (a.k.a. bad words)

Subject matter must be respectful to all

It can be a team effort in a single submission

This round's theme is:

Dad Jokes

"Puns you usually don't want to hear from someone's parent"

Submission Deadline: Tuesday, April 19, 2022

Include your name, email, grade of your student, and your joke

Book Drive

BOOK DRIVE - Week of April 19 - 22

A graduating grade 12 student is organizing a book drive

to benefit a local non-profit organization.

New and lightly used books for children and adults will be collected at the school. If you have been doing some spring cleaning, this is a great opportunity to donate.

Watch for posters and collection information at Kits High.

Community Events and Resources

National Child & Youth Mental Health Day, May 7th

May 7th is about building caring connections between young people and the caring adults in their lives. We know having caring, connected conversations can have a big impact on the mental health of children and youth.
Family Smart hosts this event. More info. here.

Kitsilano Neighbourhood House

Our Youth Community Cleanup Volunteers meet once a month for 2 hours to help clean up neighbourhoods on the West Side. On average, 7-10 youth take part each month with the goal to support our environment and build leadership skills at the same time. This is a great opportunity to give back to the community and help the environment. Youth can join at any time but registration is essential. The next clean-up is scheduled for April 23rd from 1:30-3:30. More info here.

Drop ins are Friday from 4:30-7:00 pm, except April 15th. Monthly Movie Night will be on April 29th, from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm. This will be a free event and participants will get a special snack pack. In addition, we will also provide pizza for a $5 fee, please pay cash at the door. Subsidies for the cost of pizza are available so please speak with Chris Y at Kits House if you require one. Sign up for the movie night by sending an email to chrisy@kitshouse.org. Let us know if you would like to have the pizza too so we know how much to order. Space is limited.

Foundry

Foundry offers young people ages 12-24 health and wellness resources, services and supports – online and through integrated service centres in communities across BC.
Information available on their website here.
Foundry has an app that gives BC youth and caregivers access to free virtual counselling, peer support and groups. Learn more here.
